“katsuki, i’m watching it for research purposes.”

“research, my ass. you’re staring at my chest the whole time.” he points at the screen. “i see how your eyes drift, you pervert.”

you gasp, placing a dramatic hand over your chest.

“excuse you!? i take this ad very seriously, just so you know.”

a smile threatens to break across your face, but you fight it.

“oh yeah?” he asks, a smirk tugging at his lips as well. “what’s the ad about then?”

you immediately freeze.

“ugh— it’s about…” your eyes dart to the screen. “uh…”

nothing. your brain comes up completely blank.

a second passes. then an idea hits.

“you don’t know your own ad, katsuki?” you fire back. “that’s so unprofessional.”

his smirk vanishes.

“hah?” he lifts his head, staring at you in disbelief. “what kind of comeback is that?”

“it’s a valid question.”

“no, it’s not!”

“it is.”

“you’re full of shit.”

a laugh slips out before you can stop it.

“sounds like someone doesn’t know his own ad.”

his eye twitches.

“don’t turn this against me.” he points at you accusingly. “give me that phone.”

“nope.”

“give it.”

“make me.”

the second the words leave your mouth, you regret them. his grin is immediate.

“oh, now you’ve done it.”

“katsuki—”

he lunges across the couch.

“no— katsuki!!”

you squeal, nearly dropping your phone as you scramble away. he grabs for it while you twist out of reach, both of you laughing and shoving each other around the cushions.

“hand it over!”

“never!”

“you watched it twelve times!”

“research purposes!”

“liar!” he barks, already trying to pry the phone from your hands while you laugh again.

It's hard to say this without sounding like a right wing dickhead, but the thing about progressive spaces is that they may naturally attract people who are always on the lookout for excuses to start a fight. Like you can find yourself faced with someone whose political outrage is totally justified, and whose humanitarian ideals are right on the money, but simultaneously they are carrying a ton of psychological baggage about being wronged and getting revenge, and they will exploit literally any opportunity to live out this psychodrama with anyone in their line of vision. I have thought of several related anecdotes since I started typing this post, but I'll limit myself to the thing that inspired it, which is that I just visited this ultra-lefty cafe/bike shop/community gathering space where I've heard that the proprietor is constantly in a fight with everyone around her. When I paid for my stuff I noticed that there was no tip option, but I thought I had heard something about this, so I snuck away to look at the website and it made me really glad I didn't ask! I think there should have been a really enticing and exciting way for her to say "I've decided to be the change I want to see in the world, so I'm paying my baristas a full living wage, I'm making sure EVERYONE feels welcome and comfortable here, and I'm selling products I believe in!" -- but instead all the web copy sounded more like "You're either with me or against me, you're a fucking piece of shit asshole if you can't handle the inclusive atmosphere here, and by the way tipping is for fascist cavemen and if you ever try to tip someone you are refusing to relate to them authentically and you are enforcing a dangerous and evil power dynamic that should be purged from human society (so therefore I pay my staff well)." Like everything she stood for was totally agreeable, but why did she have to put it like it was directed at her worst enemy, rather than at the kinds of people she wants to attract? If the word on the street is to be believed, the reason for this posturing is that she spends quite a lot of energy making as many enemies as possible, and she probably likes it that way. I guess I'm just reminding myself, and perhaps others, that while one might think of "politics" as being broadly social and theoretical, no individual can fully separate the political from the intimately personal. Even somebody who seems to want to uplift and protect their fellow humans may be getting some perverse inner satisfaction out of that valiant crusade, and you may never realize it until you find yourself in a confusing fight with them.

I ran a LARP for a few years explicitly aimed at being queer friendly and accessible, and eventually cut it short mainly for this exact reason. You wouldn’t believe the amount of abuse my staff and I took for reasons that felt genuinely insane. I got called ableist for telling someone they couldn’t be invincible in my game of make believe, more than once. Defended myself, multiple Jewish players, and a conversion student from accusations of antisemitism based on alleged lore we’d never written / suggested / that simply and plainly did not exist in game. Had a staffer try to talk to someone about how a joke she made was uncomfortable only for this person to retaliate in epic proportions full white woman crocodile tears style, trying to get this staffer removed and eventually escalating into a full public hate campaign when she didn’t get her way. All that’s still just the tip of the iceberg.

Progressive spaces are naturally populated by traumatized people, and unfortunately trauma makes people more difficult. (I’m not excluded in that. No one is.) Running a progressive space is doubly difficult because a lot of left-facing trauma was inflicted by authority, so you’re setting yourself up to be the windmill that someone tilts their displaced rage at. I don’t really know what the solution is, but I do know that this is one of the huge reasons it’s so hard to find community: the people with a bone to pick can’t reach the ones who actually hurt them, but they’ll sure find you along the way, and the safer they feel around you the safer they’ll feel coming after you.

katsuki would bring extra snacks & offer them to you because he noticed you sneaking downstairs to raid the kitchen, is always quick to pass you a plate, or bowl, or just a brownie—before your brother gets the chance most of the time.

katsuki thinks he's slick about his crush, but it's painfully obvious to just about everyone but you.

katsuki started figuring out little ways to include you in the friend group, blissfully unaware that the moment he suggested bringing you, Kirishima was expecting to be told you were dating soon after.

katsuki who snuck into your room one night during one of the sleepovers, his friends were bickering over a video game, & he took the opportunity, finding you getting ready for bed, making a fool of himself, and accidentally started a domino effect.

You'd always end up seeking the other out.

katsuki ends up crashing in your room at every chance, claiming the atmosphere was "too loud." from the extras & started spending more time tucked in your room than out with his friends.

katsuki dozed off in your bed one night while you were showering & woke up to the feeling of your damp hair prickling against his chest, dazed & out of it at the sight of you cuddling up against him.

katsuki silently wrapped an arm around your shoulder, stroking your shoulder slowly & watched you get more comfortable against him, letting you live in it & take it as it were, you felt safe with him.

katsuki only woke up from the flash of Mina's phone at 3 am, where his friends were all crowded around your bed snapping photos of you using Kats as your personal teddy bear—glared at them, silencing them with a single eye twitch and hissed "If you wake her up, I swear to god—"

katsuki didn't move a muscle & stayed put after Kirishima finally dragged their friends out of your room with a quiet "we're talking about this in the morning." as he motioned between you both before leaving.

katsuki completely forgot he'd been annoyed the moment he felt your fingers lazily stroking his chest, & froze up when your lips softly pressed against his cheek.

katsuki knows he's completely smitten.

keep thinking about how I wrote in my dissertation about how every time a new form of public/social space emerges it's immediately popular with kids and teenagers who see it as a chance at freedom and then adults colonise it and kick them out. this happened with malls in the 80s and diners in the 50s and pool halls in the 20s. my dad was doing research on this trend in like 1975. and I was like "yeah so this is going to happen to the internet" and then five years later every government suddenly decided to ban kids from everywhere online. I hate being right especially when I don't even get paid for it

I’ll never forget I once had to break the news to two women that their dog had cancer, and as they cried and hugged and asked me questions I said something about how I was grateful this pup had such a loving family to support her- only for these ladies to inform me one of them wasn’t actually an owner at all, she was just the other woman’s Uber driver…

So this driver tells me she’s literally never met the other lady in her life, but when this passenger started crying in the car with her dog because she was worried, this angel in the form of an Uber driver went off the clock, came inside the building, and waited over an hour in a busy emergency room with a complete stranger just so she would have someone there by her side in a scary situation. This woman even took notes about everything I said so the owner wouldn’t have to try and remember it all later.

I see plenty of stuff at my job that makes me tempted to lose my faith in humanity but all I do is remember that Uber driver and it comes roaring back to me just like that. Humans are so unbelievably good, man.
