Winter is the Season of the Crone, Vision, Slumber and Dreams as well as the season that welcomes in The Child of Wonder. In every winter tale there is a death followed by a birth. Earth Wisdom for all time found in many guises and traditions. This morning I’m burning some incense that honors that deep truth. Mugwort for dreams, a special blend of incense called Crone I purchased a few years ago, cedar for its evergreen qualities and Frankincense to honor the Divine Christ Child of my own tradition. Greeting the sunrise with a sketch. As the days grow short and the brief daylight hours precious I am compelled to capture the sun’s rising and setting. Watching and honoring him a daily journey across the heavens and as He dips low toward the horizon the ancient fear rises. What if this time the darkness stays and the sun does not return? The Shaman in me feels a deep need to call the sun back by sacred marks on a page. As winter sets in my creative routine shifts into early morning sketches of the view through my studio windows. A plume of smoke rises from the chimney of a neighboring house. I'm loving these basically monochrome sketches. This one relies heavily on the black of the ink for both line and value and I held the colors down to Pouzzoli Red, Hematite Violet and Maya Blue, keeping the Pouzzoli Red the dominant color and using the other two to make small modifications of hue and temperature. #watercolorsketch #watercolorjournal #brushpen
