In hindsight, I should have known that it wasn’t going to be a good phone call. It didn’t come in the middle of the night, like in some shitty Lifetime movie, where the shrill of the ring hangs in the dark silence a few moments afterward, for dramatic effect. No. The “your mother is dying” phone call came in the middle of a perfect, sunny Saturday afternoon. It was followed up twenty minutes later by the “your mother has died” phone call. I say I should have known that it wasn’t going to be a good call, because it surely wasn’t work calling me in. I quit 2 Saturdays before, when they tried to call me in. And no one else really cares about me enough to bestow me with small talk.
