No. She’s not. Chill out and stop making her news.
“An entitled woman? Let’s get her!” This week, Jackie and James discuss the Internet backlash to the 25 Year Old Ranting Millennial who wrote an open letter to her CEO, Samantha Bee’s amazing new late-night talk show, and Rebecca Traister’s essay “The Single American Woman” Why is our listenership 85% female? #UnsolvedMysteries
I shout out the incomparable Jazmine Sullivan in episode 29 of the podcast. Jazmine and I were students together at the High School for Creative & Performing Arts in Philadelphia. She was fierce as hell back then and I’m so glad SHE’S BACK! We played the song “Stupid Girl” from her 2015 album Reality Show. Check out this amazing acoustic version shot in New Orleans.
Check out the newest episode. We ask “Do I Sound Gay?” in response to David Thorpe’s excellent documentary and try to wade through the radioactive waters of Kanye West and Taylor Swift’s never-ending feud.
I have to keep my gay-ness above 50 mph OR THIS BUS WILL EXPLODE!
The hard thing about feminism is that it applies to all women
Show Notes for Episode 28 of “It’s Been a Week”
News from the newsfeed - The things our friends and the internet won’t shut up about
Feminist Gloria Steinem says young women just support Bernie because they want attention from boys during an interview with Bill Maher. Feminist rage ensues.
Beyoncé dropped a new single with an epic music video and referenced the Black Panthers in her slaying super bowl performance.
You can watch the full Super Bowl performance here. Skip to 5:37 for Bruno Mars or go straight to 7:04 for Beyoncé. Sorry, Chris.
Sofia Vergara pissed people off with her recent cover story in The Edit Magazine which spawned the clickbait Huffpost article “Sofia Vergara Doesn’t Get Why Objectification Is Offensive”
In response to critics who find some of her comedy to be degrading towards women, Vergara explains she is secure enough to “not take it all that seriously.” Is this just another version of the argument that Melissa McCarthy shouldn’t play characters who are mocked for being fat? Just as I feel that McCarthy is intelligent enough to choose her owns roles, I have to concede that Sofia Vergara has the right to do the same thing. I may not always like it, but I do accept that these women deserve their right to decide how they present their body. If Sofia Vergara feels that she is in on the joke, than I have to accept that I don’t need to protect her or tell her how to feel about her work. With that said, I am allowed to determine how that work makes me feel and I (and other women) have the right to talk about it. At the end of the day, I would settle with Sofia Vergara continuing to get work that she finds satisfying and people find funny, as long as we can also hire other women who can do anything fucking else other than that.
Watch the full Sofia Vergara pedestal bit from the 2014 Emmy’s that upset everyone here.
Chelsea Handler’s new Netflix Documentary Series “Chelsea Does”
Is Chelsea Handler likable? Who fucking cares? This show is smart and funny and often problematic. Even at her worst, Handler is shedding light on interesting topics worthy of further discussion. She comes off like an ignorant idiot in her Racism episode, but even then - it’s interesting! The marriage episode is killer. If you’ve gone through the ordeal of a wedding it’s a must watch.
Hillary Speaking Fees
People who are giving her shit for getting paid to work at a professional level equal to her male peers need to go fuck themselves immediately. I get that you find the over-payment of the ruling class to be fundamentally repugnant, but you seemed to find the strength to swallow that indignation when it came to every wealthy guy who did it all the time - for all time - up until now. We can’t demand equal pay for all women and then vilify the first woman who actually meets the preordained characteristics of the male paradigm for president. What, now we’re sick of it? She is the step too far?
In Conclusion:
I want Hillary to be allowed to be a consummate moderate politician.
I want Chelsea Handler to be allowed to be an acerbic white privileged bitch.
I want Beyonce to be allowed to be as wealthy as Bill Gates.
And I want Sofia Vergara to be a working Latina actor who works her ass off to be hot and gets paid for it.
Why? Because I asked for successful women, and just like countless classes of successful white-men before them, they are hardened and opinionated and these women have the power to make their own decisions. I’m not always going to like them, but I damn-well accept the fact that I want them to exist, and I want them to keep doors open for the next league of difficult, wonderful women.
Jackie wouldn't stop dropping mics this episode! SO MUCH BROKEN SOUND EQUIPMENT!
Thanks, Gloria. You always make things better.
I’m gonna be honest, this is a women’s studies ordeal of an episode. We talk about Gloria Steinem, Hillary Clinton, Sofia Vergara, Chelsea Handler, Gillian Anderson and BEYONCE. So many women made so many people angry and uncomfortable this week and we loved every minute of it!
Jessica Williams breaks down Beyonce's politically charged performance about the black experience.
Beyonce is black.
Lousy Connection by Ezra Furman, from Perpetual Motion People. Released 2015 on Bella Union. iTunes: http://hyperurl.co/PMPDL CD: http://hyperurl.co/PMPCD LP...
I have a secret you guys: I’ve been Ezra Furman this whole time. It’s a lot like Fight Club, but somehow less gay.
Huge renewal! That means we’re getting seven seasons total!
That means we get more Poussey :) -Mabinty
I can’t wait until this South Park episode we’re calling an election reaches its hilarious conclusion. #YOUREaturdsandwich #imwithdouche #feeltheturd
Since it’s coming up to Valentine’s Day, I decided to make some Carol-themed Valentines cards.
Everyone is getting a Carol-themed Valentine’s Day card this year.
