Iām glad to see interracial relationships that arenāt just black and white couples. That first one made my heart flutter with glee.Ā

not 2 be controversial on main but i think itās pretty sad the first major generation to grow up online is projecting their adolescent self-hatred onto the ācringeā generation of tiktokkers
did zillennials seriously spend their youth making OC fanart on devart and livejournal and being toldĀ āoh look, they finally emergeā by their parents whenever they risked leaving their room only to turn around 10 years later and sayĀ āewwwh you spent hours cosplaying an OC & learning a viral dance in your bedroom? fuckin cringeā
likeā¦.. did we truly lose sight so quickly of how it was to feel young and disconnected and desperate for someone, anyone, to really listen to you? to feel close to you? how quickly have we become jaded to the joys of carefully, earnestly crafting something alone in a dark bedroom and sharing it with the world, hoping for just one other person to say āthatās how i feel, tooā? how much must we hate our younger selves in order to blame the teenagers of the world for creating costumes and dances and dreams for themselves???
How many of us got dressed up to take a photo in the bathroom mirror and post it on MySpace? How many of us created art of our wild looking OCs with superpowers and absurd backstories and posted it on DeviantArt? How many of us created home-made movies with friends and posted it on YouTube? Bonus points if it had a bunch of bloopers at the end because you kept getting the lines wrong and couldnāt stop laughing. How many of us created animations/games on Newgrounds? Roleplayed on forums? Wrote fan fictions? Made AMVs?????
Come on⦠We were basically the first online creatives, the pioneers of internet DIY! Instead of feeling embarrassed by your past, why not accept it for what it was? Hell, why not feel proud of it? Despite how embarrassing it might be to you now, you had fun with it back then. You might have even experienced a piece of internet history that people can no longer experience today. (Did you know Flash is gonna retire soon? Say goodbye to all those games you grew up with!) Embrace your past. Share your stories, laugh at your past self, appreciate how far youāve come. Let the memories make you feel all warm and cozy with nostalgia instead of bitter and grumpy with shame.
Itās not inherently wrong to think something is bad or ācringyā or unintentionally funny. Everyone has opinions. But youāre an adult. You donāt need to bully or make fun of random kids for having harmless fun on the internet, for doing the same thing you did as a kid. If you really need to share your opinion, be respectful. Give advice and constructive criticism. Relate back to your own experiences and share what youāve learned. Pass your knowledge on to the next generation of young internet creatives.
Let kids cosplay/dance on TikTok, create music on SoundCloud, make fan edits on Twitter, etc. If they grow up to look back at it and cringe, so be it. At least they got to explore their creativity, experience an interesting era of internet culture, maybe learn something from it, and have fun. If you were born later youād probably be doing the same thing as them. Feeling ashamed of your past and projecting that shame onto others just doesnāt do good for anyone involved.
Spread this far and wide, my pretties.Ā
