Betty Animatic + Revised Script
Because the working script was written before storyboarding was completed, I have decided to write a revised version with timing and camera direction and timing taken into account.
Betty's Story
(VWS) Casinopolis is in dusk. Bright, high stacks of poker chips cast shadows over what looks like a roulette grid. On the right there's a collapsed pile of cards, and a single card set apart from them to the left where it's settled. (7 Seconds)
(Cut to) (CU) We can now see the card in detail. Upon it is the motif of a crying woman. A subtle zoom draws our attention to the card's suit. (6 Seconds)
(Cut in) (ECU) The Suit is a heart. White on an Orange Background. (3 Seconds)
(Cut to) (MS) The suit is here again, except the heart is orange, and on the white sleeve of a girl. She looks somewhat contemplative, looking into the middle distance. (3 Seconds)
Scenery Change: The Roulette Wheel Fountain.
(Cut to) (WS) This girl is Betty, and she is perched on the edge of a lavish looking fountain. (4 Seconds)
(Cut away) (Reverse cut) (Back/ Hip Shot on the new arrival, Jack.) (WS On Betty) Another character arrives on the scene, 'armed' with a baseball bat. Betty, from her perch, turns her head to look at him. (3 seconds)
(Cut back) (Back shot on Betty.) (MS) We can see this figure approach Betty somewhat aggressively. This man is Jack O'Clubs, a 'Decker'. He carries a baseball bat, and wears a cap with a jersey.
She grows more nervous the closer he draws, demonstrated by the sweat forming on the back of her head. (5 Seconds)
(Cut to) (MS) (Two shot) (Right side) Jack stops across from Betty, glaring in silence for a moment- (3 Seconds)
Only to start shouting. Betty Flinches, shoulder raised in fright. Expletives form on cards, released from Jack as speech balloons. (4 Seconds)
(Cut to) (MS) (Two shot) (Back Shot on Betty) He continues to rant, more cards forming as Betty physically turns away when he raises an arm to punctuate his speech. (3 Seconds)
(Cut to) (MS) (Two shot) (Right side) Jack turns away abruptly, and his speech balloons drop and flutter down as cards. Betty braves opening an eye. (4 Seconds)
(Cut in) (ECU) Betty stretches her hands out to catch the cards. (3 Seconds)
(Cut to) (MS) She draws them into herself and spreads them like a fan. Contemplating them for a spell. (7 Seconds)
Scenery Change: Lower Roulette table.
(Cut to) (VWS) (Two shot) Betty approaches another figure and tentatively reaches out to him, his back is to us. (6 seconds)
(Cut to) (MS) (Two shot) The figure snaps up, sobbing and brandishing a knife. This is Spiel Diamond, another Decker, who looks like chefs for a living. Betty recoils, hands raised to placate and defend herself in panic. (4 seconds)
(Cut to) (MS) (Front shot) (two shot) It's clear to see that Betty has grown a lot since the last Decker, and is now taller than Spiel, who continues to sob. Broken hearts spill out of his mouth and form cards. (4 Seconds)
She reaches out to touch him on the arm as he bends double, sobbing harder.
(MS) Again, the Decker turns away rather rudely, sniffing, leaving Betty with a myriad of cards to drop into her arms. (3 Seconds)
(Cut to) (WS) Betty is left alone in silence for a beat, with an armful of cards. (3 seconds)
(Cut to) (MS) She looks to the left, and then right. (5 Seconds)
(Cut to) (CU) And stuffs them in her mouth. Answering the question about her growth. (5 Seconds)
Scenery change: The Fountain
(Cut to) (WS) (Two shot) Betty is perched against the fountain, hands folded, far larger than she was in the previous scene. Another Decker arrives, with greaser hair, aviator sun glasses and a leather jacket. This is Aysa Spades. (2 seconds)
Betty turns to look at Aysa while she leans against the fountain's edge, hands in pockets, looking rather content. (5 seconds)
(Cut to) (CU on Aysa's face, profile) Suddenly Aysa starts to spew rather poisonous imagery. What's she's saying we can only assume. Perhaps is a confession to a murder, or plans to harm someone. Either way, the contents disturb her so much she draws back in gradual horror. (5 Seconds)
(Cut to) (VWS) We see the confessions pile up at an alarming rate around the fountain, and all the while Aysa is completely composed. Betty, on the other hand is completely panic stricken. (Extended to 6 seconds)
(Cut to) (Two shot) (MS) The pair are back lit now. Betty is eying a teetering stack of cards anxiously, while Aysa is taking a deep, happy breath. (2 Seconds)
The breath is let out, and Betty faces the front, looking absolutely perturbed as Aysa exhales. (3 Seconds)
(Cut to) (WS) Aysa walks away with a smile and a wave tossed over her shoulder, towards the camera and out of shot, to the left, leaving Betty stood as she was, too unnerved to move. (4 Seconds)
(Cut to) (W-MS) (Front shot) Betty is stock still, and very tense. She's backlit, and the light shows through her body. She's trembling, fists are clenched at her sides while we zoom in on her very slowly. (4 seconds)
(Cut in) (CU) We see Betty's fear up close, as she turns to one of the card heaps. Sweat is on her face, teeth gritted. (2 seconds)
(Cut in) An arm dives into a pile of cards, and scrunches a handful. (2 Seconds)
(Cut to) (WS) Betty is on her knees and is shoving handfuls of cards into her mouth. (3 seconds)
(Cut to) (VWS) Betty has grown larger than the fountain, and continues to do so, handfuls of cards still being shoved into her mouth. (Extended to 5 seconds)
(Cut to) (Reverse cut) (Back Shot) (High angle Shot) Betty is now enormous, much taller than the chip stacks, and insignias from each of the Deckers' conversations are displayed upon her side: An expletive, a skull, and a broken heart.
The Deckers themselves are stood together, looking up at Betty while she casts them in a colossal shadow. ( Extended to 7 seconds)
(Cut to) (Reverse cut) (Low angle shot, from behind the Deckers) (VWS) The earth rumbles, and a dent forms in Betty's side, making her unstable. She stumbles. (Extended to 5 seconds)
(Reverse cut) (VWS) A pile of cards collapses chaotically towards the ground. The cards from Betty's side fly off in different directions. (4 Seconds)
(cut to) (WS) (Low angle shot) The Deckers are stolidly stood together, obviously to watch the spectacle and inspect the damage more closely and turn in unison to look at the lone card fallen to the left, the one which displays Betty on it, while the last few cards drift into the pile. (4 Seconds)
(Cut to) (CU) We're given the parting shot, a mirror to the start, of Betty crying and reduced to just one, weak little card. (5 Seconds)
