“The school I went to was big on encouraging creativity and letting students do their own thing. We used to have showcases where people dance from everything from classical to grime.” She explained as she sipped on her water. “I’ve been working so hard on catching up with the latest choreography that I felt like I needed a break.” 

“That’s pretty cool. Better than most American schools. My school wasn’t big on creativity.” He shook his head and chuckled. In school it had bothered him that he had different interests and that he was picked on for it, now he didn’t really care. He’d had plenty of time to get over it. “Ah, yeah.” He answered with a nod. “I can understand that. Not sure why they’re having us learn so much new stuff when the next season hasn’t even been announced yet. Maybe they’re trying to make sure we don’t get too out of practice.” he joked.

                  SHE CAN’T HELP BUT SMILE FAINTLY, averting her gaze for a moment. “I’m really sure,” she confirms with a nod, looking up at him once more as she speaks. “I have salad at home — there’s not much of a point in spending money on one.”

“Well, okay.” He tried to shrug it off and not look too concerned. “But if you change your mind in the next few hours, let me know.”

                 “—I’M SURE.” A nod accompanies her response and she can’t help but smile as she looks up at him. “Really, it’s fine. I’ll probably just head home after rehearsal anyway. I’m not sure I have the energy to stay here any later than I have to — NO OFFENSE.”

He crouched down in front of her and raised an eyebrow. “You sure? Really sure?” he asked. “I mean I’m just sayin’, you look kinda hungry. I can get you a salad or something instead if you’re not into that greasy American pizza.”

“Yeah, got to keep those creative juices flowing. Can’t be always drilling myself in the newest choreography.” She chuckled lightly as he pulled on his sweatshirt. She took the opportunity to get some water, blushing when he told her that he liked what he’d seen in her dance. “Thank you.” 

“Yeah, it’s always a good idea. Sometimes you gotta get back to what you love about dance in the first place.” he said, shrugging. “I mean, the performances are fun and all, but sometimes those tough rehearsals can make you question a little bit why you’re even doing this. If you can put that aside for a little bit and just dance, it’s kind of a nice reminder that, oh, this actually is fun.” He shrugged again and laughed a little, then gave her a bright smile. “You’re welcome.”

Still frowning, Marina nodded. “I think there might be” she answered quietly. “I just mean that I’ve been there before” she added, shrugging a little. “I see a lot of my old behaviors in her. But then I always have to wonder if I’m just reading too much into things. I’d love to be wrong about this, but I don’t want to assume I’m reading too much into it and then there actually is something wrong, you know?”

He was a little surprised by her answer but tried not to react too much to that personal bit of information. “Yeah, I get that. But if you’re not the only one who’s noticing, odds are you’re not reading too much into it.” he had to point out. “I mean I’ve noticed some stuff, maybe not as much as you have though.” He stopped for a minute and frowned, then raised one brow at Marina. “So what do we do about it? If there is something going on we can’t just ignore it, right?”

Beth smiled as she settled back onto her feet, banging her pointe shoes against the floor lightly. She did it when she was a bit nervous. “Oh, back in London, they said that we should always have two pieces ready in case of an audition or a showcase. I’m just working on a new piece.” She explained. 

“Okay, makes sense.” he answered, nodding. “Plus it’s always nice to have something outside company repertoire to work on.” he added, shrugging and pulling on his sweatshirt. “It’s looking really good, by the way.”

Beth loved to dance to classic musical, the music written for ballet but occasionally she liked to dance to more unique choices. She usually waited until the rehearsal room was clear to work on audition pieces or showcase solos to all manner of genres. Today she was working on a piece when she heard the door open. She paused in her pirouettes and cringed at how loud the music was. “Sorry, is it too loud?” She asked.

“Nah, it’s fine.” he assured her. “The building’s pretty much empty, I don’t think it’s bothering anyone” he added. “Didn’t mean to interrupt, just forgot my sweatshirt.” he said, walking across the studio and grabbing the hoodie he had left hanging over the barre in the corner. “What’re you working on?”

“I’ll try” she laughed, shaking her head. “Yeah, Saskia’s one of them. I think she works harder than she needs to though. I don’t think she sees how good she is.” She stopped for a minute, a deep frown settling on her lips when he continued. “Yeah… I don’t think she really eats much of anything. I’m kind of worried about her, to be honest.”

He nodded, starting to look concerned while he listened. “I hadn’t really noticed, but now that you mentioned it, she does always seem to turn down snacks every time I offer them to her. Thought it might’ve just been a she doesn’t eat junk kind of thing though. You really think there’s cause to be worried? I mean I’m pretty sure you’re more observant than me so if you think there is I’m gonna believe you.”

It wasn’t hard to spot when some of her old habits of overworking herself were starting to come back. The fact that they had a day off and she’d been in the studio for almost half of it was a prime indication. As she finished running through the variation and the music came to a stop, she almost jumped when she heard Jackson’s voice. “Well, that’s kind of the point, isn’t it?” she laughed quietly when she turned to him, a little out of breath. “I don’t make it look as easy as some of the other dancers” she added with a shrug.

“Girl, you gotta stop being so hard on yourself!” He shook his head at her in mock disappointment. “Your dancing is pretty damn perfect.” He gave her a curious look, lifting one eyebrow. “You mean Saskia? I’m pretty sure that girl was genetically engineered to dance. It’s kinda freaky. Not like she’s freaky, she’s a total sweetheart. She doesn’t eat pizza though, so I gotta be a little suspicious about that. Who doesn’t eat pizza?”

                “YOU NEVER KNOW, it might kill me.” She gives him a slight smile as she speaks, her expression making it clear that she’s joking. “Maybe I’m just picky about pizza — maybe I’ve been spoiled by my mum’s homemade pizza and nothing else tastes as good.”

“‘K, fair enough” he chuckled. “But I still think it’s not gonna kill you. You sure you don’t want anything?”

He didn’t want to get in the way, so he just stood in the entrance of the studio for a minute and waited for the music to stop. “You always make that look really easy” he commented, walking inside.

                     UPON HEARING HIS QUESTION, she looks up at him from where she’s seated on the floor, pausing in the midst of sewing ribbons onto a new pair of pointe shoes. “Um… I don’t really eat pizza — I guess I’m fine with whatever everyone else wants…”

“Your mom’s Italian and you ‘don’t really eat pizza’?” He gave her a disbelieving look. “Aw come on, Saskia. Live a little. It’s not going to kill you.”

“Hey, so I’m gonna order a couple pizzas for everybody after rehearsal, got an preferred toppings? So far I’ve got lots of requests for cheese and one for mushrooms and olives.”
