       one thing was for sure, cleotilde was more than excited to get out of the academy & to see a movie. the event as a whole reminded her of the romantic drive in movies that happened in some of her favorite flics. the brunette had always wanted to go to something like this with a date, but of course for this night she was dateless - meaning she had absolutely no one to bug with her pointless questions.  “   excuse me ? do you know if the blankets are going to be directly handed to us or if they’re gonna already be laid out & it’s gonna be like a first come first grab type of thing ?   ”

surprisingly (or unsurprisingly?), jace was a fan of movies and especially the drive-in. it was one of the places he liked to escape to when he needed a break from the academy. so a school trip to a place he often visited specifically to avoid everyone at school was... not ideal. with a ball cap on his head and his hood pulled over it, he tried to look as unapproachable as possible. a school trip did not mean that he had to socialize with everyone, aside from maybe the five or so people jace could tolerate. his plan was going well until a voice piped up beside him. looking out from the corner of his eye, he recognized it was the girl who followed beverly everywhere. what was her name? coco? crystal? it didn’t matter. scoffing at her question, he replied, “directly handed to us? ya, sure. and after that, they’ll bring out the caviar and give everyone foot massages.” shaking his head, he asked, “what do you think this is, princess? the waldorf hotel?”

she was close to being late and she was worried about being late. sure, anastasia wouldn’t mind but she  r e a l l y  didn’t want to keep her waiting. plus, carson usually tried super hard to not be late to anything- in fact, most of the time she was early. her fingers tremored as she glanced at her watch for the third time in the past two minutes. heart clenching, her eyes caught sight of the elevator she was headed towards begin to close and immediately broke into a light jog. it was a good thing too, she just barely managed to stop the doors from fully closing. with a few loose strands having had escaped from her bun, carson waited for the doors to reopen enough. her fingers tapped anxiously against her jean covered thighs for the few seconds it took and then she was darting forward. automatically, her body positioned itself on the opposite side of the elevator from its other occupant before she turned abruptly to face the closing doors. letting out a breath, relieved she made it, she glanced over briefly at the other only to swallow. he didn’t look very happy. “sorry,” she mumbled, looking away immediately. 

the second the girl stepped foot into the elevator, a clear look of annoyance was all over his face. he didn’t even try to hide the fact that he was serving her some major side-eye. the brunette looked familiar, but he couldn’t quite place where he’d seen her before. was she another brier student? by the looks of her demeanor, likely not. unless she was in the support specialty. silently rolling his eyes, he turned his focus to the front, giving the ‘ground floor’ button another push, not bothering to ask her which floor she was headed to. catching the barely audible ‘sorry’, he was suddenly hit with the realization of why he recognized her. “is ‘sorry’ the only word in your vocabulary?” he asked sarcastically, shooting her a side glance.

eyes narrowing further at the mention of being on the same team, she gave him a withering look, her exasperation clearly written on her face. “ only an idiot would believe that means anything to you. ” and as emotionally stunted as she could be, she could at least say she most definitely was not an idiot. aiming at his own chest once she realized he had re-positioned himself, she weighed the pros and cons of shooting him, tempted to get him out of the way so she wouldn’t have to worry about him in the back of her mind. “ but are we the last ones left? ” if lydia was still in the game then beverly’s best option would be to regroup with her, hash out a plan before they take out the remainder of both theo and fletcher’s teams.

jace could feel her annoyance with him just from he stood, a short distance away. he’d be lying if he said he didn’t get a kick out of pushing her buttons. did that make him an awful person? well, he never did claim to be a good person, or even decent at that. “shit, what does that make the person who put me on her team then?” he asked, clearly feigning shock. seeing the brunette mirror his position and aiming her gun at him only widened the shit-eating grin on his face. raising his hands up to surrender, he then brought them down, his gun now lowered by his side. “the two giants are still around with a couple stragglers. last i saw, in the east corner. saw your sister going after a blonde a few minutes ago. not sure who.” his head nodded to their right, indicating where they ran off to. jace might have been a little shit sometimes, but when he did try, he wasn’t half bad. he may not have been trained like the other field ops, but his parents’ training from before he started at brier did pay off sometimes.

lydia glanced down at her oversized t-shirt, accented by ripped jeans and dirty converse and knew he had a point. if she was being honest with herself, she wasn’t entirely sure of the last time she’d washed her curls which were now contained in a knot on the top of her head with tendrils falling around her face. “you may have a point.” she conceded. “but sometimes when you need to work it’s easy to forget everything else, i’m sure you understand that.”

shifting his chair to face her, he looked as though he were deep in thought. pausing for a brief moment, he then began to say, “so tell me, because i’m genuinely curious...” no he wasn’t. “do you enjoy having this conversation right now? is being chastised your idea of a fun time?” the sarcasm was dripping heavily with every word, though he maintained a serious expression on his face.

“you certainly aren’t everyone,” she cooed, reaching out to brush some hair out of his face. “if you were, i wouldn’t be wasting my time with you.” as far as sofia was concerned, everyone else had a sense of contempt for her and it was quite boring the way they all hated her. at least be original. when he turned in her direction, she smiled a bit wider knowing she had his attention. “well…” she shifted her own position, leaning forward towards him and lowering her voice. “we could go back to your room and you could teach me a little more about cyber ops. all your little toys - you know how much i love learning.”

jace was someone who was very particular about keeping his personal space, well, his. there were very few people who were exceptions to this. in fact, all could be counted on one hand. a friend with certain benefits surely made that list, hence why he didn’t immediately swat the blonde’s hand away. “let me guess... you’re a believer that flattery will get you everywhere?” he asked, resting his hand under his chin. though he had a feeling he knew where she was going with this, he asked anyways, his tone matching hers, “and what exactly do i get in return for teaching you? you’re not the only one with valuable time.”

relief washed over her when jace stepped from the shadows. with jace it was awkwardness that she feared. she would at least feel safe if she allowed herself to walk back to the campus with him. her heart pounded in her chest, the sound nearly deafening her. it was a mix of residual fear from thinking someone was following her & jace’s mere presence. she would usually make a point to duck out of a room the moment he entered, but in moments like this, escaping him was not an option. she pulled the sleeves of her jumper down over her hands, shifting uncomfortably between her feet. “ do you… do you want to walk with me ? ” her gaze briefly met his, her bottom lip becoming trapped between her teeth, a clear indicator of her nerves. 

the air between them had changed since breaking up, though that shouldn’t be a surprise. it was expected, given what had happened that led to the breakup, but that didn’t make it any easier to get used to. he found it difficult to shrug off this feeling, like he so often and so easily shrugged off everything and almost everyone else. very few people could make jace feel like this. care. he actually cared that things had changed between them. but did he care enough to do something about it? was it worth the effort to try and fix? was she worth the effort? the answer was obvious, but thinking it and actually acting on it were two different things. his eyes observed her nervous habits quietly, as he considered her offer. was she just asking to be polite? it wasn’t a matter of whether he wanted to or not, of course he did, but whether he should. “do you... want me to?” he asked instead.

after a long day at the library, digging up some info on an outdated form of encryption for his own personal project, he was being kicked out by the librarian. the only public library in winchester and they couldn’t even keep it open 24/7? it was bloody ridiculous. stepping inside the elevator, he pushed the button for the ground floor, then waited for the doors to close. not a second later, he heard someone quickly approaching. any decent human being would have held the doors open and waited, but not jace. instead, he pushed the ‘door close’ button about a couple dozen times. and just when the metal doors began shutting, he saw a hand slip through, prompting the doors to open again. bloody fucking hell.

“yes,” she said with smirk. “everyone should be impressed by me.” sofia admitted. it wasn’t something she talked about much but she loved it when people praised her or said she’d done something they hadn’t expected from her, she’d grown up with people underestimating her and making fun of her for being a dumb blonde. sometimes she overdid it proving them wrong. “i do know a lot,” she agreed. “but the best scholars can admit when they can learn more. i still think i know more than most people here but in some areas you might be able to help,” she offered suggestively, her hand reaching out surreptitiously to run of over his arm, her eyes raising to meet his with a coy look in her eye.

mirroring her smirk, he replied, “maybe. but i guess i’m not everyone.” though that was a partial lie. he knew the girl was smart, that much was undeniable. but at what point do smarts outweigh an ego the size of texas? who knows? but even he had to admit that self confidence was an attractive trait. and of course, she was obviously very attractive outwardly as well. hence, whatever little thing they’ve had going on between them. humming in response, he paused for a moment, his dark eyes following her hand as it ran down his arm. shifting his body to face her better, he feigned obliviousness to her suggestion. “ya? like what?”

her mouth dropped open in faux offense as she played into it. she knew he was maybe trying to make her feel badly saying she looked worse than shit and calling her shrillex - which actually was pretty clever - but none of it mattered to her. he was just another guy she went to school with who wasn’t even in her field. so basically…his opinion didn’t matter. she didn’t even mean it in a bad way it was just surface level. “thank you, thank you. i try so hard to look as worse as possible.”

he was aware that the girl likely appeared worn down because she’d been up all night working on some brilliant new project. anyone who knew lydia could attest to that. really, a good chunk of the students at brier shared the same night owl habit, even himself. so maybe he should cut her some slack and ease up on the harsh comments. “clearly. just ‘cause you work in a barn doesn’t mean you gotta look like you belong in a barn.” then again, he wasn’t the one who interrupted someone’s sleep.

eyes narrowed as she saw jace a short distance away from her, unsure about what his next move would be. while he had only been joking when he had said he wouldn’t hesitate to shoot her, she didn’t put it past him to do so just to mess with her. “ i see you’re still alive and kicking. ” she muttered, pointing out the obvious as she side-eyed him. creeping closer, she put her back against the wall, eyes only darting away from him momentarily before landing back on the gun in his hand. “ have you seen anyone else? ”

hiding in the shadows casted by a divider, his eyes scanned the room, looking for any signs of movement. gun in hand, he was in position to fire at any given moment. hearing sound coming from his right, he quickly turned, only to see that it was just beverly. chuckling quietly at her observation, he whispered back, “you sound disappointed. c’mon bev, we’re on the same team here.” as if he hadn’t “joked” about shooting his own teammates not ten minutes ago. “nope, no one else around. just you. and me,” he replied with a smirk, repositioning his aim to point towards her chest.
