和語 vs 漢語

This list was sitting in my drafts for quite a while and I think it’s time to let it go. So below is a list with curious pairs of words and expressions that use the same kanji, but one of a pair is 和語「わご」 native Japanese word using kun-readings, and the other one is 漢語「かんご」Sino-Japanese word using on-readings. Most of them are synonyms of sorts.

生き物 「いきもの」 living thing, animal 生物 「セイブツ」 living thing, creature

食べ物 「たべもの」 food 食物 「ショクモツ」 food, foodstuff

山登り  「やまのぼり」 mountain climbing 登山 「トザン」 mountain climbing

入手 「ニュウシュ」  coming to hand, obtaining, acquisition 手に入る 「てにはいる」 to obtain, to get your hands on something

流行る 「はやる」 to be popular, to spread widely (about disease) 流行 「リュウコウ」 fashion, craze, prevalence (of a decease)

流れ星 「ながれぼし」 shooting star, meteor 流星 「リュウセイ」 meteor, falling star

骨折り 「ほねおり」 great pains​, efforts 骨折 「コッセツ」 bone fracture

すべて (Subete) - All, entire(ly)

の (No) - Particle to connect nouns / make one noun modify another

医者 (Isha) - Medical doctor

が (Ga) - Subject marker

多額 (Tagaku) - Large amount (esp. of money)

の (No) -  Particle to connect nouns / make one noun modify another

金 (Kane) - Money

を (O) - Direct object marker

稼ぐ (Kasegu) - To earn (income)

わけ (Wake) - Some conclusion reached through logic (see below)

じゃありません (Ja arimasen) - Polite negative copula in spoken speech (contracted form of ではありません, de wa arimasen)

自分 (Jibun) - Oneself

に (Ni) - Indirect object particle

自信 (Jishin) - Self-confidence

を (O) - Direct object particle

持てる (Moteru) - Potential (able to) form of 持つ (to hold; verb used with 自信 to mean “to have” confidence)

よう (You) - Particle used to connect (potential) verbs to なる (i.e., “become able to do ~”)

に (Ni) - Indirect object particle, used for indicating what something is becoming/changing into

なりたい (Naritai) - -tai (want to) form of なる (naru, to become)

です (Desu) - Polite present copula

と-conditional

We talked about the たら-conditional in the last post, now lets talk about the と-conditional

と-conditional uses plain non-past form of verbs, adjectives, and the copula です.  

Here’s the formula: “plain non-past form of verbs/ adj./ copula + です”

と-conditional often used when describing a natural sequence of events/ the natural consequence of an act or action. 

i.e: “When Summer comes, it becomes warm.” 

1.) 九月になると台風が来ます。(kugatsu ni naru to taifuu ga kimasu) -> When September comes, typhoons come. 

2.) 日本へ行くと、いつも歌舞伎を見ます。(nihon e iku to, itsumo kabuki o mimasu) -> When I go to Japan, I always see Kabuki. 

*When the main clause is past tense it describes an unexpected event.* 

3.) 郵便局へ行くと、斎藤さんがいました。(yuubinkyoku e iku to, saitou san ga imashita) -> When I went to the post office Mr./Ms. Saitou was there. 

4.) まっすぐ行くと、銀行があります。(massugu iku to, ginkou ga arimasu) -> If you go straight there is a bank. 

5.)交差点を渡ると、映画館があります。(kousaten o wataru to, eigakan ga arimasu) -> If you cross the intersection there is a movie theater.

*と-conditional is used often when giving directions, like the above examples. It is important to remember, however, that it can only be used once when giving directions.* 

6.) この道をまっすぐ行って、一つ目の角を左に曲がって、しばらく行くと、右側に銀行があります。(kono michi o massugu itte, hitotsume no kado o hidari ni magatte, shibaraku iku to, migi gawa ni ginkou ga arimasu) -> Go straight on this street, and turn left at the first corner, if you go straight for a while there will be a bank on the left side.
