What is “Earth science”?

Earth science isn’t just about, the environment, the climates, the outerspace, the planets, plants, trees, animals etc. Earth science is about how we look at earth. The only known planet that can sustain life. Earth science is when we realize how beautiful our mother earth is. It may be sad that it wasn’t as it were way back then, but can’t we see? after all the things earth’s been through it still gives us chances. Chances to change are ways. Life is beautiful on earth. It is up to us on how we look at it. I have learned many things about this, but what strucked me the most is my realization. My realization why we need to learn earth science. For me? it is a wake up call! It’s trying to tell me to wake up, stand up and go make a change in this world, and that is what i’m going to do!

“Worst Weather”

Probably the worst weather that I had experience was the “ Bagyong Yolanda” back then I was being taught by my uncle on how to drive. It was the worst timing to practice for it was raining very hard. Me and my uncle didn’t know that there was a typhoon. I was still living around lahug at that time, so as we decided to drive home because the rain was getting stronger, the traffic was the worst! we have been there for almost 1 hour and a half yet there was no progress. The rain was pouring, floods started, people were panicking, and trees were swaying. We got home safely around 11:30 pm, and at that time I don’t want to leave the house anymore. Our garage got flooded, water bottles and garbages were floating all over the place. It really was a nightmare. So we went to turn on the TV bu the lights went out. It seems that a tree got knocked down and hitted the electric post of the subdivision. So we had to spend the night with coldness and darkness. That was the worst weather ever.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS QUESTIONS: A. During construction, how did you test the strength and stability of your structure? -We checked every part of the building from time to time during construction to make sure we were doing it right. After finishing the first story, we placed weights that were similar to a 250 grams sandbag and shook the building in order for us to test the strength and stability of the project. We did the same after finishing the second story. By then, we knew the capability of our building to handle earthquake test. B. During construction, what strategies did you use to strengthen the weaker areas? Why? -We used four straws in every corner of the stand of the building. We believed that through this, we would strengthen our over-all building. We also used plenty of paper clips to hold the straws together firmly. We also added pins on some parts for assurance. C. What are the strongest parts of your building? Why? -The strongest parts of our building are the corners since it was made of four straws each corner. It also served as the stand and support for the first story, so I assume that the first story of our building was strong enough to handle the earthquake test. D. What are the weakest parts of your building? Why? -The weakest parts of our building was the floors of the first and second story because it was only made of paper clips which would supposedly hold the sandbags. Unfortunately, we were unable to properly conceptualize the floors of our building. E. Where did you use string in your structure? Why? -We used the strings to attach the building to the base because this we believed that this would prevent the building from collapsing. Instead, because of the strings, our building would only sway during the earthquake test. F. Where did you use pins in your structure? Why? -We used the pins to hold together a group of straws. This was to make sure that the straws would stay intact with one another. We also used it to securely pin the parts that we weren’t sure of. G. If you had 5 more straws, where would you add them? Why? -If we had 5 more straws, I would suggest and add them as stand and support for the building. I would intersect the straws and place them diagonally inside and outside the floor area of the building. I believe this would strengthen the base of our building. Also, I would use them as flooring because paperclips aren’t that strong enough to handle weights.

ONE THING

From the documentary we had watched, what would be the ONE thing you would change with your lifestyle?

~ From the documentary that we had watched the one thing I would change from my lifestyle is probably eating sharkfins, after I watched the documentary I felt disgusted about myself. I didn’t know that it was that worse kind of animal killing. I will never eat sharksfin ever again. It is such a shame that I am an educated child yet I cannot sacrifice even the most unnecessary conveniences for what I know is right. It is so shameful to face myself every morning knowing that while I was at rest, this world was not. Yes, shame and guilt are my constant companions but I ignore them because I cannot face what I have done, what I am doing, and what I might continue to do for the rest of my life. Realizations have dawned on me countless times but I refused to pay attention to them. From now on this feeling that I have will be the foundation of changing this bad lifestyle of mine.

WATER CONTAMINATION

The details that I have gathered from the geological structure is shown above. The highlighted blue line indicates flow of the water from certain areas.The areas with the marked red X’s are those that caused the contamination of waters in the area. These are the Mining areas, Power plants, Factories, Coal mines, Metal works, Pure plastics, and Fuel depot. Further more if you follow the arrows located below the surface you will see the Aquifer, drilled wells are within this area which water comes from an aquifer. Those green spots indicates the areas that are not affected by the contamination. Lastly the table above shows that the highlighted are the most contaminated or the dirtiest. Well M, Spring 1, and lastly River 2 are proofs as you can see by their contamination per liter on the water. That is the end of my investigation.

KABO CHALLENGE

1. How does it feel to have your water consumption limited to a minimal amount?

~ It felt like I was eating something that I wasn’t used to. It was so new to me that I thought it is silly, but as the days went by I somehow got the hang of it. It didn’t feel weird to me anymore, my regular time and use of water was probably about 20 minutes and limiting it for 5 minutes was fine by me, maybe because thats my shortest time in the bathroom whenever I am in a hurry. Doing this challenge not only made me realize how important water conservation is, it also filled me the desire to make a difference in this world. Cliché and overused, but wholeheartedly meant.

2. Is this something you can do long-term?

~ Is it something I can do for a long-term? Yes, I can. Restlessness overcomes me whenever I read articles or listen to reports about water shortages. There is so much I want to do but I don’t know where or how to start, so even if this is just a small way of preventing water shortages worst then I sure will continue doing this for a long-term.

3. In the future, with the amount of shortages we have when it comes to water, limiting your water consumption may be inevitable. What are your thoughts on this?

~ It is sad that the thought of it that one day it will soon happen. Many of us don’t mind it maybe because for them it will not happen or it isn’t happening, but the truth is it will happen and it is happening wether we like it or not. We may not know it but we are slowly killing ourselves until it reaches to the point of realization and regrets. So I will continue this challenge, it may be a little thing to do but it makes a difference.

JUST HOLD ON I’M COMING SLOPE

The slope of the stadium seems unstable and probably has a tendency to fail “Slopes man gae ma fall, Tao pa kaha” Anyhow this slope shows that it is steep, and judging from the appearance of the rocks and the land it looks weak and maybe unable to endure a natural calamity, for example earthquake, this slope may have encountered earthquakes that occured here in cebu that is why it’s appearance looks weak now and could anytime erode if any natural disater hits. Simply shows that “Nothing Lasts Forever”

My 20 hectares land \^-^/

If I were given a 20 hectares land by my wealthy uncle with the following features:

1.Highly arable( Good for agriculture)

2. It is rich in mineral deposits

3. It is found in a prime area ( Good for Commercial use)

4. It has a fresh, clean running river through it.

The question is: “What will I do with the land?”

~The first thing that i’m going to do is to divide the land by 3 parts, 1st part would be the fresh and clean river that would be used for agriculture, 2nd part is the half of the 20 hectares land which is im going to use for agriculture by planting crops, & lastly the remaining half of the land is for mining the minerals of the land. With these 3 point plan I can gain a lot of money and can use the land that my wealthy uncle gave to me. I excluded commercial use because this is really not that of a use for me.

ROCK’N’ROLL TO THE WORLD

Looking at the qualities and properties of rocks and minerals, I can relate myself to be a very hard rock. This is because it takes a lot stages in order for a hard rock to be formed. Just like me, before I became as strong as a rock, I had to undergo tough stages in life for me be a tough hard rock. Those pains and struggles that I had to face made me into what I am now. Like a rock it wouldn’t be so strong if it weren’t for the other minerals & particles that mixed with it. I wouldn’t be as strong as a rock if it weren’t for my family,friends & God.There is still a lot of stages in life that I have to go through, but I just have to rock’n’roll with it.

My 1st month in Senior High wasn’t that bad, Being in a new school with no one to talk to was tough and pretty much awkward, Until I met them, my new circle of friends. They have different kinds of attitudes and likes but pretty much we have a lot in common. We understand each other, help our friends in need. Although i’ll admit that life in senior high is tough, there will always be ups and downs, but somehow I get through them, sometimes all by myself, sometimes I conquer it with friends. I know that me and my friends still have a lot to go through in this journey, some may fall but we will help each other out, until we all succeed, because in this section NOBODY GETS LEFT BEHIND.

BIOSPHERE: Positive- I don’t hurt animals & I take care of plants by watering them Negative- I pick flowers & play with insects, sometimes I kill insects that bothers me

GEOSPHERE: Positive- I like to plant trees & recycle Negative- I sometimes throw my trashes anywhere

ATMOSPHERE: Positive- I don’t smoke & I usually just walk Negative- Sometimes I use my car to go places emitting smoke that harms our atmosphere

“Who am I in the midst of this universe?”

Who am I? I am no superman, nor a god, I am not that special kind of person, I am not to be worshipped. I am just a mere human being in this universe. I cry, I laugh, I smile. Like any other people I have dreams. I only see my goals, I don’t believe in failure. I’ve seen better days, but i’ve also seen worse. I don’t have everything that I want, but I do have all I need.
