Evaluation:
D&DA - New Blood Awards: Dazed Media
Our task for this project was to make four 15 second videos, which worked well separately and together as one. The videos had to capture the spirit of individuality that Dazed Media represents.
We found that an ongoing research was really helpful in developing ideas through using a Pinterest board to find images that worked as ongoing inspiration and helped our idea development. Also to communicate with each other we used Facebook group chat, which helped with our project as we could share screenshots of what we were working on, which helped to give input on improvements needed. The use of Google Drive also helped a lot between the group as we could send larger files to each other and have easier access to them.
I have enjoyed this project because it was the first group project, we started off well to start, having regular meet ups in uni and meeting at each other’s flats to research and discuss ideas. The early development of the project up to the filming was going really well.
The difficult part of this project was that a lot of work had to be done over December, when we were all in different locations, I was in Cardiff, Ash was in Blackpool and Vic was in Birmingham. This made it difficult as we had to communicate through Facebook messenger.
Also I found finding time over December to work on the project was more difficult as I had started a new job, working 10 hour night shifts and having about a week off in total through the month, so I was either working or sleeping as I was non stop.
So in January we decided to power through when we got back in one place. We found the development of the project was a lot slower when we got back, we met up to do the initial colour grading and then I made the 3D model later on.
Working on the effects with Vic was really good, we worked really well together and knew what would look good and what didn’t suit the shot and the brief. We then found that there began to be a lack of communication as me and Vic wouldn’t receive many updates of the progress of roto work and compositing, it was like the project had been separated into two separate parts.
I found that I did a lot of the work in this project, it seemed a bit unfair since we divided the individual roles pretty fairly before going into post production. I didn’t mind doing the work on the shots, however we originally planned that the effects work was going to be shared between us.
It was a shame that the team got split up a bit, but after overcoming the issues, we managed to get an outcome to a reasonable standard. I’m happy with the shots I’ve worked on and think with a bit of revisiting to the project in the future we can make it even better.
Final outcome: Dazed Media
Part 4 Shots:
So we met up in uni to help Ash with fitting the 3D element into the shot.
I had to leave early due to having work, but we agreed since I had done a lot of the work already with the 3D modelling, doing the After Effects work on part 1-3 and adding colour grading to certain shots that the rest of the work can be left to Vic and Ash to finish.
So Vic will be helping Ash finish the Part 4 Shots and then she’ll be doing the behind the scenes video and the final edit.
Compositing the 3D Element.
Me and Vic found that we’ve had trouble communicating with Ash to agree on how the orb should look in the shot, we want something really subtle to fit with the rest of the shots but a lack of replies and updates through our group messages isn’t helping the situation.
We’ve decided to meet up with Ash in uni to sort the shots out and help to get the 3D model to fit better with the shot.

Making the 3D element in Cinema 4D:
Making the 3D model was pretty easy, it was just displacing the shape and animating the size and displacement of the shape.
Part 1-3 Effects:
So me and Vic worked together on the effects and finalising of the shots.
Vic stayed at mine and we went through each shot working out what could work for it and what was needed, I did the after effects work but through each shot Vic gave a lot of input on what was needed and we would discuss to make sure nothing else was needed so the shot would be complete.
We think that our shots have worked out really well and we have achieved the look that we wanted to suit to showing the individuality of Dazed but in their style.
Part 3: Final shots with effects
Me and Vic decided to make these effects more softer and simplistic compared to the Part 2 shots as we thought it suits to the soft but edgy style that Dazed has.

Part 3: Shot 7 effects
