Jack noticed that Sam's voice was rather hoarse. He wondered how much sleep Sam had been able to get, since the accident, how many drugs he had been given. His second question was answered, or at least addressed, as Sam motioned to the morphine drip next to him. Jack gave Sam a bit of a smile at that gesture, though the expression was still strained. At least it seemed as though Sam had kept his sense of humor. That had to mean that he wasn't doing too bad. Even if he looked rather beat up and tired, he was awake and joking around. He was alive.
A pang of sorrow moved through Jack's heart, and he had to take a deep breath to continue normally. It was so hard, right now, to keep going on with his life and act as though everything was normal. In a way, there wasn't really anything different about Jack's life. It was almost as though Luke was still just deployed. He could still be away, at the base in Tacoma even. Jack would still be working in the shop, if he was alive, still visiting Sam, even, in the hospital. Of course, he wouldn't have this bad news hanging over his head, making him feel dizzy and weak every other moment. That was probably the worst part, was that it was so easy for Jack to forget, for a just a moment, because his life was still moving on in the same way. He would be carefree for a second, smile even, before he would remember again, and the sorrow would come rushing in, filling Jack with a heavy feeling.
He didn't want to just break the news to Sam, though. Jack wasn't sure how close Sam and Luke had been, hadn't known them to be friends, but Sam still deserved to hear the news, so that when, or if, he was to return to the garage, he would understand why everyone was acting so differently. Also, Jack much preferred to break the news himself, than have Sam hear it from someone else, like Spencer. Jack knew that Spencer hated Luke, and he didn't want the news to be twisted through him.
"Ah, well I just wanted to visit, see how you were doing." Jack said, lying a bit. "I also wanted to talk to you about a few things, like Andy, and uh, Luke." Jack said. He knew he had to address the fight that Sam and Andy had gotten into. He had already talked to Andy, and he doubted that Andy would be very provoking now, after Luke's death. He wanted to check-in with Sam, still, though, and make sure that he understood what Jack expected from him in the future.
