in the cockpit of his jedi starfighter, obi-wan gazes out at the star-filled expanse before him. the events of the previous few weeks had left him feeling exhausted & disheartened— the common tale of a soldier. the clone wars had been raging for years, & the toll it was taking on the jedi was becoming increasingly apparent. obi-wan was no exception. in the quietude of space, he finds solace. a moment to soak in the atmosphere. as he sits there, lost in thought & mild meditation, obi-wan can't help but think about his former padawan. the general skywalker, his best friend. wherever skywalker went, kenobi wasn't far behind— a brotherhood formed between the two men. though, the last few times being in the same vicinity as his friend, he discerns a disturbance in the force. the dark side's pull within reach. he can't shake the feeling that prickles his spine, & it's enough for him to bring his comlink up to his lips.

❛ anakin, are you there? ❜ a pause, silence filling the void in his ship. ❛ i wanted to check in & see how you were doing. you've seemed distracted lately. ❜

@wsteros, anakin skywalker : i won’t lose you the way i lost my mother.

he understands the pain far too well. more than he would like. when he sleeps at night, obi-wan sees their faces: qui-gon, satine. the ever-growing list of those he's lost. when he looks at anakin, his padawan of many years— his best friend, he recognizes the sorrow. it etches itself in his bones, carving a constant reminder throughout the days. but when he looks through the lens as a jedi master, there's a mixture of sadness & concern piercing through his eyes. ❛ anakin, i understand your fear. but you must remember that we are jedi. we must let go of our attachments & trust in the force to guide us. ❜ voice gentle but serious, it doesn't remove any of the achings from his limbs. it didn't cleanse him of any guilt. [the words make him more sad, enough for him to turn away from his companion.]

but in the back of his head, there's a ping. a reminder : dwelling on fear & loss would only hinder them in the midst of a war. there's a war. he's suddenly brought back to reality, a deep breath being inhaled— mind racing as he searched for the right words to reassure his padawan. (padawan, padawan, padawan. anakin was no longer a padawan but he would always be obi-wan's padawan.) ❛ the force is with us, anakin. we must have faith in its guidance, & be ready to face whatever challenges come our way. i will do everything in my power to ensure our safety, but ultimately it is up to you to stay focused & strong in the face of danger. ❜ a promising hand is placed on his best friend's shoulder, a comforting smile curving at the corners of obi-wan's mouth. ❛ you are strong, my friend. ❜

i believe in you. i will always be here for you. you are my brother, the closest thing to a son i have.

they know his approach before they see him. it's a curious sensation, this force. he rises like a star on the horizon, and for some reason lyn swears his constellation is one they've seen before. there is a rightness to his presence, not quite a comfort but a certainty. like finding level footing after losing balance. and he too, can see without sight, can track them among stars, but this they forget. they wave at @jedinct, half in greeting, half to make sure he can see them in the little patch of shade they've found to do business. "is this her siccing you on me again?" they call over, though they seem unbothered by it. partially because they do not mind his company, but mostly because their attention still focused on the parts laid out before the by eager jawa traders. some of the pieces they don't recognize, and not because they've been sandblasted beyond any identifiable shape, but one, a droid part, they keep coming back to. it, like so many things, feels familiar, and they've looked back to it enough times that they're sure the jawas are going to scalp them on the price. "i don't know what it is you jedi do to unwind," they continue, lowering their voice as he draws near, "but i swear - bastila needs to do more of it."

they glance up, nictitating membranes sliding shut as they squint into the desert sun. "y'know, believe it or not‒ " they reach out to idly smack the hand of the jawa leering towards their pockets. he flies back with a curse, but judging by the chittering laughter from his companions, lyn suspects it was more a test than an actual attempt to rob them. "i can handle myself. we're all adults here ‒ except mission, of course." getting the young twi'lek a gift was on their list of tasks for the day. "you don't have to play negotiator all the time."

a year ago, they'd been known as darth revan. a stark contrast to the companion obi-wan finds himself with day-to-day, lyn. behind each smile he presents them with is masqueraded with grief, agony, & failure. a failure to the jedi order, to himself, to the core principles he believes in. what the jedi order is doing isn't right, nor is it easy to contain himself to the lie of a life he's built for himself. [but balancing the force between light & dark, jedi vs. sith, isn't easy either.] he'd been on the ebon hawk with bastila, an order given to check in their companion — the underlying layer behind the sentiment reading, make sure they haven't ran off. after making his way off the ship & the landing platform, he begins to make his trek into the planet of tatooine, eventually finding lyn conducting business with a group of jawas. with a plastered smile & guilt swallowed, he returns the wave meekly, a chuckle trailing behind as he approaches. ❛ what is it that you do? after all, you are a jedi now. you have a say in what's considered unwinding. ❜ voice lowered, digits fumbling with the tips of his beard, his eyes retreating back onto the jawas & sprawled parts in front of them. not entirely out of his expertise. if his padawan was here, he'd be having a field day.

❛ perhaps i wanted to do a little business myself. negotiator or not, like you said, jedi need time to unwind. ❜ he reaches down & grabs one of the remaining motherboards of a power droid, eyebrows furrowing as he observes the object. more out of his expertise than he thought. setting it back down, he waves an approaching jawa off, head shaking in response to the humanoid's excited jitters. ❛ were you looking for anything in particular? ❜

Working with Obi Wan Kenobi is always full of surprises. He's a great negotiator and an even greater tactician. Still, some of his ideas are especially unorthodox... She's not sure how he comes up with these great schemes of his. "I'm not sure I like what you're suggesting," she confesses with a soft sigh, "can you explain your idea further? Convince me this is the best way to destroy the incoming Separatists and I just might support you in this."

years ago, a memory had fluttered through obi-wan's mind — an exchange with his former master. qui-gon had once told him not to center on his anxieties, a sentiment he'd taken into the war with him. he knew his ideas often went against conventional thinking, sometimes thanks to his former padawan rubbing off on him, but he was convinced of one thing : if they could be the key to winning the war, then so be it. looking at the other jedi master, a calm expression etched across features, obi-wan leans forward slightly as his hands rest on the table in front of them. ❛ the separatists are expecting a direct assault on their main fleet. they have prepared for this eventuality & are confident in their ability to repel any attack. ❜ a pause, right eyebrow arching as he allows his words to sink in.

❛ but what if we were to take a different approach? what if we were to send small teams to infiltrate their supply lines & disrupt their efforts from within? it would be slow & deliberate, but leave the separatists vulnerable & unable to coordinate their forces effectively. we have the numbers available. ❜

this is obi-wan kenobi : a failure. a failure to himself, the jedi order, & most importantly : to his padawan. he barely remembers a time before being a brother — it all feels foreign now. a distant & blurred memory, one that could've been a dream or drunkenly made up. he had always been proud of anakin & proud to be his best friend. now they'd become faced with the war in heaven / the creation of darth vader, their looming threat as obi-wan watches the holoscan footage. the two clips are enough to stir him — somehow managing his way to shut down the console, leaning against the surface. his arms don't support him. they buckle & he twists to the floor, a few seconds pass before a set of digits rest on his shoulder. odelia & master yoda remain in his presence, her words faint in his ears — he hears them but barely. blind with pain, he steadily rises from the ground, a deep breath being inhaled. a glance is taken toward the ancient master, the look on his face saying it all : we end this. a glance is taken toward odelia, the look on her face saying it all : run. a divide between the two, obi-wan in the middle.

i won't kill anakin. he's my brother, the best friend i've ever had, i won't kill him. i won't kill him.

head nodding, his gaze not meeting either, he focuses on the ground — anything besides the words loitering on his tongue. ❛ i will do what i must. ❜ with that, he bows his head to master yoda potentially for the final time, before turning toward odelia. an expression reads: walk with me?

“    why would i want to be?   ”     the words alone cause her mouth to pull into a smile that exposes teeth,  her appearance on the outside may be read as lighthearted but those same teeth can bite,  and hard.    

“    what could i possibly stand to gain from being, as you put it, civilised?    ”    although her hands remain hidden behind her,  fingers interlocked comfortably as they rest on the small of her back,   the blade tucked comfortably into the harness on her thigh begs to see the light.   for now it remains hidden beneath silk.

he'd retired from the life of an assassin many years ago, choosing instead to live a peaceful existence in the remote suburbia of new york — far away from the violence & chaos that once ruled his life. but now, as he looked out at the stygian horizon of new york city, the beaming lights & glitzy aura of the empire state, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of perturbation. something was calling to him. a sense of purpose or destiny that he couldn't quite place his finger on, perhaps a courtesy from his friend — john wick, the one who had managed to wind him up in this peculiar situation in the first place.

❛ being civilized is not about gaining anything, ❜ he replies softly, hands raising themselves in the air — an act of surrender. with a trained eye & quick glance, he recognizes a ruska roma ballerina when he sees one. an adversary to john? (more than likely the honest answer, however, she hadn't disposed of him yet. a good sign.) ❛ it's about choosing a different path. a path that values life over death, & seeks to build rather than destroy. ❜ art is pain / life is suffering > there's another path — an olive branch being extended on top of the rooftop.

his time with anakin skywalker had proved useful when it came to the myths of the jedi. their force users did much more than what was required of chiss girls who commanded the third sight ⸻ anakin had the same precognition as that of a chiss sky-walker. he wondered if all force users wielded this powerful weapon of the mind. when they were together, the republic general had mentioned his mentor, obi wan. an upstanding man, one who believed in the power of the republic and the jedi. the man himself sounded like someone thrawn would enjoy the presence of, picking at his mind and opinions like he had with the general during their time on batuu.

the ascendancy were glad to be rid of mitth'raw'nuruodo for the time being. granted a trip to coruscant on a mission to … observe. in truth, it had been that anakin skywalker requested his presence under the pretense of ❛ wanting to spend time together. ❜ the jedi had also mentioned the presence of his master, and thrawn was glad for it. the chiss would be able to view the power of two great jedi minds without having to lift a finger.

when he steps off of the ramp of his ship, thrawn finally takes in the view. so many lights, tall buildings surrounded by small ships and speeders. he hadn't seen anything like it, not even in the unknown regions. this core world was strange ⸻ he would have to get used to it. the medals that hang from his shoulders and string across his chest jingle as the chiss steps closer. it's only obi-wan, with no skywalker to be found : this should be interesting. he is barely close enough when the jedi bows and greets him, and this elicits a smile from the senior captain. ❝ i .. have heard much about you, master kenobi, ❞ thrawn bows, his hands clasped behind his back in his natural stance. ❝ forgive me for my proper dialect. i studied basic on my way here. it is not my first language. ❞ he only half ignores the comment about anakin, instead opting to look around for the young man. this shouldn't be too hard, communicating with his friend's master … he hoped. and why had he come? ❝ two reasons : i was invited by general skywalker, i suppose he required my presence for something unknown, and, as you know, the chiss are an isolationist society ⸻ they have requested, while i am here, to observe the jedi and the people of this planet. ❞

he had been dubbed the negotiator during the clone wars for his ability to communicate; even through the tensest situations, he consistently succeeded. in this case, an awkward circumstance had been presented to him. this was not out of the ordinary for obi-wan, nor was it irregular for anakin to trap him in such a scenario— what was, however, out of the ordinary was the presence of a chriss captain outside of csilla. while anakin had spoken the details of his encounter with thrawn, the jedi master couldn't help but wonder how they managed to form their camaraderie enough for thrawn to travel. (especially on a mission to retrieve the senator of all matters.) ultimately, the details didn't matter. what mattered was the current situation, one that causes obi-wan to stroke at his beard, his head nodding as the male spoke. ❛ i see... well, in that case, welcome to coruscant. your proficiency in basic is impressive, considering it's not your first language. i assure you, your dialect is not an issue. ❜ he returns thrawn's smile, an eyebrow raising at particular words— observing the jedi? that caught obi-wan's attention, though not with hostility, only pure curiosity. what could the ascendancy want to know about the jedi? he was unfamiliar with their customs, one of the few planets he hadn't ever traveled to— before the war or during. curiosity piqued, his head cocks ever slightly to the side.

❛ if you have any questions regarding the jedi or the jedi order, i am more than happy to assist. i am also on the jedi council & can always request an audience with another master as well, on your behalf, if you wish. ❜ a mental note is taken to reach out to master yoda once he returns to the temple. hands unclasping, falling back to his sides, a gesture is made towards the exit of the landing platform.
