Is it me or has tipping gotten out of control? I'm really not clear on what the rules are anymore? My understanding was that for some reason restaurants and bars have chosen not to pay their staff and therefore the onus has been placed on patrons to pay their salary- riduclous-- yes but if you dare not to fall in line, you are labelled a terrible person. Ok so I tip and I resent every second of it but I suppose it is my responsibity to make sure that my bartender and server can pay their rent. So now on to my second quesion, who should be getting tipped? Now when I pick up food at a restaurant there is a tip jar, at the pizza place, at fast food restaurants etc. Why am I tipping the maid at a hotel- are they also not being paid a living wage? If they are then why am I not tipping the woman at reception, the stewardess who serves me my food on the plane, how about the UPS guy- he climbs 5 flights to bring me a package, maybe I should tip him too? Do you tip the guy who delivers your food the same amount as you do in a restaurant- why not? Isn't he putting in more effort by biking to your home and hand delivering your meal? Can we just get rid of this stupid custom, it makes no sense and is highly discriminatory (look it up). At the end of the day, I'm tipping based on service then why aren't tips standardized? If you bring me a steak or you bring me a hamburger, shouldn't the tip amount be the same- why is it based on price? Is opening a cheap bottle of chianti more strenous than opening an expensive bottle? Give me a break, tipping is bullshit, we all know it and need to push for it to go away just live every other first world country. Here's a tip- fuck tipping!
