Audrey grinned. “Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to do what I love for a living. I can’t imagine what my life would be like if I had a typical 9 to 5 job.”

“Same” Marina agreed with a nod. “I worked in a restaurant in high school, and during the summers I pretty much worked 9 to 5, so I guess that was kind of typical job?” She frowns a little. “It was pretty much miserable.”

“Or an unlimited supply of caffeine.” Audrey chuckled and tilted her head. “ But then that feeling of being satisfied and happy with your work always makes up for it in my opinion.”

“Caffeine seems like the more plausible of those two options” Marina laughed, nodding a minute later. “That’s definitely true. I had a job as a waitress in high school and the work was almost as tiring but nowhere near as satisfying.”

“Yeah, thankfully.” She answered, laughing a little too. “Gotta keep up that perfect attendance record, right?”

“Well it can’t hurt” she answered, nodding. “But you won’t get in trouble for missing a day here and there.”

Audrey smiled weakly as her coworker yawned. “Guess I’m not the only one here completely exhausted.”

“You’re definitely not the only one” Marina laughed, smiling in return and shaking her head. “If there’s anyone who’s not exhausted after that, I’d be willing to bet they have some sort of superpowers.”

He nodded, starting to look concerned while he listened. “I hadn’t really noticed, but now that you mentioned it, she does always seem to turn down snacks every time I offer them to her. Thought it might’ve just been a she doesn’t eat junk kind of thing though. You really think there’s cause to be worried? I mean I’m pretty sure you’re more observant than me so if you think there is I’m gonna believe you.”

Still frowning, Marina nodded. “I think there might be” she answered quietly. “I just mean that I’ve been there before” she added, shrugging a little. “I see a lot of my old behaviors in her. But then I always have to wonder if I’m just reading too much into things. I’d love to be wrong about this, but I don’t want to assume I’m reading too much into it and then there actually is something wrong, you know?”

“Tell me about it.” She sighed and shook her head as she took a pause. “I thought there was no way I was gonna get here on time today. I was so sure I was going to be late, I’m not sure how I even managed to be early.”

“Well, no sense in questioning it” she laughed softly. “Sometimes stuff just works out when you least expect it to, I guess.”

“Surely a more intense rehearsal is the perfect reason for drinks.” 

“Yeah, you’re right. I completely agree.” Grinning, she nodded as she spoke. “Shall we head out then?”

“Girl, you gotta stop being so hard on yourself!” He shook his head at her in mock disappointment. “Your dancing is pretty damn perfect.” He gave her a curious look, lifting one eyebrow. “You mean Saskia? I’m pretty sure that girl was genetically engineered to dance. It’s kinda freaky. Not like she’s freaky, she’s a total sweetheart. She doesn’t eat pizza though, so I gotta be a little suspicious about that. Who doesn’t eat pizza?”

“I’ll try” she laughed, shaking her head. “Yeah, Saskia’s one of them. I think she works harder than she needs to though. I don’t think she sees how good she is.” She stopped for a minute, a deep frown settling on her lips when he continued. “Yeah... I don’t think she really eats much of anything. I’m kind of worried about her, to be honest.”

“Okay that I can understand. When you’re a kid you don’t really have all that grown up stuff to worry about” she answered. “But now I have to worry about getting out of the house on time so I can get Maria to my cousin and get to class on time… I guess as a kid you don’t have to worry about that stuff and it makes having no electricity a little more interesting.”

Marina nodded in agreement. “Ok, yeah, that’s all too true” she answered. “When you have somewhere to be and you can’t see anything - that’s a little annoying.”

He didn’t want to get in the way, so he just stood in the entrance of the studio for a minute and waited for the music to stop. “You always make that look really easy” he commented, walking inside.

It wasn’t hard to spot when some of her old habits of overworking herself were starting to come back. The fact that they had a day off and she’d been in the studio for almost half of it was a prime indication. As she finished running through the variation and the music came to a stop, she almost jumped when she heard Jackson’s voice. “Well, that’s kind of the point, isn’t it?” she laughed quietly when she turned to him, a little out of breath. “I don’t make it look as easy as some of the other dancers” she added with a shrug.

“Yeah, hopefully” she answered. “Maria actually handled it better than I did” she laughed. “She didn’t mind the heat too much and thought getting ready in the dark was kind of an adventure. She actually thought it was fun. I wish I could see it that way.”

“I used to always like when the power went out when I was a kid too” Marina laughed. “I guess it’s just one of those things that’s exciting when we’re little but just turns into a hassle when we’re adults.”

                ONE BROW ARCHES UPWARD at the comment about Netflix, a little smile making its way across her lips a moment later. “Yeah, I’ve heard that,” Saskia replies, letting out a quiet laugh. “I’ve never really looked into it though — I mean, it’s not like I’ve really had the time… But I guess if I stop spending my Sundays in the studio, I’ll have time then…”

“It’s worth looking into” Marina answered. “And it’ll keep you busy if you have trouble finding things to do on days off. Who knows, maybe it’ll even give you motivation to get some rest and be lazy for a day every now and then. I think an occasional lazy day would do you some good.”

                “—MAYBE I’LL CONSIDER every other Sunday,” Saskia responds after a brief moment of consideration. Logically, she knows she can afford to spend her Sundays resting, but then again, she’s never been exactly logical when it comes to her career. “I might start to go a little crazy if I took every Sunday off — I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.”

“Ok, that’s better than nothing I guess.” She couldn’t help seeing a little bit of her younger self in Saskia, and that worried her. “Well if you’re that concerned about being bored, Netflix is a good investment.”

“Yeah, it works. But there’s no hot water, so I’m stuck with cold showers until the power goes back on. Which hopefully will be today sometimes, since I paid the bill this morning.” 

“Ok, that’s not too bad. Maybe by the time you get home tonight it’ll be back on. How’d your daughter handle the lack of power this morning?”

                     “I TOOK A SUNDAY OFF about a month ago,” she replies, shrugging slightly as she speaks. “Or mostly took it off, anyway. I stretched a little, of course. But mostly I rested. I’ll take another day off in two or three more months.”

“A month ago?” she asked, surprised. “You know we don’t have rehearsals and class on Sundays for a reason, right? So we can rest. It wouldn’t hurt you to take every Sunday off.”

“Well, my power was turned off because I’ve been so busy with rehearsals and forgot to pay the bill. So I woke up in a 98-degree apartment with no lights. I think my day is going pretty well, considering.”

“Does your sink at least work when you have no power...? In the house we lived in when I was a kid, every time the power went out we also had no running water.” She shook her head, laughing a little at the memory. “Anyway, any idea when your power’s expected to go back on? I can’t imagine trying to sleep in that heat would be very comfortable.”
