chapter eleven
It’s easy to fall back into routine at Hogwarts.
While the increased proximity to James makes it difficult to screw her head back on straight, it helps to have something else to focus on. She'd been so miserable in Cokeworth that, aside from arguing with her mum, sister, and Vernon, she feels like all she did was think about James or write letters to him.
Classes start on the Monday immediately after they return, and Lily commits herself to focusing.
Her plan is derailed almost immediately when James and his mates sit down beside her and Mary at breakfast.

She's so underrated and mischaracterised it hurts.

any dating jily headcanons? loving touch and go so far!!
SO MANY
i mentioned it yesterday but i don't really think jily were that publicly affectionate! i think their friends are too important to them and so they kept it to hand-holding and arms around shoulders and the occasional accidental eye-fuck (which sirius called them out on every time of course). they were all over each other behind closed doors and maybe got caught in compromising positions a few times by their mates but i don't see them as being into the voyeuristic stuff i see a lot in the fandom
when either of them gets good news, they don't tell anyone until they've told each other
they play games with each other all the time! never a dull moment. they have a tonne of people watching games that they created between the two of them. they try explaining them to others but no one else manages to catch on to their weird bits so james and lily just play them with each other. they rate people's outfits, make up back stories for strangers, etc.
they remained just as competitive within academic settings! anyone suggesting that they wouldn't remain loyal to outdoing each other or that either of them was 'going easy' on the other as the height of insult to them. sometimes the competition got bad enough to where they couldn't revise together
they sleep over basically every night from pretty much the beginning of their relationship. it's not even about sex... they'd just rather be together than apart and since, as mentioned above, jily are mostly respectful to others... the lads don't mind her being there and so that's just sort of the arrangement
related (and eventually relevant to touch and go)... james falls asleep first. every single time. doesn't matter where they are or what they're doing. lily has hundreds of memories of him talking confidently about something and then simply passing out halfway through a sentence.
they are both horrible when the other is ill. james hovers and fusses and dramatically acts as though lily has one foot in the grave because she has a cold... which pisses lily off. meanwhile, lily thinks james is a whiny baby and gets so annoyed with his complaining when he is ill. they both laughed out loud during the "in sickness and in health" part of their vows
they are both incredibly nosy. one of the reasons they work so well is that neither of them gets annoyed by being interrogated. a conversation between them is basically just two people asking increasingly invasive questions because they're genuinely interested in each other's answers. but when one of them has gossip to share... mutual exuberance!!!
james never actually stops showing off for lily. the difference is that once they're together, he's no longer trying to impress her. he's just trying to make her laugh. it basically becomes his life mission.
james is surprisingly good at remembering tiny details about people and lily absolutely takes advantage of this. this allows them to be a great head girl and head boy and they're pretty universally beloved
james is one of the only people who can get lily to complain about things. she usually keeps it under wraps, but james knows exactly when to needle her enough to draw out a needed vent session

chapter ten
The platform is never busier than the return trip to Hogwarts.
Lily has never quite understood why. There are technically fewer students than there are in September, but everything always feels more frantic. Everyone arrives later than they should, parents are shouting, trunks are rattling across the platform. Perhaps people are still hungover from the new year, but everyone always seems to arrive at exactly the same time. Late.
Lily, however, has already been here for nearly three hours.
Petunia and Vernon had plans in London and dropping her off early had been "most convenient." So she'd spent the better part of the morning freezing cold, sitting on a bench with her trunk, watching the platform gradually fill around her.
Now that the train has arrived and boarding has begun, she decides she might as well find a compartment before the crowds descend.
She bends to grab her trunk.
“Evans!”
Her grip slips and the trunk lands back on the platform with a dull thump.
She looks up.
James is weaving through the crowd toward her, grinning.
