1. My understanding of working to a brief is to produce work according to a strict set of guidelines or rules. 2. Our original idea was to produce a spoof of the old cold war duck and cover video’s in which a narrator would discuss the threat of nuclear fallout and what to do in that situation. We would've obviously replaced the nuclear fallout aspect with technicolour yawn. However after deliberation we decided against that idea as we believed it would be to time consuming and we were over complicating our situation. We decided to do a simple step by step how to video with nice shots and a simple voice over explaining the steps. We would use fraps software to screen grab.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Title Sequence
• What takes place in the sequence? Describe the content. • Can you suggest why it has been designed the way it has? What do you think it represents? • If the production has a soundtrack, tell us if what it sounds like, and how does it relate to the visual content? • What does the title logo look like and is it suitable? • What do you think of it, and why? • How does it represent the main film? The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo title sequence is very dark and gruesome. It starts with a viscid black ooze which i can only relate to oil streaming into crevices, dribbling into lips, eyes, ears and anywhere it can possibly reach. It seamlessly forms shapes then transforms itself, sensually sloshing and penetrating all matter. Arms reach out of the ooze only to be torn apart. A elegant Phoenix "esque" creature is engulfed then set ablaze. I would describe this title sequence with words like; wicked, enthralling and sensual.
"Let’s use black ooze as a unifying element throughout the vignettes. Everyone’s had a bad dream where they are caught in some molasses-like substance and not able to move. It just fit." This is a quotation from creative director Tim Miller. I agree with the point he made about it representing a bad dream. I believe it is in fitting with the actual film as it contains and identifies the key themes of film as it contains a strong sexual undercurrent, technology and a woman struggling and trudging through a traumatic experience representing her life (the girl with the dragon tattoo).
The soundtrack is key to the title sequence and a premise on which the action revolves. The beat drives and controls the black ooze and the female howling the lyrics adds to the sensation of despair and allowing the ooze to control. The song is performed by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Karen O’s. It is there take on Zeppelin's Immigrant song.
The logo is simply the title of the movie. However it is a very complex design, i can tell that they haven't just used one font because there are different variations on each letter. the type face is sharp and edgy which encompasses the attitude of the movie.
Overall the sequence is incredibly engrossing and puts you in the correct mind set for the rest of the movie. It is incredibly well made and the actual titles are included well into the action. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Artofthetitle.com (2012) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. [online] Available at: http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/the-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo/ [Accessed: 12 Feb 2013]

A Game Of Thrones Title Sequence
The Game Of Thrones title sequence is a long one. It starts with a fiery astrolabe orbiting high above a foreign world. The camera then pans off of the astrolabe and dollys towards the intricate map (that slightly resembles a risk board) that spans the entire shot. The cities mechanically grow out of the ground driven by cogs and gears. The camera closes in on a city labeled "Kings Landing". The camera throughout the sequence travels to each different city individually taking the viewer on a tour of the world. Each city growing from it's terrain via mechanical mechanisms. I believe that it was designed this way because it makes clear to the viewer who isn't familiar with the format of the Game Of Thrones have a certain clairvoyance on what they are about to see and that it is set in a different world. This quotation proves my point, "We discussed a concern which is that [Game of Thrones] doesn’t take place on the Earth that we know. It takes place in a world that exists only in the books. So similar to how the legend or map at the front of fantasy book works, she felt like there was a need for a map to the show." The soundtrack is performed by an orchestra, the most pronounced instrument is the cello that performs the constant riff that the piece revolves around. The percussion also is profound. The drums i believe represent a "marching to war feel". Getting an orchestra to perform the soundtrack supports the mechanical proficiency feel of the sequence. The logo is set where the houses representative animals meet on the astrolabe thus keeping the theme from the program itself. The title Game Of Thrones is etched onto the astrolabe. The sun peers through the etchings and the text glows by the suns light. It is very epic and medieval thus fitting the narrative. The title sequence is incredibly impressive with the complex set design and the transitions between areas of the map. However as an avid fan of the series, I believe it is too long. It changes slightly each episode however it can get dull watching almost the same title sequence each episode for almost two minutes! Artofthetitle.com (2011) Game of Thrones. Itunes U Final Evaluation
Our final presentation didn't turn out as expected. It showed a lot of promise however it didn't turn out as good as expected due to extraneous factors such as absence of group members, loss of work and general miscommunication. The original footage and audio we obtained was of a good quality. However we stumbled into a false sense of security thus allowing time to slip through our fingers and the project to fall into the hands of complacency. The premiere project was not exported correctly leaving the video grainy and of a lower quality. In our peer feedback evaluation we were issued a 8/10 for our project. This was an extremely generous in my eyes as i believe we only deserved a 6. We were awarded such a high score because" no nonsence approach to teaching the audience exactly what they need to know to make a technicolour yawn" and “Informative, and told us everything we needed to know in order for us to make a technicolour yawn after watching.” However they also described Sam's part of the voice over as "monotonous”. To improve we should've stabilised some of our shots and exported correctly.
Title Sequence Inspiration
These are the type of shots I was inspired by when creating my title sequence. I was trying to portray a world ravaged by urban decay after an apocalyptic event.

Camera - 2x600D We will use these camera’s because they are really easy and simple to use and also we have a range of different lenses and settings to create the old fashion look we are trying to achieve. For example we can shut the aperture right down so that the iris is really small. This will give a larger debt of field which will create a old film look after we have put it in black and white Screen Recorder - Fraps Fraps is a computer program that will record whatever i am using on my screen. We will use this so give examples of what to do over the narration. Camera stabilisers - Tripod and Fig Rig The tripod will be mainly used so that we can have slow old fashioned pans and also so that we can make the film look very simple and clean to avoid any confusions for the viewed when they are trying to lean about “Technicolour Yawn” The fig rig will be used in any moving shots to maximise the stability and the maintain the simple clean look we are trying to create. Editing - Flash Player/final cut We will use flash to create the Technicolor yawn effect and also for the tutorial. Then we will edit the whole film together on final cut pro. Lighting Equipment - Led Film Lights The lighting will be used to help us create our old fashioned look that we are trying to achieve. We will also use the lighting to make the film look studio like because that is what it will be.

Camera - 600D This is the camera that we have chosen to use for our title sequence because it has lots of functions to help us make our title sequence look more professional and effective. For example this camera has the capability to use different lenses with it so we can use a very wide lens to create feeling of emptiness and the end of everything because if the shot is wide and still the is no movement than it makes you believe more that there is no movement because it is as if there camera is showing everything. Lens - 16-35 canon Glide Track We will use a glide track for most of our shots because we don’t want to have much movement because it is meant to be the end of everything and lots of movement would create the sense that there is still living/moving things there. We still want some movement to the shots to make it look more interesting so we thought we would use a glide track to do a slow smooth dolly shot and because the movement will be so slow and smooth we though that it would create the idea of there still being living moving things. Lights - LED light We will need some sort of artificial lighting because inside the building it will be to dark to shoot with just natural lighting. We will try to keep the artificial lighting low because we want it to look as natural as possible.
My Least Favourite Ident
Bad Robot is the production company founded by JJ Abrams. I have chosen Bad Robot's ident as my least favourite. The ident is entirely animated. It consists of a stationary lower layer of black grass, the background seems to be a strange layer of grey fog lasily circling. The perspective doesn't change throughout. A shadow appears in the shape of a toy robot in a side profile. It darts from the right side of the screen to the left and suddenly appears in the centre of the shot. This is accompanied by an extremely annoying voiceover by a young child from the US, since when has whining been appealing? It is poorly made and i couldn't help but think that I could've made something very similar in a day.
The ident also uses really dark drab colours. The shadowy silhouettey shape of the robot is a shade of black which i believe is supposed to represent the mysterious thriller or sci-fi genres which most of their productions are eg. Lost, Fringe Star Trek etc. "well known for his work in the genres of action, drama, and science fiction" (online). Although the fog of my hatred is dense I can still realise that the ident provides the viewer with a clear impression on the colour of the production. It is my least favorite ident because the it is drab and dreary. The colours are dull and the audio is irritating. En.wikipedia.org (2010) J. J. Abrams - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
