Hi! I’m Jasm, a first-year dental student who’s struggling a bit (okay… a lot) 😅 I decided to open this study blog to hopefully motivate myself and stay consistent. We’ll see how it goes.

about my studies

first year dental is very foundation-based and science-heavy. It’s the bachelor phase, so no clinical work yet, just building the base for next years.

The first year is structured around three main moduls sfo — fundamental sciences smb — basic medical sciences sms — medical & social sciences

Which means a lot of biology, chemistry, anatomy, histology, physiology, and theory in general.

During first year, dental students have the same classes as medical students. The whole year leads up to three final exams, all at the end of the year, in may. no midterms, no second chances.

There’s also a ranking system. Even if you pass the exams, only the top 29 students are allowed to move on to second year dental.

so technically, you can pass… and still not pass.

Today I studied for ~4hours

The other day, I said I hated the endocrine system, but honestly… I actually find it really interesting and fascinating. I never really realised how important our hormones are and how much they regulate everything.

That being said, I’ll still be very grateful to finish this system tomorrow haha.

I also found a master’s thesis online called From the uniform of a subculture to its simulacrum: the Lacoste tracksuit as a meaningful symbol of class struggle.

It’s in French though, but it talks about class struggle, “subcultures,” and symbolism. It’s genuinely really interesting, so I might write something about it once I finish reading it.

What I learned today

Growth hormone (GH) increases blood glucose levels by reducing insulin sensitivity, which explains its close link with insulin and metabolism.

That class wasn’t that bad after all. I think i globally understood everything, now i just have to… keep it in mind haha.

I’m going to take a lunch break and try to start studying again in 1h30.

Study log — 14.01.26

I studied for 5 hours today. The endocrine system is not for the weak haha. Conceptually it’s not that hard, but memorising the names of all the hormones is another story.

I went to study at the library of my old high school, at least i’m sure i’ll always find a seat since it’s usually empty. It's funny because those buildings used to haunt me during high school, but coming back now feels strange, but also comforting, like a familiar place that no longer scares me.

Fun fact i learned today: Contractions during childbirth are caused by the hormone oxytocin (OT). Oxytocin is released by the posterior pituitary gland and acts on the smooth muscle of the uterine wall, triggering labour contractions.

I can’t wait for this week to be over so i can move on to another system, because the endocrine system is the worst so far.
