GBDA 101

Coming into this class I wasn’t sure what to expect. But throughout the past 4 months I’ve learned a lot of valuable lessons that will help me once I graduate and am actually working within the realm of design. The 3 biggest things I’ve learned from this course is to not take criticism so personally and to always think big. Becoming a part of the Design Challenge for the KW Symphony has been a great experience for me and has given me a glimpse into what it actually would be like to work with a team for a real client. Always thinking big and then making the ideas more realistic is something I had a hard time wrapping my head around, but now that our design team has done so and created our “Big Idea” I fully see why its important to always think big. The final most valuable lesson I learned throughout this course is that you have to fail in order to truly succeed. Everything is a work in progress and you need to fail a few times before you find the best version of your project.

I’m excited to see where this team will go, and I hope (if Mark likes our ideas) that we get to work with this team and actually follow through with this project. I’m thankful for all the skills and lessons I’ve learned, and I’m excited to continue my studies in the world of design.

“Twins can be individuals too”

My partner, Megan, is a twin and up until she left for university she had always been lumped together with her twin sister. For her personal logo, she stressed the need for individuality when being a twin. She is heavily family orientated, and has a strong connection with her mom, dad and 3 siblings. She is very hardworking and determined, and wants to reinvent herself without the assumption that all twins are exactly alike. Therefore I created the logo you see above. I choose to create this logo around 2 mountains, because when I see a mountain I think of an obstacle someone has overcome. I also believe that mountains are a sign of hard work and determination to overcome those obstacles. These 2 mountains also represent Megan and her twin sister, which is why these mountains aren’t side by side anymore; to represent that twins can be individuals too. There is a hidden “M” within the logo, which starts at the beginning of the mountain on the left and dips down between the two and then ends at the end of the left mountain. Since she is heavily family oriented, I included the 5 arrows on the the line segment that the mountains fall on. 2 on the left side to represent her parents, and 3 on the right side to represent her siblings. As you can see in the middle valley between the mountains there are 5 dots representing her family as a whole, but one dot is hollowed out in the center to show Megan’s individuality. 

I choose to have this gradient background because these colours are both Megan’s favourite colours and I like the contrast between the linear design and bold teal -> pale yellow background.

Personal Branding:

I think personal branding is a very interesting concept, and while learning more about it in GBDA 101 I started thinking about my close friends and what they would want to include in their personal branding. I decided to ask a few of them to pick something that really represented them as a person/something that they would've wanted to have included in their own “Personal Branding”. Here’s what they had to say about the things they chose and why they decided to choose them.

Photo #1: "Getting accepted into university has always been a dream of mine, and accepting my offer to the University of Waterloo was a huge defining moment in my life. I think once I moved away from home and started university I really started to grow up; which is why I would want something relating to post secondary studies within my personal branding.”

Photo #2: “Without a doubt my friends have had the biggest impact on my life so far. I wouldn't be where I am today, nor would I have left my hometown if it wasn't for their constant support. This is why I would want to have something related to my friends included in my personal branding. They mean the world to me haha.”

Photo #3: “Ever since I was young, I’ve always had a passion for skateboarding. As soon as long boards started to become a popular thing I got one and began learning how to ride. I would spend countless hours on these boards, if I wasn't with my friends you could almost always find me either skateboarding or long boarding. Even now, I’m usually on my longboard going between classes or from campus to my student house. It’s become a part of me, which is why I would want to have skateboarding or long-boarding within my personal branding”

I’ve always had an eye for photography and wanted to expand my knowledge in the subject. I love how a picture can tell a story or capture an emotion/provoke a particular thought in the viewers mind. I’ve included a few older pictures that I've taken in the past to show my abilities with a DSLR camera. Along with those photos I also included a few from the past week where I’ve tried to use different settings with the camera, including a prolonged exposure and aperture.

Throughout the years I've learned the importance in colour, lighting and exposure while taking a photo. Even though I've had some experience with a DSLR camera and taking photos, I’m no where near where I’d like to be and I’m excited to see my progression throughout GBDA 101.
