He blushed and she blushed. It was just a chain reaction. At least that was what she was going with. “John Jackson…..That does sound pretty official. And that sucks. Or is that a good thing? I wouldn’t know.I don’t have any siblings. I used to want some so I ahd some minions of my own, but now I don’t really know.”

Jack-Jack tugged on his ear without thinking, something he had done for forever when he felt a little awkward. “Yeah, so Jack-Jack’s the best for me, I guess. And it...depends on how they wanna be. We get along okay most of the time but my brother is...Dash and my sister is dramatic. I think it’s different if you’re the oldest, though.” He had definitely turned out very different than Violet.

“Wait…are ya teasing me?” Penelope’s jaw dropped a little. “What is Jack-Jack short for? What kind of name do you have?” She realized that probably sounded harsh and she blushed a bit. “I just think names are interesting. And I like the origins and such. I just wanna know the story behind Jack-Jack.”

He felt himself blush. Yeah, it was always...weird to explain, to say the least. “Well, my first name is John and my middle name is Jackson. Some people called John get called Jack, so...you know, Jack-Jack.” Not like his parents would actually put something like Jack-Jack on a birth certificate. He’d have to just switch to Jack or JJ when he got older so he didn’t sound like a baby. “Plus I’m the youngest of three, so I get the littlest kid nickname.”

“Oh, cool,” Norman grinned absently, lines of tension around his mouth as he flinched and dodged with his body in a direction he couldn’t dodge in the game, getting way too into it perhaps, but the point of games had always been escapism, hadn’t it? “That sounds really cool actually. I just played a bunch of Nintendogs because my dad wouldn’t let me get a puppy, but maybe puzzle solving games would have stopped me from losing my stuff every day. I’m on my fifth student ID this year.”

Jack-Jack nodded, and jumped a bit when the guy dodged the game. Wow, okay, he was super into this. Good to know. Hopefully Jack-Jack wouldn’t get hit. “Yeah it’s not bad. And good to know I’m not the only guy I know who played Nintendogs.” The last time he’d brought it up, he’d been teased because it was a girl’s game, but he must have just brought it up around not nice people. “See, I always got puzzle games because I knew my brother wouldn’t try to take them for his DS so.”

“I always have my prescription on me, young one.” She blew a puff of smoke at his face before grinning cheekily. “Don’t even worry about it. I’m not worried about it. But I can move if you wanna smoke somewhere else? Or wait…sorry. You just said no thank you. That’s polite of you. It’s chill.”

Jack-Jack nodded, and then coughed. He didn’t get why people smoked. That stuff smelled. Well, he wasn’t sure of what to do now. He sort of wanted to walk away, but then, what if the patrol came around and didn’t believe her? He knew the cops in the area, so maybe he could stick around long enough until the patrol passed? “Yeah, no, I’m...I’m all set.” God, he sounded so awkward.

Norman frowned. “Um, I think they ended up releasing a DS game eventually at least. I’ve never played it, but yeah, it’s on some other platforms. I don’t know if there’s anything in the app store but there definitely should be, these are like as classic as it gets.” He might not know much of anything about arcades in general, but he stayed up to date in terms of the undead and was fairly proud of it. He knew of most of the games the guy mentioned fairly well, but he frowned at the mention of the latter. “Trace Memory?” he asked, thanking god silently for the automatic reload being added to this game, even though he ended up shaking the damn thing anyway. “What’s that, like a mind training kind of thing?” Norman had always been interested in those sorts of games and methods, even if it was for his own ulterior motives. It seemed like having a better handle on his own brain could only help in the long run.

Jack-Jack nodded, and filed that away. DS game was perfect, and he would have to find it, even if it meant resorting to asking Auntie Edna to help. If he needed any game, it would be this. It would give him a bit of a push toward having any video game that wasn’t just casual or puzzles. “Uh, it was a sort of detective game. Girl on an island, has to find her dad in this big mansion. Lots of puzzle solving and stuff. And a ghost.” It sounded very weird when he described it, but he really liked it.

Doing his best to fix his appearance, Henry stood tall and as proudly as he could given the circumstances. Removing a few of the debris from his hair, he gave the stranger a quick nod. “Yes. Well, it’s not my dog, but it belongs to my mother – who I love so very much, I might add. I’d never actually want anything bad to happen to her dog. I’m…just not very good with animals like she or my brothers are.”

Jack-Jack stuck his hands in his pockets, rocking on his feet a bit as the man explained. “Right. Well, I can help you find the dog...if you want. I’m usually okay with them. Did you at least try whistling instead of just yelling?” He wasn’t sure why he’d said that, since the guy probably had, but. Cover all the bases.

She laughed. Oh she knew it had to be martial arts. “You sound like an anti-bullying poster. That’s adorable, so you can keep doing it.” When he introduced herself she scrunched her nose. “Jack-Jack? I’ve never heard that one before somehow. Do people call you JJ a lot? Jacky Squared? Jack Attack?”

He made a bit of a face at being called adorable. That wasn’t his favorite word, but he’d take it. “I’m just not scared of bullies,” he shrugged. “Well, Jack-Jack’s a nickname, too, but yeah, I get JJ a lot.” He figured it was the easiest out of all of them. His name was a mouthful.

“Really? Is it because you know how to kick ass?” She figured he had some karate belt or something. There weren’t just people who were…unbothered. Right? “Oh buddy. I promise you are going to regret saying that. And if you don’t…well…..cool. I’m Penelope.”

Jack-Jack paused. “Well, I take martial arts but that’s not the reason. Martial arts isn’t so I can just not worry about stuff.” He had plenty to worry about, after all. “But, no, I just try not to care about bullies.” The fact that she said he was going to regret what he said was sad. Did she not have friends? “I rarely regret things. I’m Jack-Jack. You can shorten it how you want.”

Honestly, Meg couldn’t imagine the mortification that would run through her had she actually injured the kid. Not only that, with how deep in debt she currently was, she couldn’t afford for someone to start a lawsuit against her for injuries. But, thankfully both of those awkward situations seemed to be avoided, and she was simply left with a… well, still slightly awkward circumstance. Though one she could definitely handle. “Yeah, that’s obvious. Usually my cart ramming skills are a little more on par,” she joked, a tight smile spreading onto her lips.

“Do you practice very often?” he asked with a small grin of his own, now making sure he was well out of the way, glancing at the chips again. He still needed to get his own stuff into his cart, and...choices. Still, at least he wasn’t being knocked over by a shopping cart. That helped. “Or am I just lucky like that?”

Norman had to laugh at that, shaking his head as he watched the screen. “Probably won’t be too long a wait, still,” he shrugged. “It’s a pretty quick play in the moment, but the full game is… it’s long enough.” He nodded, it was a big enough event when they finally released another game in the series. “They’re pretty cool. Like, this one brought back a lot of bosses and creatures from the old ones, like they were revived and stuff. It’s a fairly consistent storyline and the play was upgraded but it’s the same pattern, y’know? What do you normally play?”

Jack-Jack nodded. That sort of figured, but he also thought that this guy wasn’t giving himself enough credit. Sure, Jack-Jack hadn’t played this game in a very long while, but this was still farther than he’d ever gotten in the thing. “Is it arcade-only or is it on anything else?” he asked. If it was about patterns and everything, if he didn’t have to keep paying to play it, he might actually beat it sometime. “Oh, I uh...It’s mostly anything portable, really, I don’t have a lot of game time. Pokemon, Professor Layton, Animal Crossing. There’s one I really liked called Trace Memory but not a lot of people played it.” And he could just keep not mentioning Nintendogs out loud because he knew better.

“Princess!” Henry hissed, trying to keep his voice as low as possible. God, if only the press could see him now – knee-deep in some shrubs, hair frazzled with bits of leaves sticking out, and desperately calling for a dog he’d let out of his sights for just a few seconds. Henry could already hear PETA beating down his father’s door. “Listen, you little rat, I’m giving you ‘til the count of three before I leave you out here to die. You hear me? Once the moon comes out, you’re going to make a starving wolf very–”

As he furiously spun in place, Henry noticed a passerby looking upon the scene. In an instant, he’d shut his mouth and stood frozen in place. “I love animals,” he soon blurted out, just moments before his mother’s Pomeranian began barking in the distance. “Does…does that sound like a Pomeranian to you, by any chance? Asking for a friend.”

Alright, so that rant was...not one of the things Jack-Jack had expected to hear on his way home from the library, but there it was. He had heard a lot, gotten a little confused, paused, looking at the guy in the bushes. And then a weird recovery.

“Uh-huh,” was all he could manage at first, adjusting his backpack straps just to have something to do with his hands. “I mean...sounds like a dog? Did you lose yours?” He knew that he wasn’t supposed to help people who said they had lost dogs technically, but he was an adult now, so maybe he could get a pass on his dad’s street smarts advice.

Coraline had a lot going on. With her job being raided for weapons and her nightmares growing more and more detailed, it was a lot on her head and her energy. In all honesty, she just wanted to sleep until she died, but since she could actually die in her sleep if anything she had been told about her dreams were accurate,  the phrase ended up being more of a phrase than an actual wish. So instead she smoked. Out in public, ready to hear someone talk to her about the dangers of the habit or how it was illegal or something boring. Regardless she didn’t care. Either she gets arrested or she would smoke in peace.

As the first stranger started to hover over her, she extended her blunt to them. “Want a hit? it’s like sleepy time tea but better. And it’s medical so don’t give me that look.”

Jack-Jack was headed back home from his martial arts class, duffel bag slung over his shoulder. He was walking because mom was busy, and dad was still at work, and he didn’t mind it, really. Of course, walking usually meant minding his business, but he recognized the smell and didn’t want anyone to get in trouble.

“Uh. No thank you?” Was that what you were supposed to say? He knew no was supposed to be in there somewhere, but...Oh well. “Just wanted to tell you there’s a patrol car that comes through here pretty regularly soon? Just in case you don’t have your prescription on you.”

“Pretty high. Are you a gamer? Or like an arcade wizard? Because you’re going to have to be one of those to come close.” She smiled at him. It felt weird to smile, but she liked this guy so far. “You say that now. But once it happens the tables normally tend to turn. And not in my favor.”

“Oh. No, I’m not either of those, but I don’t let stuff like that stop me.” He grinned. Leave it to him to find the one person in here that had a problem with the place, huh? “Well, if they’re gonna be like that, I’d rather hang out with you than them, even if I don’t know your name or anything.”

Meg honestly hadn’t been expecting to nearly bum-rush someone on a simple trip to the store. Still, the suddenness of it all had her speaking without thinking, and she found herself rolling her eyes at the whole situation. “No, you’re good. I was just… frustrated,” she huffed out, glancing down at the hand now wrapped around her cart’s edge. A brow rose, chin motioning towards the blonde with a weak, “Nice reflexes,”

Well, at least she was apologizing, that was nice. He understood frustrated, even if he didn’t tend to just take it out in the grocery store. And she was complimenting his reflexes. He took his hand from the cart, looking it over. Well, she hadn’t run into him that badly. “It’s fine. And thanks, I try.”

Although she was loathe to admit it, some of the better parts of her work day were running errands for Hades. At least then Meg could be out from under his watchful eye for a time, even if some of the tasks were tiresome. She’d simply gotten accustomed to running this way and that for him; he said jump, she asked how high. A twisted sort of relationship built solely on debt, but, she had to keep her head out of the deep. Sooner or later, she’d be finished with this sad little period in her life, and moving on to better things. She had to believe it would be so - otherwise, what was the point in going on? As per his request, she had taken to the grocer’s, picking up a few janitorial essentials for the Cemetery. Items that she herself would no doubt be putting to use upon returning. But at least for the time being, she had a little breathing room. At least, she did, until she noticed somebody just… blocking her way towards the next aisle. Sighing through her nose, she ground out a gruff ‘Scuse me’ as she shouldered past them, momentarily irked to the point where she didn’t see another body headed opposite her. With a tight gasp, she managed to stop her cart just an inch short of ramming into them. “Gods, watch it!”

He was supposed to be grabbing groceries for mom. He’d been sent with the card they used for groceries, which had been laid out on the counter waiting for him, along with a list. Jack-Jack loved his mom a lot, but she must have been in a hurry because half of what she’d written didn’t make much sense. On top of that, she had written ‘lunch’ which was so vague that he was going to have to assume he had to make the choice and why was there so much to get?

Jack-Jack had spaced out a good bit, looking at various chip bag mixes, when a bit of a screech made him snap out of it. His hand was quickly up to stop the cart that was just shy of his hip, on reflex.

“Oh, my bad.” He didn’t really think it was his bad, but no need to start a fight.

Norman shook his head as the title screen for the next chapter came up. He’d switched up his weapon quickly and let the cutscene play, shaking his head a little. “A whole game? Like… the whole thing? I can’t do that, I’ve never even seen that happen to be honest.” Or he had on a play through, but that was different and had taken like an hour, minimum “Or, like, until I get my butt kicked? Because that’s probably not too far off, half the time I don’t even survive the Hangedman.” As the gameplay started again, he focused, mind only wandering when he had a moment for it to. “Did you play the older ones? They brought some of the creatures back tfor this, it’s pretty cool.”

“No, just until you get your butt kicked,” Jack-Jack answered, deciding that the best way to phrase it would be the way this guy had. Though, he wouldn’t be bothered waiting for the whole game to be over. He didn’t have anywhere to go and didn’t exactly want to go straight home. Who knows what might be happening there? “Nah, just this one, and only because it’s been here so long. It is super cool, though.” Did he usually do the best with horror? No. But he could handle pixels. “I think I’d like to, though.”

“Easier said than done, right?” Rapunzel laughed, but she wasn’t kidding, not entirely. Ignoring bullies wasn’t so easy when she believed her biggest bully to be her mother. Of course, at the time, she didn’t know the woman wasn’t her mother. “You’re so good! I believe you can defeat them! Have you completed this game before?” She didn’t mean to ask too many questions that she distracted him, but it was just in curious nature. 

“Maybe,” he chuckled. Sometimes ignoring didn’t work, he got that. He’d had bullies over the years, from skipping a grade to...well, just being a nerd in general, he supposed. Of course, once he’d started getting muscle mass, they had learned their lessons. And he’d only gotten one suspension. “Oh, no, not yet. I always get close then lose, but it’s still fun, so!” Reacting to the fight on screen, he jumped a bit, slamming the button a little harder than needed. “Oh my god, I beat him.”
