World War II, part of the reason why a naval, and used to be an air force base, was due to part of the treaty was that Japan can no longer have their own military. Their Defense Force is really part of their State Police, as per the treaty. In turn, the U.S. is supposed to defend Japan. The AFB that was in Misawa would end up having a "Elephant Cage" radar system to help locate and listen in on U.S.S.R. nuclear submarines. The Okinawa naval base is still around, and probably the closest to both Koreas and China at the moment. Interesting things you learn about the U.S. military involvement in Japan years after you were a little kid military brat in the 80's. Like, for real. I didn't know my dad learned Russian to listen on them until a few years after being in Misawa, and over three decades after, learning about the decommissioned "Elephant Cage".
