Rape culture is no joke.
“If the cure for cancer was in the mind of a girl, we might never discover it.”
Myra Sadker via everyday feminism / We shouldn’t have “male-dominated” and “female-dominated” fields that separate us into gender-specific jobs that don’t correspond with our actual aspirations. /
#WTF
Hobby Lobby still covers Viagra and vasectomies though. Don't worry, guys. SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW IN A JUST WORLD ANY OF THIS MAKES SENSE?

Dear SCOTUS
Barf. I'M SO FUCKING CONFUSED.
7 ways we can fix gender inequality other than with confidence
The most recent encouragement to just “fake it til you make it” comes from Katty Kay and Claire Shipman who published a feature on the “confidence gap” in the Atlantic. In the undoubtedly well-meaning piece, Kay and Shipman share troubling research outlining an equally gloomy picture: Women undervalue their accomplishments, and it’s holding them back in the workplace.
Although it’s true that some women suffer from more self-defeating thoughts and lower self-esteem, gender inequality can’t be reduced to mental health issues. Women’s lack of opportunities in the workplace are due to much deeper issues, and it’s time we admit that. Instead of telling women to change their personalities, maybe it’s time we take a look at the entire system.
Here’s a (non-exhaustive) list of ways we can help women that don’t include telling them just to hold their head up high.

The evolution of marriage equality in the United States.
Photographer Kristy Boyce wants to show “What Dyke Looks Like”
Photographic journalist Kristy Boyce has turned her gaze to Russia’s LGBT community, in light of the country’s most recent wave of anti-LGBT activist legislation and the Sochi Olympics.
Through her ongoing project, “What Dyke Looks Like,” Boyce traveled to Russia to document, she explains, “the hypocrisy of having the Olympics in a country while its people suffer human rights abuses.” Boyce believes that this particular endeavor in portrait-making is a collaborative process that functions as a kind of “reverse discourse,” as a way to give Russia’s LGBT community an avenue of expression. In tandem with this objective, she has also produced video interviews of members of the community in order to “allow a more dominant, direct voice of [the] people,” from coming out stories to testimonies of bigoted violence experienced against them.
BREAKING: A federal judge has ruled Virginia’s ban on marriage for same-sex couples unconstitutional. The ruling has been stayed pending appeal. Share this graphic to spread the good news!
Virginia IS for lovers. All lovers!
PREACH! The intense gender stereotypes companies place on toys is harmful and silly.
Dale Hansen, Texas Sports Anchor, delivers a great piece on the NFL and Michael Sam. Also, I love love that he quotes Audre Lorde, “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.”
The “Lean In Collection” launched this past Monday out of a partnership with Getty Images and LeanIn.org. The collection features more than 2,500 photos of women; photos that more accurately depict today's woman. Disappointed I don't see a whole lot of variety in body types and sizes. However, a nice step in the right direction. Brava! See more images and Buzzfeed's interview with Pam Grossman, director of visual trends at Getty Images.
Also, this is happening! The federal government will soon treat married same-sex couples the same as heterosexual couples when they file for bankruptcy, testify in court or visit family in prison. -NY Times
June Jordan, Alice Walker, Lucille Clifton, and Audre Lorde at the 1979 Phyllis Wheatley Poetry Festival. Beautiful.
On Michael Sam being seen as a pick who could bring "drama" Yes! John Stewart gets it right! (as always)
Via Everyday Feminism: 1. Recognize and Analyze Power Dynamics 2. Treat Everyone with Respect 3. Make Sure Marginalized Voices Are Represented 4. Encourage Students to Analyze New Perspectives 5. Lead by Example A Feminist classroom doesn’t have to look like a place where posters representing intersectionality are hung up next to “Smash the Patriarchy!” banners, where you spend more time analyzing the slut-shaming in The Scarlet Letter than the symbolism, where you refuse to use bio textbooks that subscribe to essentialist language – although it can. A feminist classroom is simply a place where our values concerning equality, respect, and representation are apparent. And when we put forth effort to create a healthy environment like that, we cultivate feminism.
