Mags visibly faltered, taking his question into consideration while the nurse waited for them with the door propped open. Did she want him back there for the ultrasound which would ultimately make things painfully real? She took a deep breath and nodded her head. “Um-…yeah. I really do.” Mags could chalk it up to fear, and not wanting to be back there by herself. She turned to face the nurse and gave her a small smile in apology at having to wait on the two of them.

Her heart was beating uncontrollably fast as she followed her, coming to a stop at a scale. Mags stepped onto the small scale and held her breath as she watched the digital numbers settle. “One sixteen. Wow, you’re tiny.” The nurse commented as she made a note in Mag’s chart. The woman suppressed an eye roll as she proceeded to follow her into an exam room. “Just have a seat on the table and the doctor will be right in.” The nurse exited the room and Mags stood there for a moment before sighing. “Tiny? I feel like this baby already weighs ten pounds.” She muttered as she hopped onto the table. The blonde was silent for a few minutes before opening her mouth. “I know I didn’t act like it but…I really am grateful that you came up here. I was kind of scared..” She trailed off, uncomfortable at how vulnerable she was allowing herself to be with Jack.

Jack did his best to just stay out of the way, not saying anything as the nurse weighed and took some notes on Mags chart. He followed them into the exam room and took a seat by the wall, barely listening as Mags complained about the weight of the baby. He looked up as she spoke about being scared though, brought out of his own thoughts. He stood and walked over to stand beside her where she was sitting on the exam table, taking her hand in his.

“I’ll support you in whatever you decide to do. This is as much my fault as yours. We were fucking careless.” He shrugged. He almost thanked her for not telling Bella about the baby and the fact that it was his but he doubted that would go over real big right now. “You’re gonna be fine though, Mags. You’ll get through all of it.” He assured her.

Mags knew that sitting beside her in that doctors office was no easy task for Jack. That much was blatantly obvious with his fidgeting and the way his eyes were flitting around the room like he was paranoid. Mags felt the same sense of paranoia. It was a few moments before Jack spoke, in which Mags checked off the corresponding boxes under the paternal part of the documents. She could see the questioning on his face and shrugged her shoulders. “They just need to know these things so that they can take extra precaution to check the baby for early onset signs and symptoms of these. Heart disease is hereditary and they need to know stuff like this.” Mags looked down to finish the paperwork, signing her consent on all of the sheets. “I’ll be right back.”

She made her way to the receptionists desk, handing her the paperwork with a smile. As she turned to walk back to her seat, she noticed Jack shooting a woman across the room a look. With a deep sigh, Mags sat down next to Jack and placed a soft hand on his knee. “Hey. Can you calm the fuck down? I’m already anxious and you aren’t helping. Besides, I don’t need you starting a fight or something in the waiting room.” Mags leaned back in her chair, letting her eyes close. It was only minutes before she heard a door open and her name being called out throughout the waiting room. “Margaret Wilson?” Mags raised her hand and stood from the chair, looking back to see if Jack was following.

Jack nodded, watching Mags walk up to the front desk before turning his attention back to the stink-faced mom. He barely noticed when Mags sat back down beside him, only pulled back to the present when she laid her hand on his knee. He looked over at her with a frown, the glare just transferring to her instead.

“I’m calm. I’m fucking calm.” He insisted with a growl in his tone that said otherwise. He looked up as the nurse called Mags full name. He stood as Mags did, turning to her with an awkwardness that was unusual for him.

“Do you want me to come back with you?” He asked, honestly unsure what the odds of him still being there would be if she left him alone in the waiting room. He had thought this would be easy- inconvenient, but easy. But all of this was making this whole situation seem a lot more real than it had before.

Mags took a moment to really look at Jack’s face, realizing that he actually meant the words that had come out of his mouth. “Well…even if I’m not showing…I still feel like a cow. But…thank you.” Mags gave him a sincere smile, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. After a few moments, Mags cleared her throat and looked down at the clipboard in her lap. “Baby’s father’s name….Jack Trower…” Mags trailed off as she scribbled his name on the line.

“Is there a history of any major diseases in your family? Diabetes? Hypertension? Heart disease? Cancer?” Mags looked at Jack as her pen was poised above the paper, ready to check any box that applied to his family medical history. “I swear, these questions are so in depth. Apparently, blood diseases count as well.”

Jack looked back down at the clipboard as she started filling it out again. He cringed as she got to the part where his name would go, loathing the sight of his name being written on the form. It felt weirdly official to see that on paper and he felt a wave of panic, biting back the urge to remind her that it wasn’t too late to terminate the pregnancy. He knew that it would just make her mad and even less inclined to consider such a thing.

He snapped out of his thoughts as he realized she was waiting on him. He shook his head, leaning back in his chair.

“My dad had heart disease. My great aunt had breast cancer but she was really old...” He didn’t understand how any of this could possibly apply to the baby. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, resisting the urge to try and leave before the doctor called her back. That same mother was still glaring at them from across the waiting room and Jack took to glaring back at her, wanting to demand why she thought she had the right to judge him or Mags.

Mags felt sick to her stomach. Not the morning sickness that usually accompanied the first trimester of pregnancy, but the gut wrenching feeling that she was pregnant with her best friend’s husbands child. She was only two months along, and thankfully not showing. Mags could only pray that she would stay that way and only begin to show right before her due date. But that was wishful thinking.

She took a shaky deep breath as she exited her car and walked through the dim parking garage to the elevators. A quick trip down and she was stepping into the hallway where he doctors office was located. As she stepped into the waiting room, she made a quick scan around, noting that Jack wasn’t there. After checking in and grabbing a clipboard to fill out her personal information, Mags took a seat near the door and began to fill out the paperwork. It wasn’t too long before the chime of the door opening, and her head popped up to see Jack walking in.

Her eyes immediately narrowed into tiny slits. She really had no reason to be angry with Jack, but for reason the mere sight of him made her stomach hurt even more. “Hmm, let’s see. I currently have the spawn of satan growing inside of my uterus and I feel like a beached whale. Are you doing okay?” She smiled sweetly and turned towards him.

Jack couldn’t help the smile that formed at her words, grateful that pregnancy hadn’t made her any easier to get along with. Her being angry and mean to him was so much easier to handle than any other emotions he could imagine her throwing his way.

“You don’t even look any different yet.” He assured her, actually being honest about that much. “Sorry about the satan spawn though.” He caught a young mother sitting across from them glaring in their direction, guessing she must’ve overheard their conversation. Not everyone got his and Mags sense of humor he guessed.

Jack parked outside the building, killing the engine but not moving to get out of the vehicle. He took a deep breath, having a hard time convincing himself to get out of the car to go inside. He knew he had to, though he was telling himself that it was in his own best interest to keep Mags happy and quiet. If word of all this got back to Isabella he’d be screwed.

He took his keys out of the ignition and got out of the car, his hands in his pockets as he walked towards the entrance of the building. He stepped inside, catching sight of Mags sitting in the waiting room. He walked over to her and took the seat next to her, his gaze focused on the clipboard in her lap.

“Hey,” He said after a moment, looking over at her. “You doing okay?” he asked.
