Post genuinely not provoked by anything in particular but G-d afab Beloved is either a deeply boring headcanon at best and an actively transmisogynistic headcanon at worst. Looking at the character the protag repeatedly treats poorly for being a) a genderqueer man he's attracted to or b) a trans woman he's attracted to and being like hmm but what if this person definitely WASN'T amab and all of Fitz's specifically homophobic and transmisogynistic discomfort with their gendered presentation was sort of just a bit of dramatic irony bc he wasn't aware they ACTUALLY had his preferred sex characteristics. What if Amber was just a Regular Girl™ and that's why she passes so well instead of her character containing any of the complexity of being a stealth trans woman. What about that

I also think some of this is rooted, even subconsciously, in the (transmisogynistic) idea that if a transfeminine person passes as male when she chooses she can't simultaneously or alternatively pass as female when she chooses. Like the idea that an afab person would be androgynous enough to read publicly as both legibly male as Lord Golden and legibly female as Amber but an amab person could not be.
