kazimir malevich
russian artist from the early 20th century, early work very interested in cubism. he founded 'suprematism' - an art movement focused on basic geometric shapes - 'the supremacy of pure artistic feeling' rather than on visual depiction of objects. 'primicy of pure feeling in creative art. the visual phenomena of the objective world, in themselves meaningless, however the significant thing is the feeling, as such, quite apart from the environment in which it is called forth.'
'art no longer cares to serve the state and religion, it no longer wishes to illustrate the history of manners, it wants to have nothing to do with the object, as such, and believes that it can exist, in and for itself, without "things"' (that is, the "time-tested well-spring of life")
'...a blissful sense of liberating non-objectivity drew me forth into a "desert", where nothing is real except feeling...' malevich's work came about in revolutionary russia, old order was being removed, stalinism was taking hold from 1924 and limiting the freedom of artists. the only work of malevich allowed to be shown in the communist state was his only figurative work, a self portrait, very traditional in it's style, but he signed the piece witha tiny black over white square.
reflection:
i am interested in the 'suprematism' theories developed by malevich, the time in which his ideas were conceived is very relevant, under stalin's rule creatives were heavily monitered and their freedoms restricted. the geometric forms used by malevich are relevant in my own work, his use of basic shapes overlapping gives an element of depth to the work, something i want to work on also. this combined with simple colours evokes a feeling a curriosity and an interest in the forms rather than wanting to know any formal relation to the shapes.

lou reed - walk on the wild side
had this song in my head all day
my grandad dan armstrong was the session musician who played the original bass line to this song
this is the video piece we created as a collaboration to display in nest, developing upon our original idea of presenting a fake gallery stall similar to ones we had seen at the highly comercial arti2012 art fair. i shot most of the footage (except the footage of myself) it was enjoyable and i was very pleased with the outcome, we had a mixed responce especially from those who thought our paintings were serious, ranging from 'this is art!' to 'is this work yours?...it's so bad you deserve to die.'
good night in the end.
vj work reflection
despite having a very stressful end to the course after having to wrestle with final cut pro to a point at which i was happy on my own computer, that was stolen and so we had to start again with two days left. my partner had created a number of form based layers on after effects which we combined with my filmed and found footage. we made a piece about 4 minutes long as a show reel, we plan on editing it down further in the future and making the ending footage a bit shorter, however, we were pleased with the outcome, felt that the overall work was strong and that we had overcome the issues we faced when vjing live.
we have another set on december the 7th and i'm pretty excited. hopefully we are going to continue working on our footage and preparing more work for a set.

yesterday evening we were in amsterdam and went to a club called studio 80, these guys played, it was a good atmosphere when it filled out and the house grew on me as the night went on, lots more amusing dutch dancing. plus on a very exciting note, i found the coffee shop my friends and i went to when we first went to amsterdam and bought space cakes which had some very euphoric, scary and enlightening results. will definitely return and purchase more now i've found it.
Laat je haar neer - Pipilotti Rist
the title for this work is translated to mean both let your hair down and lay her down. the piece is a permanent installation within the boijmans museum and consists of a rope netting high up near the ceiling of the building a scattering of pillows and a projector beaming onto the above ceiling.
the viewer is invited to explore the space themselves, there are no instructions or exact directions for the viewer to follow, it is left up to them if they wish to ascend the stairs and climb up over the precarious netting and have the courage to lay back on it and finally relax to watch the film. Rist's work often involves the manipulation or unsaid direction of the viewer's body in order to view her work (most often projections) in the way she wants. the video itself was interesting and followed the pattern of style of her early works, bright and contrasting colours often with sections of the human form.
it is also possible whilst still in the installation to view some other video work from the museum's collection.
reflection:
this work is another inspiring example to me by Rist of the importance of whole sensory involvement of the viewer, the space is changed and the emotions of the viewer within the space are changed by its intervention. being in a position of relaxation and calm is contrasted with the fear of being very high up in an apparently flimsy rope net making it interesting to observe how other viewers choose to interact with the work.
