If you want to talk about who is actually obsessed with these men, maybe look at the country that built an entire political and educational mythology around them and literally enshrined them as national founding fathers. Because between some random foreign kid writing RPF on AO3 and the entire institutional apparatus of the United States continuously venerating these men as national heroes, I’m pretty sure we know which one is doing the more elaborate worship ritual here.

An American white guy writing porn about real Vietnamese soldiers who actually existed and died is NOT the same historical/cultural situation as a Vietnamese person writing gay porn about your Founding Fathers. We are not exporting Vietnamese soldiers as a global entertainment franchise. Vietnam does not have a centuries-long history of militarily dominating and bombing the United States. The power dynamics are not interchangeable just because “both involve dead historical people.”
And please don’t fucking pretend American media has never sexualized, exoticized, fetishized, or otherwise turned Vietnamese and Asian people into consumable cultural objects.
