The Srathmore 400 Acrylic Pad is such an OP multimedia paper/surface!

Holy moly~ : o So, I recently purchased 4 different kinds of papers specifically for acrylic paints and I won't ramble about them all but like ALL new papers they underwent the full treatment and got a cross-media sheet made with the first page to test their compatibility with all the medias I dabble in to see what all I can use on that surface if I feel like it and out of ALL the types of papers I own (which honestly is too many to list now) the Strathmore 400 Acrylic Paper pad I just bought has an insane level of compatibiity with almost EVERYTHING (dry and wet media) and makes a seriously OP multimedia surface! >: o It's literally the first paper/surface I've found in about 2 years of testing out multiple types, including mixed media pads and bristol pads, that works and works WELL with THAT MANY types of things. I'm insanely impressed and didn't think it could be done.

(For anyone interested in a breakdown of what all has been tested on it so far it's compatible with Alcohol Markers (Sharpie, Blick Studio, Prismacolor Premier) Acrylic Paint Markers (2 brands tested), Colored Pencil (wax-based Prismacolor Premier, burnshes nicely), Chalk Pastel Pencil, Graphite (blends and erases cleaninly), Drawing Chalks (Prang Pastello, Prang Ambrite and Crayola Drawing Chalk), Full coats of Acrylic paint with a dry brush and mixed with 50% water to test water compatibility on the paper since it's so soooo important to keep the surface wet when painting with acrylics in order to blend them at all), Watercolor, and Gouache (though I tend not to count Gouache because it's cheating and looks good and works on everything, it's too OP of a paint lol) I've yet to test my oil paints or oil pastels on it but I'm looking forward to it since it seems like it'll handle those well too at this point _

For those interested in the paper specs it's 246lb, 400 gsm heavyweight with a linen finish. And it well out-performed the Strathmore 500 Heavyweight mixed media paper which had feathering around the edges with the Prismacolor Brand Alcohol Markers, worse results with watercolor, bad support for acrylic paint and water in general, and bad support with oil pastel. The 500 Heavyweight had a 350lb, 570 gsm and 100% cotton, so I was honestly expecting it to perform way better with wet media and paints than it actually did.

Paints Used: Kuretake Gansai Tambi 36ct Watercolor Set Brushes Used: Watercolor Round Wash brush and a small soft brush. Paper Used: Blick Fabriano Watercolor Paper, Hot Press, 300gsm. This comes in Cold Press. *Get a higher gsm if you don't want your paper to curl at the edges or if you plan to use heavy amounts of water for best results.

Monster Clay has got to be my favorite clay to use for sculpting. It's so easy to manipulate and smooth out. It's such a shame there's no way to harden it permanantly ToT I don't want to deal with mold making and casting and resin and any of that. I would love to keep what I make with it and paint it though. Always get a bit sad that I can't in the end.

Cheapest Poor-Man hack for practicing acrylic paint painting and mixing and blending. A piece of cardboard from a shipping box. A paper towel from the cheapest roll. Glue stick to stick the paper towel to the carboard. A travel size spray bottle to spritz the paper towel and get it wet. Cheap acrylic paints. Cheap acrylic paint brush. Then go to town. It blends it sickeningly well because it keeps it wet and I hate it.

What do you compare art to in your head? For me it's always been math. Bullshit it and people will be impressed and take your word for it. They're not going to go through the effort of learning it to see if it's done right themselves. The fundamentals are your formulas. You need to know them to know how to solve common issues. Following the simple step by steps give you the solutions to common-place problems every time. These formulas don't change. Which is why they can be taught and replicated time and time again. Once you have a strong understanding of your formulas it doesn't matter what you do it on the only thing that changes is your tool. Whether on paper or a chalkboard or anything else. Digital art is a lot like using a calculator for math to me. It'll sure as hell speed up the process and cut out a lot of time consumming annoying bits but it's not going to know the formulas for you and it's not going to put in the numbers for you, you still have to do it yourself step by step. I really love art. I really hate math. But for some reason the comparison of the two, how they're done, how they can be done, and how non artists percieve them has always been really similar to me. As an aside: AI generated art feels like asking Google what the answer to something is then just using that. You don't personally understand anything and you're not really doing anything to get there. You're just copy pasting whatever is thrown back at you. So I still don't really have any interest in it.

Tonight's before bed doodle is this Prang Pastello Paper Chalk piece on Canson Mi-Tientes Velvet Pastel Paper. I got a sheet of this in to try because I saw a lot of really good reviews. I had very high expectations it didn't meet. For whatever reason the only thing it really worked with that I had instead of my soft or oil pastels was the Prang. Maybe this paper is amazing for extra soft pastels or pan pastel. I don't own either of those. I'm happy I had a bit of self reservation and only ordered a sheet instead of a full pad though. Ah, also, the Prang was blended with a tortillon. It didn't blend at all with your fingers on this type of surface and that's the issue I ran into with all the other stuff I tried. I was just expecting it to blend easier and smoother than it actually did. Oh well.

EDIT: Okay, I spent some more quality time with this surface and my oil pastels and I'll say this surface is actually amazing with oil pastel if you're an artist that heavily HEAVILY incorporate's oil into your pieces to blend and paint with the sticks. It ate the crap out of all the oil I loaded onto it with absolutely no issue and blended out insanely smoothly and uniformly. That's where this surface really shines. Don't bother if you use dry techniques mostly though.

Ngl, there's really something mildly irritating about the fact that my $40+ UArt pastel pad looks and works better with my $3 Crayola drawing chalk than it does with either my soft or oil pastels……. T_T It even looks and blends smoother than the Sennelier Soft Pastel sticks I bought just to try them…. I don't want to buy that paper again though. It's too expensive! ><

I have Mungyo brand soft pastels and after trying to draw with them on multiple different surfaces now there's def just an issue with that pastel brand. It does not look smooth or want to blend together at all. I bought Sennelier soft pastel sticks because they're highly recommended as a brand just to try them. They're smooth af and blend beautifully. Lastly I use Prang drawing chalk, like the Mungyo I mostly had it on hand to color clay with for sculptures, but it's fun to draw with from time to time but only looks smooth and solid on certain types of paper, like the ridiculoudly expensive Strathmore 500 Mixed Media paper T_T. I picked up some Crayola Drawing Chalk to see if it was better to use on cheaper paper and tried it on the UArt pad for the hell of it next to the Sennelier and I'm so mad it's EASIER to blend and looks slighlty smoother on there. Oil pastel works okay on the UArt pad too. But that thing is so ridiculously expensive! Why are the two best surfaces for $3 kids drawing chalk the most expensive in the world? Wtf.

Still have a weird relationship with digital art now it would seem. I can't say I enjoyed this much. But here's my rat-boy. I sculpted him a while back now. Never drew him though. The sculpture came out looking oddly over feminine though. Oh well.

Got a free sample pack of the Stillman & Birn Mixed media Premium Sketchbooks when I ordered my markers. Went through all the sample sheets tonight and tested all the mediums I regularly play with on them (acrylic paint markers, alcohol markers, chalk, soft pastel, oil pastel, colored pencil, acrylic paint, and watercolor. Didn't test graphite pencil, charcoal or gouache 'cause I ran out of room on the sheets) but yeah. I wasn't wildly impressed by any of them magically supporting ALL of those at once but I will say the Nova Series in Grey worked great with acrylic paint markers and oil pastels over all the others. The Zeta was the best imo for alcohol markers and colored pencil but tbh it was pretty similar to Strathmore Smooth Bristol and look-wise pretty similar to just regular letter paper, just a thicker more durable paper with a heavy weight for wet media so no alcohol ink bleed through and you can get away with a burnsihed look with pencil with less pressure. Last one worth mentioning imo was the Beta. Beta worked and looked best with watercolor and acrylic paint. Actually slightly interested in picking up a pad of that for watercolor painting sometime. I really like my Blick Fabriano Watercolor pad but the Beta held up SO MUCH BETTER under wet loads and water than the Blick pad does and there was no pilling or degrading or swelling or wrinkling or warping at all. Just wish it came hot pressed (smooth surface) instead of cold press. Not a huge fan of seeing texture on the paper. Anywho, here's a bad phone pic of something I did with acrylic markers on the back of the Nova sheet after testing the fronts of all of them. As usual my phone makes everything look a million times worse than it does though lol.
