just ran face first into one of the worst things I've ever seen. tw for rape
some of you are actually genuinely vile, dangerous people who should be barred from congregating and only allowed to interact with normal people under supervision. andrew tate group chat ass posts. i hope you all die. and i specifically want the anon and their fuckass rapist friend to have their throats slit by the girl this happened to and she gets away with it.
ok i said i don't go here in the tags of lrb but i do actually look up hdg discourses sometimes just to entertain myself. it's like reading fandom venting threads on ffa with 500+ comments.

Was able to pull one over on them when, after mentioning it was getting late and I needed to leave the event, I checked my wrist by habit.
"lol did you just check your spike thingy like it was a watch"
"oh yeah no it actually has this coating on it that changes throughout the day if you look closely"
"really?"
"no"

im a public school teacher part time and despite the gloom-mongering narrative you’ll see online i find that on the whole the kids have been far more kind attentive and curious than i expected. however one of them is named naruto. and another is kanaya
me getting ready for another long ass day of teaching kanaya and naruto the works of william shakespeare:
Did you ever talk on here about how you like, make/made a routine of drawing comics? I have a memory of you mentioning doing Lynda Barry exercises but I’m not sure about the details and I’m up past my bedtime so might be getting it muddled. WHICH is to say if it’s not too touch trouble I would love to know more about how you get into the groove
Hi Oliver! Between the two of us YOU are the one with a debut graphic novel published so I'm going to go ahead and link to that lol. It's Space Story!
Okay, here's the post with the Lynda Barry exercises. I can't recommend Making Comics enough for idea generation & general comics motivation. Barry is a master at getting you to loosen up and then tighten back up. I've also gotten a lot of mileage out of this Before/After worksheet from Tom Hart. The random image can be anything (movie screencaps, memes you've saved, other people's comic panels, etc).
Lately I've been working on Junk World #2 which is really long. I don't worry about sticking to a daily routine because my day job is physically taxing. But I do at this point have a set "formula" for finishing pages that feels very natural & doesn't stress me out.
First (image 1) I doodle a scene with ZERO regard for panel layout or page composition. This kind of drawing is just little guys talking to each other. Like literally floating heads. Everyone can do this kind of thing, I did it in the margins of my school notebooks. Then (image 2) I go back & start chopping up the story beats into panels, pages, etc. I only do this 1-2 pages at a time. Any more and I get bored!!!
Then I lay out the panels on 11x14 bristol and pencil/letter/ink. This is a "draw the rest of the owl" ass thing to say and it takes the most time, but because I've worked out most of the problems in sketch form it doesn't feel stressful or like I'm just staring at a blank page.
I think this is different from the standard "thumbnail" advice because the first part, the part where I'm just doodling/playing around, is fundamental to the actual flow & feel of the story. I can't skip it. And it's an extension of all my favorite exercises where the focus is generating silly images/characters just for fun and not worrying about the finished Thing.
But I don't know if that answers your question really... TL;DR:
In order to get in the groove, I pretend there's no causal relationship between "doodling a little cartoon animal" and "crafting something purposeful that people will see." And the core of that is getting to a place where I can just make stuff up without worrying about it :D
Ty for the ask, let's all make comics <3

the state does not need to assign you a sex, nor does it need to keep inalterable record of it btw
a very interesting terf objection to this one boils down to "but how would the state know who to protect?" because it speaks to the incredible privilege of being in a class the state actually ever remotely wants to protect. most oppressed groups do not want the state to have a registry of them, lol
the patriarchy has done a great job convincing white cisgender women that it's in their best interests to maintain it
Researchers can do studies that track disparate impacts across genders just fine without the government storing your assigned sex as part of your legal identity. They do this with race and orientation and disability and so on just fine.
A census can understand population level trends just fine without storing your assigned sex as part of your legal identity. They can ask for this information in the census. The census tracking population level data is not the same as your assigned sex being permanently part of your legal identity. (At least, the way my country does a census.)
Your doctor can know your anatomy by you communicating it to them if/when it is relevant. There is never a time when they might need to know something that could only be conveyed by your assigned sex being officially relayed to them via government documentation. You can just use your words. The same way you tell your doctor any other part of your medical history.
People respond to "the government doesn't need to store your assigned sex as part of your legal identity" as if they are hearing "no one should ever acknowledge gender or sex at all" but that's not what's being said.
Your birth certificate conveys important legal information about you. Your name, as a designation. Your parents, as they have a legal obligation to you. Your place of birth, as that place has a legal obligation to you. Date and time of birth, since age is important for application of some laws.
And sex. That's on there too. But what is the legal relevance? What laws is the government going to apply to you differently based on what sex is on your birth certificate? I can only think of one thing my government really uses that for, and that is to determine who has to sign up for the draft. And guess what, fuck that shit anyway. The government also used to use this to decide who is allowed to marry who. They don't do that anymore. For now.
There is literally no reason my assigned sex needs to be part of my legal identity. My government is not using that for anything (important). It doesn't matter. If the gender markers on everyone's IDs vanished tomorrow nothing (except maybe the draft) would be significantly negatively affected. Data collection for research could continue as usual since researchers usually have people self report these characteristics rather than checking their government IDs. My doctors would still know which organs I have and if they forgot, I could tell them. I don't want anything to be part of my legal identity that doesn't have to be.

officially did the weirdest neurodivergent thing in my life so far, which is go out at 1am to deliver a filled out form i've been procrastinating delivering even tho the place I meed to put it is within walking distance and I just need to leavw it in a post box. and on top of that I stalled because I walked past a group of men, not because they scares me (tho they kinda did), but because I was embarrassed about the objectively weird thing I was doing.
the sign of the cross (1932) is a really good film, very moving -- it's about some christians in 64 AD getting persecuted, and it does not flinch about the brutality here, the terror of the colusseum, what it would mean to be made to fight to the death or to be torn apart by lions or crocodiles. Animals were definitely harmed in the making of this film...
The protagonist of the film is a roman prefect with a crush on a christian girl and there's this underlying thing about his romantic love being really quite facile -- even as it prompts him to take great risks -- compared to the love of the christians, which is really depicted as a sort of solidaristic or communitarian love. A bit Feuerbach in a way. There are references to Jesus and general christian teachings, but these are in the service of allowing people to function -- so the boy who broke under torture is reassured that "it's not you're fault -- it's only your body that was weak, not you".
From my vantage point in 2026 it's clear that what is being depicted is a genocide, or an attempted genocide, which i think is accurate to the historical persecution of the early christians. The setup -- the scapegoating of this minority community (for a fire), the systematic dehumanisatian ("scum", "vermin"), the authorised communal sadism of the majority population (laughter as wild animals tear people apart) is all very familiar from too many different places in the current world.
It also throws into sharp relief the degenerated state of contemporary christianity. This film from 1932 could simply depict the power of faith as the maintainance of dignity in the teeth of utter destruction. Can the plastic-faced ghouls who dress up in military uniforms and decry "the sin of empathy" say anything one-tenth as human as that?
Still on my utility pole bullshit
Yeah dawg
Not sure if you’ve seen this one already, but it made me laugh so in the case that you have I’m passing it to you again
