This semesters focus on illustration in the studio component gained my attention straight away, and made for a great experience during the in class sessions. And however type, publication and essentials more often more theory and computer based, the skills learnt in layouts, grids, typefaces and theory behind design was just as interesting as the studio classes.

Week Nine. GROUP PRESENTATION. Ideation

Today in class @jason-kolenda, @yungcurri, Dawn and I discussed the possibility of our group presentations and how to clearly and effectively communicate the outcome of this semester’s studio module based around the concept of food as design, and its metamorphic properties.

Inspired by the project “Catch of the Day”, Saatchi & Saatchi (2008) [5th image] we have come up with the idea to present our ‘cards’ like a collective catch of the day. This presentation was also inspired by the way we observe, select, and buy food in the realm of a corporate and consumer environment “the supermarket”.

Taking notions of food as sterile and contrived, coupled with the physicality of our final projects being presented through cards, we plan to create a 3D flat lay. This will be comprised of some kind of box or styrofoam container with a printed ‘background’ relative to each individual context [inspired by the pharmacy 2 restaurant at Newport Street Gallery].

Over the next coming weeks we plan on refining this concept and experimenting with flat lays while bearing in mind the environment of the alumni courtyard where the presentations will be made to our peers.

Barbara Kruger In the last lecture, Andy mentioned Barbara Kruger, who’s made notable feminist and anti-capitalist artwork. I think what’s really interesting in her work is the irony that surrounds it, as was noted during the lecture. Her work is mass produced and it’s hard to deny that it’s inspired a lot of brands.

WEEK 7 - Metamorphosis Looked further into the actual action of the metamorphosis, and how the food item (a prawn maybe), can transform. I explored this through color and the use of shape to create a form itself, aswell as looking into the overlap between the food item and the culture it is associated with.

WEEK 7 - LECTURE

Food as a performance/experience. This big salad was a “performance,” of food, done by Alison Knowles.

WEEK 6 - Veggie drawing(?) Had some great fun in this workshop using various vegetables, plants and materials to make a writing tool. After making the veggie pens, we worked the various qualities of each pen and created lettering using ink.

WEEK 6 - LECTURE

We looked into how food can be used and manipulated into different objects. Many of the examples replicated architectural forms.

WEEK 4 - PRODUCTION OF DESIGN

Over the three weeks in this class, we focussed on the theory and management steps that happen in the design process.

For this oral presentation, my group was given the “transitional,” typeface group to research. For my part I looked into the distinctive features of this type group.

WEEK 4 - LECTURE

In today’s lecture, Andy talked about “bad design,” which bends the rules and creates a more exclusive atmosphere as opposed to modern contemporary design, which is usually made to be legible and inclusive to everyone.

Colour and Information Design - Cultural repeat pattern

I found it really interesting looking into Japanese repeat patterns for my project, as the culture is filled with many key symbols, especially in their artwork.
