Hazelnuts and Dark Roasts

After learning of Lucanis’ feelings for her, Luka attempts to understand why he cares for her.

Pressing her hand against the wooden door, Luka slowly made her way inside the kitchen, intent on finding Lucanis. A few days had passed since their encounter with Illario, so she hoped that now was as good as any a time to talk.

She didn’t have to look long, for the man in question was standing at the counter, working on something she couldn’t see at her angle.

Hearing the door’s squeaky hinges, Lucanis glanced over his shoulder to see Luka. A weary smile instantly graced his lips and he turned to face her.

“You always seem to have impeccable timing.”

Luka raised a brow. “I’m not sure I know what you mean.”

He shook his head and chuckled. “And ever so modest. It’s no wonder everyone here adores you.”

She paused at that, taken aback.

Sure, she and the rest of the Veilguard were friends, but adoration? That seemed like a stretch.

Her thoughts wandered to the day Spite had pulled her into Lucanis’ mind. Of the things his subconscious revealed to her.

“That’s…sort of what I wanted to talk to you about.”

He inclined his head in her direction, his attention on her fully.

Luka leaned against the table, her fingers drumming absently against the surface.

“Back when Spite and I were in your head…I…learned how you felt about me. And…I have to admit I’m confused.”

When she glanced up at Lucanis, his expression was one of shock and concern. He stared at her for several moment before he began to speak.

“What part confuses you?”

She let out a sigh and returned her gaze to the table. “All of it? I just…” She paused. “I just don’t know what you see in me. I’m brash, I hold people at arm’s length…I ruin everything I touch. And yet…you see me as something precious. Something worth holding onto.”

Gathering her courage, she forced herself to meet Lucanis’ gaze. “I don’t understand. You could choose anyone in the world, and yet you somehow think you’re unworthy of me.”

Lucanis’ brows were twisted into a knot, his concern bleeding into his body language. He opened his mouth as if to speak, before promptly shutting it. Instead of saying anything, he turned around and grabbed the dish he’d been working on, setting it on the table.

“This is a hazelnut torte,” he explained. “It goes especially well with a dark roast.”

Her favorite drink. He’d remembered. Even though that chat had been so long ago.

“I suppose…this was my attempt to atone. For everything.” He kept his gaze fixed on the dessert, not daring to look her in the eyes. “I am inexperienced in matters of the heart, and am possessed by a demon. I never thought I would be able to satisfy you. To be worthy of you.”

“Why are you saying it like that?” Luka asked, her expression contorted in pain. “I’m not special.”

“But you are.”

Slowly, Lucanis slid his hand across the table until it settled atop the back of Luka’s hand.

She flinched at the contact but didn’t withdraw from his touch.

He stepped around the table, approaching her while still holding her hand delicately. Gradually, he bent to his knee and pressed a soft kiss to her knuckles.

“You may not realize it, but you are a remarkable person, Luka. You are so strong and so beautiful. You lead with compassion, yet are resolute in your decisions. For one so small, you command a mighty presence.”

Luka began to shake, unable to comprehend his compliments.

Why was he being so kind? Didn’t he realize how vile of a person she was?

But he didn’t relent. “When I first met you, I thought you were a goddess given flesh. My own glorious rescuer come to save me from my nightmare.” He gently rubbed his thumb against her hand, a warm smile on his face.

“I care for you a great deal, Luka. I have been terrible at showing it, but you need to know just how adored you truly are.”

Tears pricked her eyes and she furiously wiped at her face with her free hand.

Her breathing grew jagged as she tried to suppress her crying. Meanwhile, Lucanis waited patiently for her to process what he was saying.

She couldn’t comprehend it. It was so much to just try to accept. It went against everything she thought about herself.

Hiccuping slightly, she turned her gaze to the side, avoiding making eye contact. “I’ve been on my own for so long. Even among the Lords, I felt like an outsider. No one ever reached out to me, and I was fine with that.” She sniffed slightly. “Or at least, I thought I was…”

He continued to gaze at her with gentle understanding, waiting for her to say her piece.

“I’ve been with my fair share of bedmates, but that’s all it ever was. Sex. No one ever cared enough to stick around for more.” Gathering her courage, she managed to meet Lucanis’ eyes. “So when you say that I’m something special, something good…How can I possibly accept that?”

Slowly, Lucanis gave her a tender smile, his expression hopeful. “Do you trust me?”

Luka blinked, taken aback by his question. But it wasn’t long before she responded, “With my life.”

Lucanis gradually rose to his feet and gently tipped her chin upward so that their eyes met. “Then trust that what I’m saying is true. You are a wonderful person, Luka. More wonderful than you could ever imagine.”

He leaned down and planted a kiss on her cheek, softly brushing her tears from her eyes with the pads of his thumbs.

A sharp exhale escaped her lips and she glanced up at him with a mixture of shock and hope.

Before he could stand to his full height, she hooked her arms around his neck and pulled him down to her, locking her mouth with his.

He let out a small sound of surprise, but within moments, he was wrapping his arms around her and angling his head to deepen the kiss.

They remained entwined for as long as they could, until they inevitably had to break for air.

When they parted, Luka couldn’t help but chuckle.

Gently trailing his hand down the side of her face, Lucanis smiled and asked, “What’s so funny?”

She just shook her head before saying, “Maybe it’s just the hormones talking, but somehow or other, I’m tempted to believe you.”

“Oh?”

Her eyes crinkled with mirth and she met his gaze with certainty. “It may take some time to fully convince me, but…I’m willing to give it a try.”

His smile deepened and he leaned down to give her another quick kiss. “I’ll be here by your side. You won’t have to be alone again. I promise.”

A giggle escaped her and she beamed at him, joy positively radiating from her.

“How about we try that dessert you made while it’s still warm? It looks delicious.”

Chuckling in turn, Lucanis released his hold on her. “Just wait ‘til you taste it.”

“Should I brew us some coffee?” she asked with a grin.

“You read my mind.”

Abomination

Spite asks Luka to help free Lucanis from his mind prison. There, she learns things that turn her world on its head.

When Spite told Luka that he needed help, the last thing she expected was to be pulled into Lucanis’ mind. As a dwarf, it was already unfamiliar enough whenever she spoke to Solas in “dreams.” She just kept getting involved in stranger and stranger occurrences.

She and Spite were in the Ossuary, though it differed somewhat. For one, there were no venatori to be found and the edges of the space seemed to fizzle away into nothingness. A muted grey washed across her vision, drowning everything in a muddled lack of color.

“LUCANIS IS HERE. ALWAYS,” Spite growled. “BEHIND LOCKED DOORS. I CAN’T BREAK THROUGH.”

Was Lucanis’ mind trapped here? If so, Luka would do what she could to free him. She might be frustrated with him, but he was still her friend.

Before long, the pair of them came across someone. It was Caterina.

“Rook…where is my grandson? You told me you would bring him back to me,” she said, distraught.

“I…did, though?” Luka asked.

“That is not my grandson,” she spat. “That is an abomination.”

Spite inhaled sharply. “TENDERNESS AND TERROR. RAGE AND RELIEF. OLD, STALE FEAR OF DISAPPOINTMENT.”

Luka’s eyes narrowed. “Is this some sort of spirit? Something that has Lucanis trapped?”

“NO,” Spite answered, “LUCANIS IS MINE. THEY WOULDN’T DARE. THOUGHTS LIVE HERE. IDEAS. FEELINGS.”

“So it’s his idea of Caterina…” Luka muttered.

Clearly, he worried what his grandmother would think of him now. She needed to convince her to let her pass.

“Demon or no, he’s still your family,” she told the First Talon. “He’s all you have left. That should be what matters.”

She gripped her cane and lowered her gaze. “My poor boy…” she murmured. “He must be suffering so much.”

“Let me pass,” Luka implored. “I can help him.”

Caterina blinked slowly before disappearing in a flash of light.

Sighing, she and Spite continued further in. Harsh whispers and voices echoed throughout the space, the words practically dripping down the walls. They seemed to be memories of his time in the prison.

Soon, they came upon Harding standing before a door.

“Don’t worry, Rook. I’ve got my eye on the prisoner.”

Luka frowned. “He’s not a prisoner, Harding. Not anymore.”

Lace shook her head in amusement. “Don’t you see, Rook? There’s no Lucanis anymore, if there ever was. All that’s left is the demon. You should be glad he’s trapped.”

Luka’s eyebrows drew together and her voice lowered. “You don’t really think that. The real Harding is kind and understanding. She’s moved past her initial trepidation and has come to care for Lucanis, just as we all have.

“You’re making a mistake,” Harding said quietly.

“Even so, it’s my choice to make,” Luka asserted. “Step aside.”

“Just…be careful,” the smaller dwarf said as she faded away.

Luka let out a heavy sigh. Did Lucanis really think so lowly of himself? That wasn’t the impression she’d gotten at all.

She glanced over at Spite before pressing forward.

They came upon Illario next. Luka balled her hands into fists. Fucking Illario. He was the reason Lucanis was in this mess in the first place. If it weren’t for him, he never would have been captured or tortured by Zara. If it weren’t for him, he wouldn’t be saddled with Spite.

“Rook,” he said in a voice smooth as butter, “You’re too good to be wasting your time in a place like this.”

Luka gave a wry chuckle. “If you think that, then you know nothing about me.”

There was nothing good about her. Nothing worthwhile.

Spite growled slightly. “SHARP. JAGGED EDGES. HURT WITH EVERY BREATH. GRIEF AND RELIEF. HOPE AND ANGER. MIXED.”

“Lucanis doesn’t owe you the time of day,” Luka spat.

“HE. PUT. US. HERE,” Spite bit out, voicing his agreement.

Illario leaned a bit closer. “You should save yourself while you can. If you don’t leave now, it will only cause more grief later.”

“Illario, you’re a fucking coward,” she growled. “Move your ass now before I make you move.”

He scoffed. “You have no idea what the consequences will be.” He then began to disappear from existence.

Luka wished she could make the real Illario pay for everything he’d done. She let out a deep breath before heading forward. Soon enough, she and Lucanis would have their revenge. She just needed to get him out of here first.

As they approached the next room, Spite said, “WE’RE CLOSE.”

Good. The sooner they could free Lucanis, the better.

When they reached the next door, however, Luka stopped in her tracks. Her jaw fell open and she took a half step back.

She was staring straight ahead at her own reflection.

What…what was she doing here?

Spite inhaled deeply before speaking. “STRANGENESS AND CHARM. SOMETHING FAMILIAR AND FOREIGN AT THE SAME TIME. WITH A LITTLE GUILT.”

Her reflection smiled at her and put her hand on her hip. “What are you doing here? You know Lucanis is a lost cause.”

Luka continued to gape at her mirror image before she pulled herself together. “That’s not true. He’s my friend and I’m going to free him.”

“Lying to yourself won’t do any good.” Her copy smirked. “Remember how he left us standing there, lost and uncertain? He wanted to kiss us but he chickened out. Because he’s a coward.”

“What?” she asked quietly.

What was she talking about?

“Even he knows we’re too good for him. He knows he could never offer anything of value. And he’s right.”

Luka stood there stock-still, trembling ever so slightly. Lucanis thought that? She’d been so sure he’d been stringing her along, playing hard to get, but the truth…the truth was he doubted his own self-worth. Doubted whether he was worthy of her.

“Besides,” the other Luka continued, “he’s possessed by a demon. We shouldn’t have to deal with that mess.”

“You’re wrong!” Luka shouted and the copy of her faltered. “Lucanis is more than his faults. He’s worth saving.”

“And what of the risks?” taunted the mirror. “Why would you endanger yourself for an abomination?”

Luka gave a sardonic laugh. “You know nothing about me if you think I’m scared of a little risk.”

Her copy gritted her teeth and yelled, “He’ll hurt you! Just like he did before!”

Luka marched right up to her duplicate and stared her down, nose to nose. “I. Don’t. Care.”

Sighing, the doppelganger closed her eyes. “It’s your funeral,” she said as she vanished in a flash of light.

Once her mirror image disappeared, Luka took a moment to calm herself. She could still hardly believe the things she’d heard. Why did Lucanis think so highly of her? She wasn’t anyone special. She wasn’t someone worth protecting. And yet Lucanis thought he didn’t deserve to be close to her. That he was no more than a liability.

Softly, she asked Spite, “Are we almost there?”

“CLOSE. VERY CLOSE.”

Shutting her eyes, she let out a deep sigh.

“Okay. Let’s go get him.”

When they finally found Lucanis, he turned toward them slowly and appeared confused. “Rook…what are you doing here?”

“I had to find you. To make sure you were okay.”

He frowned. “You should go. It’s better if I stay here than risk losing you.”

“YOU SEE?” Spite shouted, his lips curling into a snarl. “HE BREAKS. OUR AGREEMENT. HE WANTS. TO STAY HERE. SO HE KEEPS. ME HERE!”

“Mierda! Why would I want to stay here? Even in my head, this place is a nightmare!”

“Yes, but…it’s a nightmare you already defeated…” Luka said slowly. “I get it now. As bad as the Ossuary was, it was better than the alternative.”

“What alternative?” Lucanis snapped.

“The Ossuary, Zara…those problems you could solve with a blade. But healing again? Living as an abomination? There’s no simple answer there. And if you fail, you could hurt the ones you love.”

Luka paused for a moment. Was she really so conceited to believe Lucanis loved her? She had seen Harding here as well and she knew Lucanis didn’t harbor feelings for her…

It didn’t seem to matter. Her words appeared to have hit the nail on the head.

“No!” Lucanis shouted. “This is not…” He let out an angry growl. “Damn it, Rook!”

Spite tried to yell at Luka to make Lucanis leave, but she had to explain that it wasn’t that simple. That people can’t just change on a dime. The three of them continued to speak for a while, eventually coming to the agreement that Spite and Lucanis would forge an alliance. That they would work together to free Caterina.

In the end, Lucanis stepped into the space Spite occupied and Luka watched as their overlapping bodies eventually merged into one being.

Just as quickly as she had been pulled into the mindscape, Luka was thrust from it, forced to come to her senses.

Teia and Viago checked on the pair of them, explaining that they’d both spaced out for a few moments.

“You’re sure you’re all right?” Teia asked skeptically.

“We’re fine, Teia,” Lucanis assured her. “Don’t waste your worry on us.”

The other Crows seemed hesitant to let the issue go, but they didn’t say anything further.

As they left the restaurant, Luka hung back behind Lucanis. She stared at his back, her eyes locked on him.

She thought about asking him about what she saw in there, about the things the other her had said…

Later.

He had enough on his mind as it was. She could wait a little longer.

You're Really Here

Luka and Lucanis reunite after Luka's escape from the Fade prison. For the first time, Luka allows herself to feel vulnerable.

Luka entered her quarters, her energy all but drained. With a heavy sigh, she collapsed on her couch and shut her eyes.

She hadn’t even had time to process everything she went through in the Fade prison. Everything had been a whirlwind of chaos ever since she managed to escape. And now she had to go save the world. It was so much. How was she supposed to do this?

Her door opened then and she heard a familiar voice. “I cannot believe we found you.”

She peered up to see Lucanis entering her room. His expression was one of concern and she slowly sat up, preparing to address him properly.

“I’m a little surprised too, honestly,” she answered quietly.

He looked at her for a long, aching moment, his face crestfallen. “I thought I’d never see you again,” he uttered softly.

Luka glanced down, somberly staring into space. “I didn’t think I’d ever get out of there,” she admitted despite herself. “How do I know if I really did? This could be more of the Fade…”

Slowly, Lucanis approached her and knelt before her. He gently took her hands in his and murmured, “You’re here.” He stretched forward to capture her lips with his and she let out a soft sigh. “You’re really here,” he reiterated.

Something about the way he was looking at her made her feel uncharacteristically vulnerable. Somehow, she felt she could bare her feelings to him without fear of judgement.

“Promise?” she asked, her voice sounding small even to her.

His expression softened even further and he looked at her as though she were his whole world. “I swear.”

Lucanis gradually crawled forward, encroaching on her space and she easily allowed him in. He eased her back down onto the couch as he embraced her, his lips locking with hers tenderly. Spite’s wings enveloped the two of them protectively, keeping the pair safe and sheltered.

Small tears began to well in Luka’s eyes and she pulled Lucanis closer. She’d never been made to feel this way before…as though she were something precious, something worth protecting. She was so used to being strong and independent that she never allowed herself to feel so vulnerable. Though this was far from the first time she had shared her body with someone, it suddenly felt so new and unknown.

When Lucanis eased back to get a better look at her, he paused, noticing her tears. Gently, he cupped her cheek in his hand and asked, “Is something wrong? Please…I don’t want to make you uncomfortable.”

She just shook her head and pulled him in for a quick kiss. “You’re wonderful,” she breathed against his mouth. “Please…don’t stop.”

He hesitated for a moment before resuming. Carefully, he reached for the buttons of her shirt, slowly disrobing her. Lucanis gradually worked her clothes off of her body, exposing more and more of her dappled skin to him.

She took her time stripping him in turn, one article of clothing peeled off after another, tossed elsewhere for them to find later.

He trailed a heated path of kisses along her neck, down her sternum, his hands kneading her breasts along the way. Luka tossed her head back, a low moan falling from her lips as he bathed her in affection. He gradually made his way southward, his hands featherlight against her flesh. Slowly, he inserted a finger inside her heat, curling it ever so slightly.

“Lucanis…” she keened, her toes curling with pleasure.

He resumed kissing her, one hand cradling her neck while the other brought her closer and closer to the edge.

She let out loud sighs and moans as he fingered her, knowing she was nearing her limit. It didn’t take long before her walls began fluttering around his hand and she panted his name desperately.

A few moments passed as she came down from her high before she smiled at him and pulled him in for another kiss.

“Do you want to be inside?” she murmured against his ear.

His lips spread into a lazy grin and he delicately cupped her face in his palm. “I’m not very good at this,” he admitted quietly, “but for you, I’ll try.”

Their mouths met once again, tongues meeting earnestly as Lucanis slowly positioned himself.

With little urgency, he eased himself inside, his face scrunching up with pleasure as he entered deeper and deeper.

“Luka,” he uttered softly, “you are…” He let out a gasp, losing his train of thought for a moment.

Understanding his meaning regardless, Luka smiled tenderly. “So are you.”

A warm smile graced his lips and he bent forward to press a desperate kiss against her forehead, then her nose, and finally her lips.

She couldn’t help but giggle in response.

He continued pushing his way inside, with both of them releasing heavy moans. Once he reached the hilt, he stopped to take a deep breath. After he took a moment to compose himself, he pulled out and slammed back in.

“Lucanis…” Luka sighed, her voice breathy and soft.

He kept up his actions, rutting into her many times until he could take it no more. He held out as long as he could, but soon enough, he was spilling inside her, a deep exhale falling from his lips. Luka did her best to help him and reached down to her clit to finish herself off.

He collapsed on top of her and she laughed. “I guess I should take that as a compliment.”

“My apologies,” he said with a cough, pushing himself off of her. “I wasn’t thinking clearly for a moment.”

“Don’t apologize,” she murmured, reaching up to cup his face. “I like having you close like this.”

He smiled softly, leaning back down to capture her lips again.

After a while of sitting and cuddling, they had moved to a new position, with Luka sitting up against the couch and Lucanis laying across her lap.

Luka gazed down at Lucanis, her gaze uncharacteristically gentle as she trailed her hand across his forehead. Gradually, his eyes began to fall shut and she couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Are you…falling asleep?

Instantly, his eyes shot open and he grew defensive. “No! I never sleep.”

“It’s all right if you do,” Luka said, grinning in amusement. “Spite and I can play cards or something.”

“Don’t say that. I haven’t taught him Wicked Grace yet.” He paused a moment before continuing, “I’m not afraid of him. I just don’t want to waste time now that you’re here.”

“You still have to sleep sometimes,” Luka chuckled.

“With you here? Like this?” Lucanis insinuated, staring blatantly at her tits. “I’d rather stay awake.”

Luka took on a no-nonsense tone and said, “You’ll collapse while we’re fighting Elgar’nan and the others will never let you live it down.”

He sighed in response. “You may have a point.”

“Get some rest,” she said at a quieter volume. “We’re saving the world in the morning.”

He glanced off to the side, clearly deep in thought before he tentatively said, “Rook…Tomorrow…”

“Don’t say it…” Luka uttered, breaking eye contact with him. She didn’t want to think about what-ifs. She had already seen what happened when she failed. Her thoughts drifted to Davrin and Assan, to Bellara being pulled through the mirror, and to Lucanis’ unconscious body. She wasn’t going to lose anyone else if she could help it…Especially not the man in front of her.

“We’re ready,” she finished. Perhaps if she said it enough times, she’d believe it. “Nothing left to do but follow the plan and hope luck’s on our side.”

Lucanis’ eyebrows narrowed. “I’m not trusting luck. I’m using a dagger and striking first.”

She couldn’t help but chuckle in response.

Gradually, she eased down so that she was cuddling next to Lucanis. Closing her eyes, she laid her arm across his chest.

Things would be okay. They had to be. She’d finally found her chance at happiness. Elgar’nan and Solas weren’t going to stand in her way if she had anything to say about it.
