Sometimes it can be really, really fun and interesting if a character does evil things and there wasn't actually some super secret morally good reason for them to have done it or some awful experience in their past that makes their actions in response actually narratively fine in order to be deserving of redemption.

Sometimes the redemption is earned from acknowledging that they were fully in the wrong and awful in ways that are inexcusable and them still choosing to move forward doing the right thing regardless of the promise of ever being forgiven for the wrong they knowingly committed. Sometimes doing it while fully believing that forgiveness will never come and never asking for it is the true strength behind being a better person.

Sometimes allowing a character to have been a monster instead of insisting that they were always making choices from a place of good is more compelling. Sometimes there needs to be something to actually be redeemed for.

After joining the rebellion, Kallus’ life changed for the better. On Yavin, he found a cause truly worth fighting for, people he cared about, and a position inside Intelligence where his skills were put to good use. Things were good. He had no desire to change any of it.

Only, it seemed that change had simply been waiting for him.

Strange things began to happen around Kallus. Things that didn’t make sense. Things that shouldn’t be possible. But as there were more important things to focus on, he rationalized it all away and pushed it out of his mind. This held true until the moment he watched Zeb about to die at the hands of the Empire, prompting Kallus to somehow do the impossible - and without meaning to, taking his first stumbling steps down a path he never would have believed was meant for a man like him.

on my rewatching rebels for no reason shit (yet again) and in wings of the master s2.e7 hera says that somehow when things are at their worst she feels at her best and its so subtle i dont want to say it was an intentional foreshadow to kanans death but it hurts either way
