Was it ever explained why Dream became a stone statue, or did the fandom just decide it was because of too much negativity that was in Dreamtale after Night eat the apples?

I saw multiple versions on why Dream turned into stone, with the negativity thing being the most used one, but I don't know if there was an official "canon" reason

Not really? In the comic written by the creator, Nightmare harm's Dream but refuses to kill him to preserve the Apple, not really caring about Dream. After he's seen cutting down Nim and "condemning" his brother to a stone statue.
