I took a break.

And it lasted a long time. And now I do not know if I can come back from it. I hope that I do.

In the past few years, I’ve been able to take a look inward to find strength when I needed it and that search has taught me a great deal about what what type of person I am. Most of the time, I observe my life and see nothing but bright bellowing songs of happiness. But sometimes, I look around and see things in a skewed light. Compltr is a descriptor of what I see in those moments of fading light. The record touches on the strange phenomena of growing past your current age, what you choose to do in a moment that is completely yours, and the beauty of sin.

A feeling less contracted

Is worth it. Even in turmoil.

I am very happy to have found out about Youth Lagoon last year at the time that I did. It was about one day before I took a flight to Bangkok. I saved a few of his records on my offline playlist and listened to it quite a lot on the plane ride / trip. 

On Feb. 1st, he announced that Youth Lagoon would come to a complete end after his upcoming tour dates. Obviously, a bummer. However; his final US show will be at Treefort Music Festival in Boise, ID. I coincidentally will be there with my band playing as well. I am pretty happy to be a part of his send off while equally grateful for the completely random and unforeseen pleasures that being a musician has brought me. I can count a few other times this has happened, but it actually happens more often than I can remember:

• Watching The National side stage at Riot Fest

• Seeing Pinback play one floor above where we were playing

• Having Greg Ginn yell at me to move our van in Zurich

• Playing beneath Warpaint in NYC at Webster Hall

Anyways. I’ll miss you, Youth Lagoon. See you in a month.

A Moment Draws on You

I like to think about moments that pull at you in exhaustive ways.

One in particular was a moment in my music life that I found out, today, was near perfect. My friends and I wrote some songs that took us on a tour. Our technical first date of the tour was in Texas. We’re on the stage behind a curtain. We’d been backstage up until that moment, so we hadn’t seen doors open or any people yet - mostly because we didn’t care. We all looked at each other after everyone was respectively “ready”, smiled and high five’d. The curtain drew and revealed about 600 people, eager to hear the first note. But the moment I’m recalling has nothing to do with the people. It has to do with my friends and I who made something together and brought it somewhere far away, pushing through whatever bullshit that came strapped to the decisions we made to get there, only to realize that in that exact moment - we were all really happy. Right then. 

Were we invincible then? or now?
