In the past King has defended displaying the flag stating “We have a 1st Amendment… They’re saying we should outlaw that [Confederate Flag] so the American people don’t have a chance to see our heritage.” This defense is just plain wrong though. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ‘heritage’ as traditions, achievements, beliefs, etc., that are part of the history of a group or nation. By word choice he has suggested that people should be able to see the tradition of slavery, the achievement of slavery, and the belief in slavery by our nation. There are those that argue the Confederate Flag doesn’t symbolize slavery or slavery alone. There are also those individuals that believe the Swastika doesn't symbolize genocide. Yet, the truth of the matter is that now the Confederate Flag is as much a sign of slavery as the Swastika is a sign of death camps. United States Congressman Steve King, by displaying that flag, suggests his constituents are proud of the tradition of slavery in this country. That is just arrogant, insensitive, and racist.

Making The Revenant was about man's relationship to the natural world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow. Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people who will be most affected by this, for our children's children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted. Thank so very much.

A Case for “Down-Votes”

• Most people view negative comments and "down-votes," on youtube for example, as unproductive or mean-spirited but they have their place when they appropriately critique an idea. In contrast, Facebook videos have no "down-vote," which allows the video to rise to popularity based entirely on its number of views, likes, and shares. I just watched a video that negatively generalized a group of people, and so regret watching it. • I went in hoping to understand a different point of view and was greeted with opinionated prejudicial claims. Yet, I am now one of the 1 million+ views on it and I'd really like to optimistically believe that many who watched it, WISHED they hadn't. • I'm not looking for solutions to this particular situation but I would just ask that you consider one thing before you like, share, or post. All should consider if what they give approval to actually invites productive discussion with those who are different or if it only ingratiates yourself with those that think exactly like you do.

How do people explain this? These are weapons. They spill blood, shatter bones, and rip flesh. The sole purpose of a gun is to destroy living and non-living things. As of February 2013, protection is the new leading reason for gun ownership with hunting coming in second. Honestly, the majority of Americans just want common-sense gun control, nothing more.

Famed footwear brand, Manolo Blahnik is in hot water after it attempted to import nearly 300 pairs of shoes made from the skin of a rare species of snake over two years ago. According to a lawsuit filed this week in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, the shoes that were seized by U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service inspectors were made out of skin from the dog-faced water snake, a species that has been listed as endangered since 1973, making the Manolos a clear violation of the Indian Wildlife Act. Reports allege that the shoes were seized at John F. Kennedy International Airport in 2013 when customs officials noted that the shipment’s bill of lading did not accurately identify where the goods were produced and what animal skins were used in their production.

It might just be me but it seems like more attention is given to the fact that the shoes were illegally imported rather than to the bigger issue. I mean, sure, the attempt at import ultimately revealed the bigger problem but write it that way. These shoes were made with the skin of an endangered species of snake! And this really highlights another issue: our consumerist materialist culture promotes this kind of immoral behavior. They will quit producing these products when we quit buying! Shame on Manolo Blahnik.
