They are known to be LOYAL and GRUMPY which makes sense when you think about how they were the OLDER BROTHER OF JULIA BENSON who went missing 5 years ago. Born and raised in Ashford, Jax grew up with his mother Delta Benson and father Dean Benson in a small trailer on the west side of Windy Harbors. The trailer was falling apart in all the ways you can imagine a dysfunctional family could live in, dirt all over the floors, holds in the wall his father had made just before hitting his mother and cockroaches scattering around when anyone made a noise. Jax remembers the sound of rats running around has he was trying to sleep because they would climb up though the floor to get warm in the winter.
His mother was a kind hearted woman who tried her hardest to protect and give Jax a loving home while working as a waitress at The Griddle to provide for her family, his father was a dangerous alcoholic who would take any money his mother made from The Griddle and frequently beat him and his mother for any reason he did or did not have.
The contrast of a loving mother and an abusive father lead him to grow up concealing his true emotions behind an angry mask, never allowing anyone to see how he truly felt and putting all of his emotions into arguing and fighting. During school he'd regularly be in detention for starting fights at school but wasn't a bad student academically, he wasn't the best at written classes like English or history and would fail them but he did excel in classes that allowed him to use his hands and body like physical education and woodwork/metal working classes.
He spent most of his early childhood hangout at The Griddle with his mother while she worked, at the Big Guns Gym letting out frustrations on a boxing bag or finding trouble with his friends. Jax was never the bully type because he never wanted to make anyone feel the way he did at home, but that didn't stop him getting into fights with other people who were bullies, being disrespectful or just people he had issues with. This lead him to have a reputation of being an asshole to most but only people who really knew him understood the boy behind the mask, a protective friend who would go out of his way to do anything to keep his friends safe. He was good at cracking a joke from time to time and people enjoyed the softie behind the rough exterior.
Hes world changed at the age of 9 when his mother found out she was pregnant with his sister, he was excited to get a sibling but that feeling quickly faded when he realised that his father would put her through what him and his mother endured. He promised himself and his mother that he would protect her from everything that would hurt his sister and for awhile everything was okay, his father seemed to had cleaned himself up for the baby and Jax had hope that things were really changing, until that night.
When Delta was around 8 months though her pregnancy she had a serious fall during work, while she and the baby weren't harmed at all the doctor suggested for safety reasons that she go on maternity leave early for the health of the baby. With her not working there would be no money entering the house which Dean was not happy with, he spent that night getting blackout drunk at the Corner Pub. In the middle of the night he came crashing though the front door, taking it off it hinges and screaming for Delta, waking Jax up in the process. While Jax only remembers a few bits of that night, he remembers standing up to his father to protect his mother and sister, the screaming, the crying, the pain and then flashing of red and blue lights of police cars. That night his father was arrested and sent to prison for abuse.
Jax and Delta stayed with The Griddle owner Millie Baker while his mother recovered from the traumatic experience and prepared for the birth of her baby. Thanks to the help of some support services, Delta and Jax were able to move out of the trailer park and into a small, clean house where Jax no longer had to hear the rats while he slept.
Julia was born and life became simple, while not much had chanced besides a new house and the addition of a little sister. Delta went back to work at the griddle, Jax would look after Julia while she worked but he continued to have issues at school and even though he still hid his feelings behind a mask, he because a caring and kind big brother to Julia, promising to protect her.
As he grew older he found that working with his hands was something he was great at and would spend time at the junkyard just out of town building random things and deconstruct broken cars and putting them back together, understanding how cars worked and was even able to fix up a truck he was able to drive.
He spent high school drinking and smoking pot in his free time, even skipping school to get high with his friends at the junkyard, abandoned movie theatre or really anywhere he can just chill. He was still getting into fights and still working on cars but spent time at Wrench Doc learning from the owner, becoming a skilled mechanic.
At 18 Jax left school and started an apprenticeship at Wrench Doc which lead him to be a fully skilled mechanic by the time he was 21.
The day of Julia's disappearance, Jax and his family all went to the towns easter celebration. The day started out normal, they all enjoyed the games and ate so much food their bellies might burst. It was the perfect day, at least that's what Jax thought. During the easter egg hunt Julia had excused herself to hang out with some friends but promised to meet back up at the cotton candy stall in a couple of hours so Jax hung out with his friends and Delta went to hang out with hers. When the event was coming to a close both Jax and Delta waited for Julia, but she never came. So Jax and Delta looked around and found her group of friends, they asked where she was and they explained they hadn't seen her that day. Panicked, Jax and Delta ran around all over the event to find her as it wasn't like her to just leave and not let them know. They spent hours trying to find her, even recruiting members of the community but no one could find her.
Hours turned to days, turned to weeks then turned to weeks. As the weeks went on delta became more unstable with the thought that her younger daughter being lost, kidnapped or dead. Jax feel harder into drugs and drinking, feeling the days go by as he got more angry and started losing hope. He failed to protect her, he broke his promise and he couldn't forgive himself
These days he continues to work, smoke and drink but he keeps his head up, the mask is still on and wont slip off… or will it?

Headcanons Jax has a pet 6 year old tabby cat named Muffin who was a stray kitten Julia found and took home, Jax has been looking after her since Julia's disappearance.
Hes is a regular at The Griddle, he likes their waffles and coffee but he goes to check up on his mother mainly, He goes every morning before work.
