“Jake, he’s bound to move at some point. Nobody can stand that still for that long. You’re seriously waiting? —You’re nuts.”
“I can stand still longer than he can, I swear.” He said with a nod, watching, “It may be his job to be still, but I think I could be better at it than him.”
“Huh? I’m not entirely sure what you’re on about..”
“That guy.” He pointed over the the statuesque man, painted in gold. “He only moves when you don’t look, I swear.”
“I think you are seeing things, dude.”
“I’m not.” He said with almost absolute certainty. “That guy is real, and he only moves when--” He stopped talking as the statuesque man blinked, “There! See. He blinked. He moved. I am not crazy.”
“Who, the dead guy? — Are you on something?”
“No.” He shook his head, “Who’s dead?” Jake pointed to the golden painted man, “That guy. He only moves when I look away, I swear.”
Bex furrowed her eyebrows into a tightly-knit line with the slightest fear that she’d offended the guy. Sure, she was the type who lived to have a good time, but not at the expense of someone’s feelings. Contrary to popular belief, she wasn’t a cold-hearted bitch. “I wasn’t accusing you of doing drugs, relax.”
“Then why--” He looked at her confused, “Was that the first thing you said?” It was the last place his mind went hell-- even if it found its way to there. “It’s just hat--” His words were cut off short when the actor moved again, “I knew!”

“What,” Devyn asked aloud as she took a step back. “I hate these things. For some reason, I love scary movies but I can’t deal with these statues and clowns. Can you walk in front of me?”
“You want me to--” He looked at her for a second, then to the man, then back to her. His gut told him no, but his faint sense of chivalry told him yes. Jake ignored the thrumming in his stomach and nodded. Sure. I’ll just--” He started walking, hoping she’d follow or whatever she wanted.
When the painted man moved a few inches when children walked by, Katherine couldn’t help but giggle softly to their reactions. When she heard the reaction from the man next to her, she looked over at him and nodded. “Indeed I did! He did just move and is quite good at it.” She smiled before speaking more. “I would hate to have his job, though. I couldn’t imagine how i’d feel after standing still for hours on end.”
“Good.” He nodded, still looking at the golden painted man, “Every time I look away I think he moves, but when I go back to looking he is completely still. I think he’s taunting me.” Jake said with a huff, a little more emotive than he usually was. After a long minute he finally turned to look to the girl, “I don’t think it’s the stand that would bother me. It’s all the people who stare at you as they go by.”
“It’s that whole living art thing. They’re real people, and I don’t know how they do this. I’d be slumped over after ten minutes, shifting from foot to foot and stuff.”
“I mean, I know that.” He nodded, “It’s just-- I think that one’s taunting me. Only moving when I look away, or when he thinks i look away.” His eyes were still on the man, but he nodded to the guy talking to him, “I couldn’t do it that’s for sure. Too many people staring at them.”
“Are you high?” Bexley smirked, watching the guy with a look of pure amusement plastered to her features. “If you aren’t, looking at them is probably more fun when you are.”
“What?” He looked at the girl confused, “I’ve never done drugs?” He was quiet for a long second, “Why would I do drugs?”
“Well, you didn’t miss it this time, did you?” Montana looked at the person covered in gold paint and shook her head. “My siblings and I, we had this thing going when we’d like stare at them until they moved and whoever called it first won. And you earned points for that and whoever had less points at any time had to do the others’ chores.”
“I don’t know. It could just be my eyes playing tricks on me.” He said, eyes never moving from the golden man. “You know.” He said, finally looking away, “That’s a good idea. I think you should do all my dishes now.” He said shyly, before shaking his head, “Kidding, just kidding.”
“You didn’t know they move? That’s like, their whole thing.”
“I do know they move. They just-- move when you least expect them to. Then you’re not ready, and well-- you miss it and. I just--”
The cup of coffee in her hand stopped at her lips as she watched Jacob, and then watched the main painted in gold, and came back to stare at the guy blankly. “You’ve seriously been watching this like a hawk, haven’t you?”
“Yes!” His eyes were still on the man, “He was a very convincing statue, and now it’s all just a lie.” The guy hadn’t moved since he noticed, and even then it barely counted. “He’s gonna move again. I promise. It’s just-- a waiting game.”
“Did you like-- did you just see that. I swear he just moved. Oh my goodness--”
