A Different Digital World - China
Have you ever experience access to certain websites such as Google and Youtube are either blocked or intentionally slowed down during your trip in China? I believe that most of you who have been to China or even never been to the country, knows that many websites and social media platforms are inaccessible in China. The questions are... why? and how? does China restrict their citizens from accessing these website? To have a brief idea, checkout the short video below :
As you can see from the video, China is able to have almost total control over a vast ocean of content through the largest system of censorship in the world, aptly known as the Great Firewall. China’s social media landscape is vast and vibrant but also one of the most strictly controlled on earth.
What is the Great Firewall?
The "Great Firewall" is a colloquial term for mainland China's internet censorship system. It's part of the Golden Shield Project which is also known as the National Public Security Work Informational Project (Comparitech 2018). Both legislative actions and enforcement technologies are used to regulate the country's internet. The Firewall has seen several iterations over the decades and has become far more sophisticated and intricate than one can imagine.
Besides, it is a joint effort between the technology and telecommunications companies and the government compelled to enforce the state’s rules. In 1998 (the year I’m born fyi, haha jk), the Golden Shield Project (a.k.a National Public Security Work Informational Project) was initiated. Several projects were planned under the Golden Shield which includes the all mighty Great Firewall of China. The Golden Shield Project was initially implemented to enhance network security, but soon expanded to include censorship and surveillance. The project enabled maximum control of the Internet by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

How it Works:
All Internet services providers in China are licensed and controlled by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, meaning that every content in and out of China can be monitored and manipulated by the Chinese authorities. The Great Firewall operates using a combination of automated and manual filtering. It employs the cutting edge technology of China's technology giants, standard computer classification techniques and a great deal of manual labour with millions employed on a full or part-time basis.

Personal Opinion:
In my opinion, it is indeed eye-opening to see a whole new system of social media and the internet in China. I believe when the government first applied this strategy there were a lot of negative voice and obstacles in implementing such a huge change in the country. As the world’s population continues to increase rapidly, I believe China’s great firewall will continue to aid in fostering its economy through blocking huge competitors out there. However, there are some ethical issues that should be concerned :
1. People’s personal information and browsing history are constantly monitored by authorities which may violate human rights.
2. China’s way of protecting their political stands and economy could indirectly harm the country’s development as their people are strayed away from the outside world.
3. There might be more protest regarding this firewall in the future as the new generation seek for freedom and privacy.
Lastly, it is interesting to see how social media are being used in different parts of the world such as China, but as long as it is used with a good cause, I believe there should be less restriction being imposed on the way individuals use social media.
