Idk why but sometimes people really struggle to truly understand Dean's atheism and it's depth and motivations uk? It's not something that's caused by his issues or smth. It's a core character trait. Sam's faith vs. Dean's lack of it is literally essential parts of their characters. Their lives as hunters and children of John as well as chosen sacrificial lambs for the apocalypse all lead to that attitude.

And I think this extends to destiel too. Cas is the man with faith. Who then proceeded to spend several seasons having that faith torn apart. Dean, on the other hand, had his wistful faith torn down in like one season at most. Like a normal human person (who has to deal with cosmic issues no less), he has an evolving relationship with faith of any kind. But he's really clear. At the end of the day, he doesn't believe in anyone or anything all-powerful and uncaring. He believes in his loved ones. In his family. In Earth and Humanity. In his own choice of putting the well-being of the most vulnerable (humanity in a cosmic sense) people. In caring so much about all of it even when it breaks you apart.

This is where his faith in Cas comes in. I think it's an important part of the narrative that Dean's faith in Cas isn't godly. It's not religious. It's devotion in a painfully human way. He believes in Cas because he loves him so much as a person. Not as an angel. Not as a weapon. Not as the new replacement for God. His love for Cas begets blind faith in the man because he loves him like he would love a human partner. He includes Cas in his daily domestic life. He enlists Cas's help in all their affairs. He wants to take care of Cas when he's weak or sick. He relies on him like a partner would. Like a spouse would. He puts him in a cowboy hat and takes a lil photo. He prays to him because he wants to connect with him. To him, it's like a text that Cas can't miss. It's a plea to be heard and responded to. He makes him pb and j sandwiches. He takes him to a brothel. He wants him to learn how to flirt even when it drives him insane. He called him by his nickname within minutes of meeting him. He dropped the godly suffix instantly. He wanted to tell Cas he's so much more than just a weapon. He thinks Cas is a dork. He thinks Cas is just a lil guy. He wants him so close at all times. It isn't religious. It's really important to me because Cas is a character who has spent all of time in a faith-based genocidal military cult. He doesn't need to be seen as a God. (Famously didn't work out so hot for him). He needs someone who will tell him he's a person and hold him close in all his intensity. He needs someone to tell him he's Good enough as a person, not a shield. And THAT'S insane to Cas. That's not a thing he ever imagined he could have. And that's why it matters so much that he gets to have it.

My opinion about the work:

Featuring a lot of tension, bickering and the reformulation of some fabulous scenes from the series itself (including one of our favorites, the one in the alley), I find myself really liking it.

I'm not usually drawn to soulmates AU, but this short piece has a special kind of approach to the idea that just makes it very natural. It has a more informal style of writing that I, personally, am very fond of.

If you like creature Cas, this fic highlights his non-human aspects really well.

Post-canon Destiel, Dean is focused on the fact that Cas is in love with him, yes, but also that Cas hasn’t been happy. His brilliant plan with no ulterior motives whatsoever is to offer to kiss him. Once. For his happiness. Because getting a kiss from someone you love makes people happy, right?

Cue them making out while Dean breathes out excuses about “making Cas happy” between kisses.

Then, of course, every time Cas “seems down” (so just whenever Dean feels like it) he offers to “cheer him up”, and they end up making out again. Rinse and repeat.
