9/100 days of productivity
september 23, 2018
Finished and submitted the electronics project and read a lot today. Also spend the day relaxing and recharging for the upcoming week, which i am actually pretty excited about!
Astronomy vignettes. Learning about our world. 1932.
Goals. GOALS
push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise.
push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable.
get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else.
stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything.
buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.
buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small.
strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. make your bed in full.
organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle.
have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck.
push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dog’s behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog.
message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. push yourself to follow through.
think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything.
become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends.
lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasn’t a thing. open your eyes. take small steps to make it happen for you.
This is all really good advice for dealing with long term depression and anxiety. It’s not gonna magically cure you, but I’ve pushed myself to incorporate a few of these things into my day to day routine and it helps
pondering
listen i might be drunk but im right. art & literature & nature & music make life worth living. people who look like they were ripped out of a caravaggio painting make life worth living. go organize a bacchanal in the woods. take pics of your lover in your hotel room in venice. who cares if there’s a void in your soul. who cares if you can’t get attached to anyone. neither can michelangelo’s david.
3.3.18// 3:25 pm. some biochemistry lecture notes ft. an iced caramel macchiato, my favorite! 🌲☕️
02.26.18 || Found my new favourite study space in Brooklyn (:
types of wlw
yellow: morning people, wears denim everything, listens to a lot of folk/acoustic music, drinks coffee and tea, main personality trait is loving animals, affectionate friend, even more affectionate girlfriend, very friendly but quiet & not too fun to anger, very into astrology
blue: takes nice pictures of everything, very put-together aesthetically, brings books with them everywhere (they might not ever read them), loves sitting in coffee shops for hours, listens to a lot of instrumental/synthpop music, calls their friends “babe,” a little introverted, probably wears overalls & sweaters with button ups under them
pink: extrovert! people-people! listens to lots of glam rock-inspired pop & dark pop, takes candids of their friends all the time, probably has really soft hair, big smiles, loves cooking for their friends, a little moody but the sweetest. lil firecrackers, probably wears mom jeans & keds & everyone has a crush on them
green: early early morning people (with the help of coffee, probably), love to daydream about living in the woods & building things but mostly goes on walks around town, can chop wood with chilling accuracy, sharp around the edges & quick to soften. listens to big band, lively, orchestral-inspired folk-punk, probably wears heavy flannels
red: worn out leather jackets over flannels, loves their alone time, takes pictures of nature mostly, fav animal is probably something like a wolf or bear, night owls, seems too cool for everyone but is quite a softie deep down. probably owns several types of pocketknives and can start a fire w a flint & probably eats a lot of ‘junk’ food
Small Ways To Improve Your Life
make your bed to immediately make your room look more put together
water first, then coffee or tea
pray or meditate, even just for ten minutes, to set the tone for your day
browse the news headlines ( & read the articles that interest you when you’ve got time)
wear something you feel b o m b in
listen to music while doing your daily activities-commuting, cleaning, cooking, exercising
smile at at least two people
smile at YOURSELF
call or message someone you love
eat food that makes you feel radiant
make lists of things you need to accomplish for the day
stretch for 10 minutes
record in your phone the positive thoughts you have so you can remember them
carry water with you (always always always)
shut off your phone for an hour and have some ME time
take a hot shower or bath at the end of a stressful day
try to make plans to spend time with someone at least once a week
think about 3 things you are grateful for at the end of each day
do something calming, relaxing, and non-electronic 30 minutes before you sleep
sleep pants-less
concept: living in an apartment in a foreign city. the smell of the bakery down the street comes in through the open window and sunlight warms your back while you lay in bed with a cup of tea on the nightstand and your pet sleeping at your feet. in the next room is all the books you could ever read, but a few of your favorites are still scattered around your bedroom because you’re in the middle of reading them all again. music plays faintly. you are relaxed, happy, and the only thing you have to worry about is what you want to make for breakfast.
science supported studying!
hi! this is my first post on my new studyblr & i thought i’d give some tips for studying that have been proven to be true (ya can’t argue with science) hope they help!
-main points are in bold + italic
TRY TO AVOID LONG SESSIONS
i know that so many of you are used to cramming and going at it for hours because you’re nervous and you feel more productive that way, but think about it for a second. your brain will be having loads of both new and old information thrown into it at once, even if you think you’re used to it, you won’t be reaching your full potential.
the brain finds it easier at encoding the information in short, repeated sessions as opposed to massive chunks.
which leads onto my next tip,
USE SHORT SESSIONS AND REPEAT THEM
this can be annoying sometimes, but it works.
as mentioned before, short & repeated chunks works best for the brain. if you have a short study session on an easy topic, having another small session will help solidate that info, and if it’s a harder subject then having one or two more short repeats are better for making sure you fully understand everything.
the saying practise makes perfect is because you’re repeating something- it gives your brain a better chance of learning from mistakes and perfecting what you do.
(try podomoro! ya can have longer chunks too)
SUMMARISE, REWORD, WRITE
it’s simple: don’t write extra words you don’t need & complicate a topic. change the wording of the sentence to suit you. changing the words means you think more, which in turn helps you to absorb stuff better. also, this one might be hard for some of you, but handwriting things is always, always better than typing. it forms a connection through the process of writing and researchers have found typers process the information at a shallower level. if you have to type notes in class because it’s quicker/easier for you, be sure to write them up when you get home.
LEARN TO TEACH, NOT TO PASS
this tip helped me a lot when it came to summarising and simplifying processes without losing information.
a group of students were given information to learn, one half were told they would be tested and the other half was told they’d have to teach it to others. the group who expected to teach were better at learning the information.
make your notes easy as if you were going to be a teacher- and then make yourself the student!
DESIGNATED STUDY STUFF
having a space that your brain thinks: study!! is best, this can be hard so if you’re like me and don’t have much space, try to get a desk/table (no beds!! at all!!!) where you can focus. also, find your certain study clothing style. this sounds weird, but for me i can’t study in baggy jumpers or clothes that are really comfy because my concentration weakens and it makes me want to stop & relax. i wear tight (usually long sleeved) tops and either tight jeans or a skirt and tights. for me, i aim to look like a professional, so i act professional. i still chose comfy clothing (nothing too fancy or a suit set or anything lmao) but i trick my brain into thinking: you can’t mess around. real shit.
again, this leads me into my next point,
CONDITION YOUR BRAIN
this was inspired by my criminology class, condition yourself to associate certain things with studying. it can be a playlist (certain types of music are best) area, clothes, stationary or notebooks.
for me, i put a piece of paper with a quote up on my wall, and this quote is only up when studying. not only is the quote hella inspiring and makes me wanna work, when i see it my brain also thinks: study!! work!! progress!!
that’s it for now!
my asks are always open- let me know if you like this/found it useful:)
i have more post ideas (some of which link to the tips mentioned here) and i’m excited to be back in the studyblr community!!:)
Avoid some of the Main Brain Damaging Habits
1. No Breakfast – People who don’t eat breakfast have lower blood sugar levels. This can lead to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain (and to underperformance in terms of thinking, processing, retrieval and memory skills).
2. Overreacting – This can flood the brain with chemical which interferes with clear thinking, logical analysis and memory.
3. Smoking – This can cause a shrinkage in the brain, and possibly lead to Alzheimer’s disease.
4. High Sugar Consumption – Consuming too much sugar interferes with the absorption of proteins and nutrients. These are essential for healthy brain development.
5. Air Pollution – The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain. Again, this can reduce and interfere with the brain’s healthy functioning.
6. Sleep Deprivation – Sleep allows our brain to rest and rejuvenate itself. Long term sleep deprivation accelerates the death of brain cells. It interferes with putting down new memory traces, effective problem solving and memory retention.
7. Exercising your Brain in Times of Illness – Working or studying during times of sickness can lead to a ineffective thinking, poor processing, and to poor memory and retention.
8. Lack of Stimulation – Thinking is the best way to train our brain. Lack of stimulation can prevent new neural pathways from forming. It can also prevent us from reaching our potential in terms of creative thinking and analytical thinking.
