ORIENTAL IN NATURE (An Exclusive Interview with Jamie Lou Borile)
I first met Jamie back in 2014, during a sponsored trip to Camarines Sur for a summer event of Havaianas Philippines. Jamie is a 22-year old BSBA Marketing Management graduate from Ateneo de Naga University. She’s a Bicol-based style blogger (http://www.spotlightonjamie.com/) and most of her entries focuses mainly on her social & personal trips, lifestyle, style and fashion blogging. Now that she’s based in Saitama, Japan, RadarPH tries to keep up with one of the most kawaii bloggers we know, and follow her most recent adventures.
When did your knack for styling and dressing up started? Who influenced you?
It started at a very young age. Blame it all to my momma, who dressed me up like her doll ever since birth. And I guess my love for fashion and art was just carried out until now.
How often do you keep your readers/followers updated? You also have a blog right?
Yes, I do blog! But currently, adult life and responsibilities are kicking in and I really cannot find enough “me time” for blogging. And honestly, it’s kinda hard to keep up with a country where slow walking is unusual! So yeah, I’m just taking a little hiatus for a while until I get my rhythm on this new country that I’m living in. But don’t you worry, I’m never going to leave blogging!
Any future plans you have in mind about your love for fashion blogging?
With my love for photography and fashion, I am actually planning on documenting the Japanese street fashion every season. Living in a four seasoned country has been very interesting. It’s like having the chance to change your style four times a year. And also having the chance to see Japanese fashionistas’ different styles for each season which they showcase on a runway called streets. I also wanted to share that chance to my readers.
Moving on to another topic, you’re currently in Japan! How long have you been there?
I know! It’s surreal! I’ve been here a for little over six months.
What is the best thing about JAPAN?
Fast internet. Haha, just kidding! Of course, ART! They’re like EVERYWHERE. It’s like every corner of Japan is camera-ready, that you’ll gonna wish you can bring your camera with you all the time, if it isn’t bulky!
In the span of time that you’ve been there, how will you define the difference between Japanese fashion among teens and those in their 20s to Filipinos?
Japanese fashion is bold. They don’t hold back when it comes to fashion. It’s like rules don’t exist when it comes to cuts and colors. What’s amazing is they always look put up even when their outfits are over-the-top or not proportionate. And this is what I also want to have in the Philippines. For all of us, fashionistas, to have confidence in every piece that we wear. To not hold back and be bounded by the rules, and to not be held back by what others might think about what we’re wearing.
Are you going back to the Philippines? I was hoping we could work on a shoot in your hometown! God, i miss Naga! :(
Yes, of course! Right now, there’s not schedule yet. But I’m so looking forward for that!
Who are your style inspirations, and what do you love most about their sense of style?
On the top of my list is Tricia Gosingtian! I love the way that her style is so out of the ordinary but still can fit in to the crowd. I always opt for that style. And also because the main inspiration of her style is Japanese fashion too.
Give us 5 weird things we don't know about you.
I’m right-handed in all things that I do, but when I eat, I’m left-handed.
I have the widest range of taste in music. From She&Him to Paramore. From Ed Sheeran to The Killers.
I can’t listen to music while talking to other people. I easily get distracted.
I’ve always wanted to be a male, because I think life would be much easier if you are.
I just learned how to ride a bike when I got here in Japan. And that’s like just 6 months ago, and I was 22 years old 6 months ago!
Hey! I got featured at the online blogazine, @radarph!
Let's talk about jealousy.
I strongly believe that jealousy could kill a person. Have you ever felt jealous? That weird painful feeling in your heart that you don't know what to do about, you just think that you have to do something about it. Jealousy is very dangerous especially to people who are not emotionally stable. It's either you hurt the person/s that made you jealous or you hurt yourself. That's how powerful jealousy is.
