I just love how KCD and KCD2 are just casually history classes about XVth century Europe. Like, yeah, please, destroy the clichés that the Enlightment philosophers and XIXth century intellectuals invented about the Middle Ages just to feel superior. Yeah, people bathed, yeah they were smart, fun, good-hearted as much as they were cruel, filthy and austere. They were just people.
I have become obsessed with this time period, no kidding, I'm activelly skimming through Wikipedia pages, learning fun facts and linking it to my already existing interessed. The way I only learned about the hussites wars at 24yo even tho their impact is HUGE across all of Europe, because my country was up to something else at the same period (yk, the Hundred Years War, Joan of Arc, this kind of stuff) This is me now : 🤓☝️
It made my DnD games more immersive, it opened my perspective to a bunch of new music genres (I now listen to gregorian chants and Guillaume de Machaut 😐). And I really want to get a vielle (the ancestor of violin).
The only thing that really bothered me about KCD2 was f***ing Brabant. Once again, the french guy is a coward and treacherous weirdo. Like please, change the tune for once. But I later learned that the Brabant duchy is in modern day Belgium so it's ok with me 👍No but with more seriousness, a hardcore history fan would have clocked the guy early on because brabander (from Brabant) is used as a synonym of mercenaries during the Middle Ages, a particulary heretic and violent kind of sellswords who devastated the countryside in times of peace.
Also, the story about saving the king of France from a medical attack might be cap, but Charles VI of France was indeed known to be ill, although it was a mental illness, supposedly schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
I also learned about Christine de Pisan (née Cristina de Pizzano), who is one of the first woman writer to have lived of her work and who wrote about womanhood and stood again misogyny (I mean, her ideas were still rooted in deep religious conservatism and classism but the opposite would have been straight up anachronistic). I'm pretty sure Rosa Ruthard would have been her N°1 fan.
Anyway, I could rent and continue to write about all I've learned but I dont think anyone would read that so I'm gonna stop it there.
Also I introduced my parents to Farkle and my mom have become more addicted to it than me now...
