Gauging his reaction, it was clear to Lily that James hadn’t been expecting her to agree with his untimely date but what was the harm in going? He was a little less annoying than usual and she could be dead soon so, why not explore the world of James Potter? “Yeah, that sounds fun,” she replied. “Well, more like a shopping spree than a date but I’ll trust you to keep me entertained long enough not to hex you.” Lily couldn’t help but playfully smirk at him. “When is this date going to take place? Now?”

“I was thinking more like tonight, actually.” James was still in a state of shock that Lily had agreed to go out with him, more so now that she was actually talking to him about their forthcoming date. “This can be a nice little pre-date walk, if you like. I’ll get you a deal on some ingredients then I can go home and make myself all pretty for you.” He shot her a smile. “I could come and get you at about, say, seven?”

“Oh well in that case, how could I insult one of your few attributes,” he said sarcastically.  Despite his tone an amused smile stayed on his face as he rolled his eyes. “We wouldn’t want to put a dent in your oh so fragile self esteem.”

“You wound me, Padfoot.” James grinned playfully towards his best friend, before then walking closer to him and swinging his arm around his shoulders. “Be nicer to your friends.”

Alastor shrugged not wanting to admit he felt a tad guilty for throwing his cigarette on the floor. “Celebration?” he offered questioningly. Of course, Alastor could lie to everyone but his dear and close friends. “I’ll pick the spot. Since I’m paying.”

James wasn’t silly; he cocked his head to the side when Alastor mentioned something about celebrating, and he let out a soft sigh. “What do we have to celebrate then?” He questioned, hoping that he actually had something good to tell him instead of nothing. “Sure, where are you fancying?”

Lily stood her ground. Her eyes narrowed as she looked up at James, waiting to hear what he would offer. “What?” she retorted. It wasn’t the first time he’d asked her out; there had been attempts at Hogwarts all of which Lily had brushed off. “A date? Now? During all of this Hell we’re experiencing?” Not giving him chance to reply, she added almost in the same breath as her previous words, “Okay.”

Well fuck, had that actually just happened? Had Lily Evans just agreed to go out on a date with him, toerag James Potter that she hated? Without even realising, James felt a huge smile over take his lips and he just gave her a short nod, not wanting to ruin the moment by making some idiotic sort of comment to make her change his mind. “Let’s go down to Knockturn Alley, but to go and see Madame Xena -- she was a friend of my grandmother’s apparently, and has some oddities in her shop that may be of use to you.”

“I can’t. I promised I wouldn’t buy another pack, and while it’s only semantics that cover me if I get caught taking hits of yours, I feel it’s better to have some protection rather than none.” Mary moved to sit on the arm of a nearby chair, arms coming to cross over her chest. “Do you want a horn and a drum roll as well, or is my humble admiration enough?”

“Still hiding your habits then?” James questioned, raising his eyebrow up at the blonde standing opposite him. He was a big fan of living life to the fullest, being you and no-one else and not hiding anything so that did bug him a little, but he wasn’t going to make her do anything that she didn’t want to. “I think there should be a fanfare wherever I go, to be honest, but for now I’ll just accept your love and adoration.”

Suppose had Remus been just a tad more awake, he would’ve known it was James. Or, perhaps, the years since graduation had taken them further apart from each other than he previously thought. “I don’t really get to do that anymore, James.” His reply came with exasperation. James knew this. If Remus wasn’t on a mission for the Order, which was frequent in itself, he was in the safe house, a wanted man. He didn’t run off to go get drunk in the streets of London anymore, it was too dangerous. If they were going to do it, they had to go somewhere no one would think to find them. “You’re not gonna give me a choice, are you?”

“You don’t get to go out?” James scoffed, and he grabbed his friend’s scarf off of the hook nearest the door and tossed them in his general direction. “I’m wanted just like you are, and you don’t see me holing myself up and waiting for the worst to happen.” Plastering a bright grin onto his face, the man pulled the door open fully once more, gesturing for Remus to walk out. “Nope, not a bloody chance. Get moving.”

Rolling her eyes, Lily sighed at his reply. If she admitted to anything, she needed to admit it to herself first and Lily still wasn’t there yet. The more time she spent around James the more tolerant she seemed to become. “And, what do you want from me, Potter?” she asked in replied, a brow rising curiously. 

“From you, Evans,” James took a small step closer to her, his grin on his face never faltering as he caught her gaze, “I’d like to take you out for dinner. I’d like to take you out on an actual date with food and a couple of candles, maybe even some fancy wine -- whaddya’ say?”

Barty had spotted Potter of all people, and he was staring at himself. That was well..interesting.  “Are you sure the mirror is showing you yourself?”  He sighed, taking a deep breath and looked at him.  “Are you really actually that fascinated with yourself?” 

“Well it’s definitely not showing me you, and no-one else is around.” James quipped back instantly - no malice was meant by his words, but sometimes he was just unable to stop himself from being mean. “If you had looks like mine, you’d be the same.”

“And it has clearly ruined your sense of humour,” Sirius sighed with a shake of his head. “Don’t worry, just stick with me long enough and I’m sure you’ll remember how to be funny. I am incredibly funny.”

“Hey, my sense of humour is completely in tact, Padfoot. Don’t be mocking my ability to be funny; that and my good looks, irresistible charm, smooth talking and strength of Atlas are all I have left.” He smirked playfully.

tilden coudn’t help the laugh that escaped him when the idea of drinking caught his attention. “sounds great. let’s go!” tilden could’ve ran to the destination, a little impatient to start drinking. 

It wouldn’t take the two of them long to get the the Leaky Cauldron, they were only a few streets away. “What’s going to be your choice of poison today? I think I’m quite fancying a beer.”

“Yes, you.” Marlene’s eyes rolled out of forced habit unable to stop the action, “Please, I trust you and your intentions to my firewhiskey about as far as I can throw you.” But either way the strong face she’d been wearing softened as she nodded her head. “Come on then, let’s find a table and you can tell me about all the trouble you’ve been getting into.”

“Well that’s just rude.” James laughed, passing the bottle back in her direction. “Honestly Marls, this war has changed you, and not for the better, you know.” Without questioning, James followed the girl over to the nearest table and signalled for the bartender to bring them over two glasses that they could drink the whiskey from. “I’m hurt you think I get into trouble, you know. I’m doing rather well recently, only minimal scarring.”

Mary reached up and plucked the cigarette from between James’ lips, her shaking. “You really shouldn’t be smoking these,” she chastised, looking both ways as she tapped the end with her finger, then taking a brief hit. “Pretty sure they’re bad for your health.” She smiled as she exhaled, mouthing thank you in his direction as she handed the cigarette back. The last thing she needed was one of the girls seeing her smoking again. “But, then again, the lack of oxygen in your brain could be the reason you have so much room for all of that ego.”

“And you,” James grinned as he took the cigarette back into his fingers, popping it between his lips once again, “should buy your own.” He shot her a cheeky smile, honestly not minding the fact that she had taken it for a hit. “Whatever is causing it, it’s working for me, Mare. My ego is a huge part of my lovable personality.”

Merlin, he was annoying. “If I’ve ever stared it’s simply out of disbelief for how shallow you are,” she coined, a slight smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth. “Would you know where I could find some rare potion ingredients? A location without hundreds of Dark wizards camping outside?”

“You’ll admit it sooner or later.” James shrugged, his grin still plastered over his face. It was almost as if he hadn’t even heard her words, and had just focused on the point that she had been looking at him. “Potion ingredients?” He repeated, before then nodding. “I might, but I may want something in return, Evans.”

Remus let out a yell of surprise as his door banged open. He was seated with his wand in his hand before he realized it was James. “Christ alive, Prongs. I could’ve killed you.” He flopped back onto his bed and tossed his wand on the nightstand before throwing off the sheets and forcing himself to his feet. Headed for the wardrobe, he said, “The only thing I can smell is the ghastly amount of cologne you’re sporting. Must be a bird within a hundred feet or something.”

“Nah, you wouldn’t have.” James shrugged, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning against the door frame of his friend’s room. “You knew it was me, I have nothing to fear.” He truly felt that way too; he was certain that none of them could sneak up on the other, not after years and years of trying. “I’d rather smell like a perfume shop than a hermit.” He gestured around the room. “When was the last time you actually went out to have a bit of fun?”

“Moony!” James flung the door open to the room that Remus had in the headquarters for the Order, his arms held out to the side in a grand gesture. “Get up, get dressed into something half decent, and comb your hair -- we’re going drinking as I haven’t seen you in days and it smells like something died in here.”
