Okay, so for anyone saying that Kaoru ‘only liked Haruhi’ and that he ‘wasn’t actually in love with her’, this is why I disagree.
Kaoru realized early on his feelings for Haruhi, way earlier than anyone else did. He didn’t say anything for Hikaru’s sake, and he may have never told him if Hikaru wouldn’t have confronted him about it. From the beginning he liked her, but he was never going to tell her how he felt until he saw how slow Hikaru was about acting on his feeling for Haruhi. Everyone already knows that he loves Hikaru more than himself, so it doesn’t matter how much he loved her in the end, he would never take her from him.
Even though he wasn’t going to act on his feelings until he realized Hikaru needed that little push, that doesn’t mean he didn’t love her as much as the others. I think he’s just really good at hiding his feelings, and had Haruhi been interested in him as well, I don’t doubt that he wouldn’t have went for it. He can handle not ending up with the person of his choosing (Haruhi), and he also knew that Hikaru needed to learn how to love someone other than himself. Honestly, almost everything Kaoru did was self-sacrificing and selfless. However, here we see Kaoru acting a bit more selfish than usual. All of that pent-up stress from holding back his feelings, constantly having to be the more mature and civil twin, and not allowing himself to act on or say what he truly wants to kind of just all comes out at once. He even stated that although he felt guilty, he had to be harsh so that Hikaru would take his own feelings seriously.
Remember when he talked with Hani about his feelings?? They were pretty strong, and Hani knew just how strong Kaoru’s feelings truly were for her.
Hani told him multiple times to stop thinking about everyone else and to just focus on what he wants, but Kaoru absolutely cannot do that. If Kaoru didn’t love her, why would all of this had been so hard? If she was merely just a crush, why would this whole situation bring him so many tears and cause so much stress?
He did love her. He’s just selfless to a fault, and he even said that he cherishes the club too much to jeopardize it’s current status. He knew that if he acted on his feelings, it would cause problems for everyone, as he also knew how Hikaru and Tamaki felt. You can see how much he loves her, but he knows that Hikaru needed this more than he did. He knew that Hikaru would benefit more from loving her than he would, as he felt Hikaru would grow tremendously from this.
Yes, he confessed because he wanted Hikaru to realize his feelings. But I also think he did it for himself a bit as well. He’s had this on his chest for a while, and even though he knew she didn’t feel the same way, this was that little push he needed to accept his feelings and vocalize them. Even though he did it for Hikaru, I think he gained closure from this, and it made him happy knowing that Hikaru had finally realized just how serious his feelings for Haruhi were. (Even though we all wanted a better outcome for him, because in all honesty he deserved so much more than he got, in the end I think he was okay with all of this. I know it probably hurt, and he probably cried a lot over this, but I think this made his heart happy knowing Hikaru had one less person fighting for Haruhi’s feelings).
Even though Kaoru may have not loved her as much as Hikaru or Tamaki, he still did love her. Although he loved Hikaru more, enough to step aside, despite his own feelings for her.
