⟫ an original dependent character for @ashfordhqs written by—gabby, 27, est, she/they
savannah hadn't properly spoken to raven since the events of the valentine's day bash. truthfully, she had become a bit distant, choosing to keep herself busy to distract herself from everything that she had seen. this included working overtime, being in nurse mode was easy, almost like auto pilot.
the blonde freezes when she notices the other girl approaching her, forcing a smile on her lips. "it depends, did they put out fresh blueberry one's? boston cream?" she spoke, playing with the tie on her scrub pants in a nervous manner.
"yeah, people have been lining up for the blueberry jam doughnuts—i got three, and before you say anything, i am going to be working the whole day, so i think i deserve this." raven says with a smug look on her face. "i also got some boston cream. you want one of each"?" she offers, not being able to help but notice the way she's been playing with the tie of her clothing.
"i'm sorry if i'm going to ask this, i know you're probably sick of it by now, but...you okay?" she asks, not being able to hide her worry now. "i mean...do you wanna talk about it? off the record, if you're...worried and shit."
✤ silence was hardly ever a state you could find luara in, yet as they walked behind raven and crossed the threshold of her home, silence was the only thing they could manage, along with the firm thud of their steps. they have finally found someone who didn’t deem them crazy or look at them with pity for what they’ve been doing since jae’s disappearance, and the fact was so precious and unbelievable at the same time that luara couldn’t help but be rendered speechless. she entered raven’s home with care and a great deal of solemnity, carefully assessing the place that, yes, it was a mess, but it seemed like an organized one, like the kind of mess in which you knew exactly where everything was. it reminded luara of the way her grandmother organized her books, and she couldn’t help but beam slightly. “ please, don’t apologize, this—it’s okay, i get it. ” they weren’t the most organized person either, at least, not in the common usage of the word, so they couldn’t ( and wouldn’t ) allow themself to be judgemental. “ i’m here to help, and as long as we have an space to work, it’ll be okay. ” the reassurance came accompanied by a smile whose softness was uncharacteristic for the intensity that ruled luara’s life, yet it was there, unavoidable, just for the one who finally seemed to understand their madness. “ now tell me, what books have you read, hm ? because i don’t remember seeing you stop by books and beats, so i doubt you’ve gone through every single one of them. ”
it's just new for raven not to work on something alone this time. of course, she had people she had connected with over her podcast for the past couple of years, yet not the way that she's about to do with luara right now. they're very much the first person to see the physical manifestation of raven's brain, the scattered yellow papers with her scrambled handwritings, her board of articles and pictures basically connected to each other with red strings, books from the town's library (as per holly's suggestion, she started looking through them, too), and the missing posters of cierra flores and the ashford five.
"maybe i was around during the times you aren't...you know?" raven responds with a small grin, picking up some books from the couch to make space for the other, and stacking them on top of the coffee table. "want anything to drink, coffee, juice? erm i got...apple here." she asks, opening her fridge for a second. "have you ever kept more books about ashford in the back? like...ones that weren't really bought over the years so they're all just in inventory and stuff?" she couldn't resist starting to basically ramble, hoping the other could catch up. "do we ever have a collection of myths? folklore? because..." she trails off, scrambling to get the papers with ciphers that she's solved on her own. "i've found these, and they mention...you read it..." she passes the papers along. "i made recording of when i've found them. and...oh, erm...this too. i found this by the door." she hands her the note containing some passage. "what do you think?"
if savannah was going to somehow survive this dreaded day shift that she had picked up, she knew she needed caffeine. thankfully one of the few day shift nurses she liked was working with her. so, she decided to stop by sweet tooth to grab some coffee and a little treat for the two of them.
while she was waiting in line for her donuts and beverages, she spots raven out of the corner of her eye. she rolled her eyes, hoping that she wouldn't be approached. already basically running on fumes before her work day, she wasn't particularly in the chatty mood.
( closed starter for @pr3ttyinpanic )
in raven's line of work, there is this thin line between being empathetic and needing to get the answers to her never-ending questions. she knew what happened back at eden, how savannah had to be the unfortunate one of finding the bodies of yazmin, emine and julia. her inkling was right, walking in the event that day, that's why she couldn't have her defenses down.
raven wanted to know how it all happened, yet chose not to find it out through savannah, only imagining how hard it is. she can't even begin to put it to words.
hence the struggle of wanting to talk to the other as she sees her. she had a bag of donuts in her arms, and a cup of large coffee. she was going to go through some books tonight. before she knew it, she was walking up to the dancer.
"want a donut?"

with: luara valente (@fyluara) where: raven's place
raven kept her home sacred ever since her arrival to ashford after so many years of being away with the intention of preserving the clues she has found. the photos of the ciphers, her voice recordings, her analysis, her board, no one has ever laid their eyes upon them yet, not until she's found out luara has been looking into things as she does. she feels...heard with the few things that she's laid out for the other that she knew so could trust them, something that is very rare to find at this point in time, especially when...she's found the very thing that could change what this town knows.
she knew and understood luara's intention of doing what's she's done so far. both of them just wanted answers, and now...be able to save jae, hoping that he's still alive like adem is. that...he was able to get out too.
"i'm...sorry everything's a fucking mess." raven says the moment she opens the door to her place, books scattered on the couch and some papers on the floor, the last clue she had worked on with coffee stains still on the table. "i've been going through every single book about this town i can find and...it's really hard to support the working theory i'm having right now...and i really need your help."
TEXT TO ✉️ RAVEN
PILAR: hey stranger PILAR: heard you were back in town PILAR: thought you could sneak under the radar? RAVEN: i'm surprised you find out just now RAVEN: but that means i'm doing a good enough job with being sneaky RAVEN: how have you been?
✉ → Raven
Genevieve: I'm okay... How are you? Raven: i'm too...fucked up to rest, gen. feels like we're really in a race against time right now. Raven: three of them, dead, adem's found, jae's nowhere to be seen.
"Wait," Holly paused and put her hand up. She didn't think Raven would lie to her. It didn't seem like the other woman to do so. Raven was a journalist and she knew what she was doing. But sacrifices seemed a bit of a stretch, unless Raven had to sources to prove such a claim. "Back up a little bit if you don't mind, because what do you exactly mean by people are being sacrificed because there's a big difference between a weird cult running the town and cult that sacrifices people." then Holly paused again. And she thought. "Okay. So what hole is in your research right now, then?"
"okay, so lemme read the note that i found weeks ago." raven takes her phone and goes through the photos she has taken, until she was able to find the one with the message on it. "it goes...mourn not the vessel that is unmade. honor the passage it completes. for the gate opens only once each age, and only to those who understand that to be taken is to be returned to the whole." raven then turns to look at holly. "it just sounds like...they have to sacrifice a life...or lives during a certain period of time, and there's this fucked up reason we're yet to find out why." she slips her phone in her messenger bag. "i have found some clues where i don't see the connection to it at all, like the word folklore. i have a feeling reading more into our history may give me clues, you know?"
A HUMORLESS LAUGH vibrates from ki-jung’s throat when they receive an answer, one that does nothing to mitigate the annoyance they feel. on the contrary, if the words do something, that’s vexing them even more, making their hands move hastily as they finish tying their knot. “ working ? ” they echo with a huff once they’re done, their usually calm demeanor a lot harsher. they don’t know where this bravado comes from. it might come from simply being fed up by raven’s presence, by her snooping around that alters the tranquility of the place they so often call home, but it’s there, unfaltering and raw, and it just gets emboldened the more the girl talks. “ we all need answers, raven, yes. but what makes you think you’re any different from the rest of us looking for them ? ” because ki-jung has also been searching for answers, endlessly, in fact. every day. there’s not a single morning before work they don’t review jae-young’s last steps, the last place he was seen, the last fucking thing he ate. and despite all the efforts, despite all the crazy things they’ve considered, they were still here with empty hands and an even emptier chest. “ you should go look somewhere else. trust me, i would know. there’s nothing here but the smell of fish and rowdy men. ”
the tone of kijung's response made raven's eyebrow raise, of course, she's expected this, especially with the timing of her coming back after all these years, when five people went missing. it does seem suspicious, that she was taking advantage of this, monetizing, yet that wasn't the case. "because i've seen and found things, kijung. things that aren't even seen most importantly by these cops claiming they're going to help, but they're not." she turns to look at her, slightly glaring, perhaps it was her frustration, mixed with a bit of exhaustion that's been making her snappy lately. "i'm sorry..." she presses the bridge of her nose between her index and pinky fingers. "i just wanted to make sure that i've not missed anything."
"Oh. Wait you're talking about something you got?" Holly realized. This changed everything she was talking about. She felt a little silly, but there wasn't any time to dwell. There were people missing and now a creepy by the person she knew investigated this the most. "Well, I mean. You've done more than the cops, I assume. They are too busy writing parking tickets and eating breakfast at the Griddle to notice, I guess." Holly paused. Her hand gentled placed itself on Raven's shoulder. "I think you have something. I don't know if it's everything, but you have something. Maybe, it's over thinking? If there's creepy ransom notes and information that seems vague in local history books, a cover-up isn't unlikely, Raven. But what is this theory of yours?"
raven nods at holly's question, humming as she recalls the things that were on that paper. "i think they just gave up the second the realized it's a cold case, or that...it's just a coincidence that five people in this town decided to leave and vanish into oblivion. they're fucking useless." this frustrated raven that it has been the same case, wherever she goes. "my theory is that...this isn't just a work of one person. that...it's a group, a cult." she starts to explain. "that this is some classic shit that they have to sacrifice people for whatever fucking purpose they have...it's hella fucked up. but this is where i'm going right now."
✉ → Raven
Genevieve: Hey Raven Raven: hey, gen...you doing okay?
Still panting heavily she eventually collected herself and stood up with the help of Raven. Wiggling ever so slightly she readjusted herself as she slipped her thong back into place and tugged her skirt back down to cover herself. "Did somebody scream?" She questioned the obvious before itching forward to pull open the cubicle door and leaving the confined space. She followed Raven as they both exited the bathroom to find out what all the commotion was about, this better be good considering it interrupted them at a very crucial moment for her. "What the fuck is happening?" She spoke quietly to Raven. The panic was really making her worried, she had no idea what to expect.
Eventually she had manoeuvred her way through the crowd, pushing her way past people to see what the fuss was about and what they could possibly be looking at. What she hadn't prepared for was her worst nightmare, she hadn't prepared to see one of her cousins propped up like a doll in the closet. "Emine?" She spoke through a shakey voice as she pushed past the remaining people and into the closet. Her hand resting on her cousins cold arm. "Emine, sweetie?" Her voice cracked as she felt a lump in her throat as she came to realisation of what this was.
"yeah, somebody did." and it was a scream that stunned the place to silence, as she could hear how the music had just died, followed by hushed voices and a rumble of footsteps, which the two women had followed, a protective arm wrapped around her waist as raven didn't want to lose asel in the crowd. "i...i don't know." she couldn't tell, at this poiint, her mind was already going places, worried with what they're about to see, what this is going to lead into.
and the second everybody realizes what it was, or...who they were all seeing, that's where the pin dropped, and the there's the crash in raven's head, eyes wide, panic-stricken as her brain starts processing all of these once more, the clues she had been finding all over ashford, the note that landed on her feet, the lights going out just minutes ago. she finds herself quietly following asel, watching her.
"asel...she's...they're dead." they were all dead, emine, yazmin, julia.
where are the others?
Open starter for 3 people Location start: Jaxson apartment
Jaxon had become a shell of the man he used to be ever since that night, seeing his sister after all these years of hope or anger or really whatever drove him he couldn't remember anymore, he couldn't comprehend and deal with the grief. He was broken, laying on his couch day and night with the image of julias dead body while barely being sober at all, how could he be sober? the pain would only be worse that way. Jaxon has let his phone go to voicemail for days, he didn't want to deal with people on a normal day but now he didn't have the energy. No ones heard from him at all, that's until someone knocked on his door.
seeing the dead bodies that were left during that day...it only escalated raven's worries even further, they were in a race against time, with whatever the hell it is that took the five of them and now has left three of them dead for people to find. she felt like as if that they were sending a message, perhaps letting people know of their presence? it had just proven what she's found before the event. there were few possibilities, this could be work of one person, or a group, or...like some of her theories, either connected to paul sanderson in ways of being sick fanatics of what he did, if he really did what he did, or that paul didn't really do it, and this was a work of some cult that resided in their town, with their presence being unknown for so many years. right now, she puts all of those thoughts to the side as she knocks on jaxon's door, someone who has been helping her here and there when she started her own investigation upon going back to ashford.
"jax? hey..." she shouts from the outside. "i got you soup! and some grub...please let me in?"
"What letter are you talking about?" Holly asks. Her eyes never lift from the page, but she does pass the book back to Raven. "I mean. Letters don't just spontaneously come from nowhere. There had to be a reason for it to be sent. Either to or from someone." Holly paused and tilts her head to the side. Her mind races to what could be missing. Assuming Raven is right, which Holly is willing to trust someone who does this kind of research for a living, there had to be something out there to support her claims. "What I'm saying is that, if there is one letter, or a few, there is bound to be more. I think you're being hard on yourself. Because you're finding a gap in the research the book has given you."
"some letter stylized like a ransom note in those old movies, you know? like the letters cut out from old clippings from magazines. it's not really a letter that was directed to me, but more like...flew to my doorstep one morning." raven starts to explain, trusting that holly isn't going to tell anyone else what she's been finding lately. "i just feel like i'm racing against it, you know? that this has been dragging on for far too long and nobody's really done a thing, especially the fucking cops." she says the last part with disdain. "i'm just terrified of missing something, anything, that could help us finally get to the bottom of this."
