The Lupalope - Progress Report 4
We are very close to moving into the post production process for The Lupalope and have learned a lot about working with 3D stop motion figures along the way. We have completed four scenes with two remaining. Our scenes have combined the top down shooting set up and side view angles using two kinds of character rigs. The first we developed was thicker sculpture wire hanging down the characters’ backs and acting as a third tripod leg, and the other is a wooden frame that is built up around the set and the characters hang down from it like marionette dolls. The first method is easier to quickly make small smooth movements as the character is grounded and has additional armature to manipulate, but the second method allows for the characters to jump and other physical actions since they do not need to balance on the ground. Planning and building these rigs has been a significant part of our preproduction, running concurrently to some scenes that were already in production, learning that an important component of designing stop motion characters is building them with the action of the scene in mind. Dividing work so that some of us can animate or archive photos or build more props/assets while the other tools were in use by other group members has allowed us to work quickly and efficiently so far.
