The End

This is our last post on this blog. The election’s over. Baird’s won. Labor’s gotten a few seats back.

This election campaign has been eventful, with parties fighting for popularity and parties. For the Baird Government, it looks like popularity has been chosen over policy, although Mike Baird has chosen to call it “hope over fear.” He’s already gotten his mandate to lease 49% of the electricity network.

As for Foley, he’s staying behind as a “real” opposition leader and probably going to try and improve his public image.

Thanks for keeping up with us, and remember, the Coalition’s new term has just begun.

The Abbott Factor

Tony Abbott was the great unknown factor in this election, but was it important enough to sway the result? First hand evidence from Toongabbie Public School shows that it did, at least slightly. (A couple was overheard saying “Abbott is Liberal, so let’s vote Labor.”)

Of course, in the end the Coalition still got re-elected, but at a loss of 16 seats. This would definitely cause problems later down the track when the Coalition tries to get some of their policies running.

But we can’t be certain if it was Tony Abbott or the poles and wires scheme that caused the swing against the coalition.

Luke Foley’s Speech

Luke Foley starts off congratulating Mike Baird for his victory for the 2015 NSW election. He continues by praising Mike Baird saying he was a “formidable and honourable opponent” who has the authority to lead the Liberal and National Party.

He said that Labor has gained “half a million votes more today than at the last election of 20 seats. This election, the number of seats will be in the mid thirties.” This has bring Labor back int relevance and even though he respects and agrees with the majority of voters that it is too soon for Labor to return to power, he thinks that "the next election is now winnable for Labor.”

Luke Foley also states that “A majority of Labor’s seats will be held by new members. There will be 9 or 10 new women in the lower house.” This earned him a cheer from the audience.

I couldn’t help but notice the sorrow in Luke Foley’s face. It radiated off him so clearly, and even though it is to be expected as he lost the election, it was sad to watch. However, a shout of “love you Luke” from the audience definitely put a temporary smile on his face.

Overall, Mr Foley gave a very gracious speech, thanking everyone for bringing Labor back to relevance and giving them a new life. He is a very commendable person.

Mike Baird’s Acceptance Speech

"Friends,I love this state." That's the way Mike Baird begins his acceptance speech. He walks into the Sofitel Wentworth in Sydney to tumultuous applause and cheers of “four more years!”

Whilst Foley’s concession speech was modest, Baird’s acceptance speech was grateful. He thanked Tony Abbott, his ministers, his wife and his kids. He said Foley was “a tough opponent,” but also accused Labor of running the “biggest scare campaign in the history of the state."

Premier Baird concludes with a promise to “work every day for you”. Why? Because he “loves the state.”

Liberal Wins

Well, this is what our whole blog has come down to. Congratulations to Mike Baird and the Coalition. It looks like they’re governing our state for another four years.

Seven Hills

Mark Taylor is winning for the Legislative Assembly voting for Seven Hills. He was the one I got the opportunity to take a photo with.

There is a 0.2 swing for my suburb.

Out of the electorates being broadcast now, about 10-20% of the votes have been counted. Most are liberal seats. The seats which should really be focused on are the marginal ones, as they will determine who will run the government in the next four years.
