Back in 2013, I posted a Welcome to Night Vale fic and someone commented, “I’m autistic and I see myself a lot in the way you write Carlos. Did you intend for him to autistic?”

And I was like “I’m flattered you think so! No, he’s not intended to be autistic, but I’m glad you can see yourself in him.”

Now twelve years later I spent some time this evening trying to track down that comment to give a very belated clarification. Whoever you were stranger, hey. I only said no because I based Carlos heavily on me, and since I wasn’t autistic, Carlos wouldn’t be either. Well. I’ve learned some stuff in the intervening decade that strongly support your literary analysis.

The Enigma of Amigara Fault

This short story by Junji Ito is about a fault that appears in Amigara mountain after an earthquake. The earthquake exposes countless human-shaped holes in the mountain which seem to have been made about a thousand years ago. People, intrigued by these  silhouettes, gather at the site and that’s when things get creepy.

It’s about a 15-20 min read, but if you haven’t read this before, you’re in for a treat. Link above.

this doesn’t just apply to taboo sexual fantasies but mental health issues such as intrusive thoughts and violent ideation as well

we get intrusive thoughts about pedophilia, incest, bigotry, and violence. we used to deal with homicidal / violent ideation, too, and many of our system members still do from time to time.

is it gross and unpleasant? definitely! do my thoughts define my moral character? nope, and they don’t define yours, either. sometimes brains just think shit and there’s nothing deeper about it.

actions and real-world harm will always be more important than what goes on in someone’s imagination or the type of fiction they write and enjoy.

someone can be the kindest person you know and secretly struggle with violent ideation. someone can be the kindest person you know and enjoy dark, disturbing fiction. someone can be the kindest person you know and struggle with incestous, zoophilic, pedophilic, abusive, or bigoted intrusive thoughts.
