I'm sharing the trailer of 'Bare Voice', a film I've been working on since April 2024. It’s directed by my friend Jaideep Varma, who won the National Award for 'Leaving Home', the seminal rock documentary on Indian Ocean. It explores the chequered life and work of celebrated singer-songwriter Kabir Suman, a fiercely debated figure, and poses the question "is he the world's greatest unsung maker of songs?"

For me, this film is also a journey back to 90s Calcutta, a time and place that lives fondly in my memory, underscored by Suman's profound and unforgettable tunes. Even though I disagree with his politics, I can't help but love him for how much he loves music.

My path as a songwriter has had its share of bumps, but it has gifted me connections I never could have imagined. I feel incredibly fortunate that one of those paths led me to Bob Weir. Over this past year, we stayed in touch, and what struck me most wasn't his legendary status, but his profound humanity.

He’d take the time to chat with me even while he was busy on the road, listening to my album Cutting Loose and even asking for the lyrics. He was kind enough to offer a simple 'nice work' and singled out the guitar solo on the final track…a gesture that, coming from him, meant the world to me. I hope to carry his grace with me just as much as his music.

Back in school, an article in The Telegraph titled Nondon's 9 caught my attention. As the name suggests, it featured Nondon Bagchi’s nine favourite items from Calcutta’s food menu. His compelling description of the mishti doi from Jadab Dass inspired me to try all the places he endorsed. That marked my induction into the incredible gastronomic world of Calcutta’s amazing food. I became a fan of Nondon’s food column first, and much later, of his musical work with the seminal rock band High and his heartfelt cover of Jackson Browne’s Rosie. A decade and a half later, here’s Nondon (who hates winter) and me, enjoying a generous serving of cold chinipata mishti doi from Jadab. As he described in his article: “pure white in colour, a slight tang, and so light and tasteful at the same time that I can put away 700g without batting an eyelid".
