But Stacey has always been so… I don’t know, weird, I bet she’s struggling as much as I am with this dating news”

“I know... Sean is growing up so fast. It almost feels like he was born yesterday.” And now he would start off the day by learning a different word because that was what the therapist had advised them to. To keep on challenging Sean at home or else he’ll have some trouble getting interested and adapting to regular school. But Seok had other worries in mind that had nothing to do with his children growing up fast and dating and more with his own mental health and his depression. The shadow of his parents death still scared him, that one day he might be gone in a blink of an eye, but that, obviously wasn’t something he was going to disclosure in a bar. “Have you talked to her about it? Maybe she can help you with your own struggles.”

He looked around when he heard his name being called, smiling widely when he saw Sean and Seok. His arms went immediately around the little kid, happy to see him. “I’ve missed him too, and you” He assured the other, messing with Sean’s hair. “I would love to join for ice cream” He assured them, chuckling at the kid’s words. “How is she not fun? She’s a baby, Sean, she’s supposed to sleep and poop” He commented, not really knowing much about kids but he was pretty sure babies did that. “I’d love to give you some adult talk even when I’m not expert at those either” He started walking with them, looking at the baby in Seok’s arms. “She’s even bigger than last time, how are you doing? Getting any sleep?”

“I told you he had missed me!” Sean turned to his father, smiling all proudly and smugly and stealing a soft laugh from Seok’s lips, who reached down to ruffle his son’s hair. “I never said he didn’t.” The older Sean got, the more energetic he seemed to get and more authoritative too, so that was something Seok and Jinah were having to handle. Sean then went on to complain about how Sara was boring, with made his dad chuckle again. “She’s boring! She never plays with me!” Sean started walking on the tip of his toes, which was something he’d been doing a lot lately when talking to people taller than him and it earned him a warning to walk correctly from his dad. “I don’t know... anything is good. Literally anything. How’s the job? Your boyfriend? You know... adult things.” He sighed. He was both glad and dreading the end of the summer, but at least it would mean Sean going back to pre-school and giving both Jinah and him a break. “Boyfriend? Do you kiss your boyfriend?” Sean asked, smacking his lips and making some kiss sounds as he reached up to ask for Minho’s hand. “She is.” Seok nodded, brushing his fingers onto his daughter’s dark chunk of hair. “Sleeping is---hard, but I think that Jinah and I are managing. She’s on a leave from work and school’s out for summer, so we sleep whenever we can.”

This wasn’t a good day at all. Or maybe a good week. Or month. Minho didn’t know anymore, he was just living every day and he wasn’t sure why anymore. Sure, last semester, close to graduation, but after that… what? He couldn’t go through the same crisis he went through when he lost his last job, but he knew changes would come and he would have to make a decision, he just wasn’t sure what it would be. But it was normal to be young and stupid and confused, right?

“Minho-ssi!” Sean yelled as he ran towards Minho and collapsed onto the tall man’s legs. “When he said he wanted to see you, I didn’t realize how much he had missed you.” Seok chuckled as he held onto the baby sleeping against his chest on her baby carrier. “Jinah’s out with her friends so Sean thought you might want to join us for ice cream?” Sean smiled, looking up at Minho as he nodded. “Pleeeeeeease! Let’s have ice cream! Sara is not fun. She just eats and sleeps. And poops. She poops a LOT!” Seok gently pulled his son away from Minho’s legs, just to make the little boy detach himself from the other man. “Let go.” He then turned to Minho. “As you can see, he’s been loving the big brother life. But anyway, do you want to come? You look like you’re in need of some sugar. Also, I just really need an adult to talk to because my life has been reduced to children’s activities all summer.”

“So she introduces me to her boyfriend, this kid I had in my lit class last year” He started telling the other, the beer in his hand feeling like a salvation after the afternoon he had. “And I’m like, cool, I know him, know his parents, good student, likes to play soccer, and, yeah, also know about his past three ex-girlfriends that he cheated on” Perks of working in a high school where students tell you pretty much everything. “But I’m like, on dad mode, not Mr. Bennett mode so I just smile and warn him that he has to bring her back before midnight because you know, Alma would stop talking to me if I say anything else in front of her new boyfriend”

“Are you trying to scare me by telling me exactly how things are going to be for me when Sara turns 15 or Sean brings someone home?” Seok chuckled after he’d let his friend vent. A beer in his hand as well because, despite the fact that he wasn’t much of a drinker, he could accompany a friend in a drink. He’d just be much slower, which, in hindsight, could be a good thing. “So you’ve got until midnight to worry, then... I see..”

With Sean being stuffy and with a mild running fever, Seok was exhausted… They had barely slept for the last couple of days, but since Jinah was finally starting to move on from her morning sickness, of course he didn’t have the heart to tell her he couldn’t handle sick Sean alone and deprive her from having fun with her friends. Then, Hyun texted him and he felt even more confused, but again, he didn’t have the heart to say no. Seok had just managed to calm Sean down from a crying fit for not being able to breathe properly when there was a knock on his door, so he unlocked it while trying to balance Sean in his arms and shot his older brother and apologetic look. “Would you be okay with cooking alone? The little guy’s sick, so I’ll have to keep an eye on him, I don’t know how much help I’ll be able to give.” Seok pressed a kiss to Sean’s head, then turned around so that his son could see his godfather. “Look who’s here, Sean-ah. It’s 삼촌. Do you want to say hi?”

As soon as Sean picked his head up enough from Seok’s chest to look over at him, Ethan could tell he wasn’t feeling well. “Yeah, of course…” If he had known Sean was sick, he would have offered to pick something up for him while he was out. Placing the back of his hand against his nephew’s forehead, he frowned. “Hey, big guy. Not feeling well, huh?” He ran his hand over Sean’s back momentarily before stepping in and closing the door behind him. Ethan had never been the most affectionate person but it was somehow a bit easier with his nephew. He slipped his shoes off and took the food to the kitchen while calling out over his shoulder. “Do you guys need me to pick anything up for him? Is Jinah here?” If she was, he figured he would have already run into her. But maybe that was just him trying to find a place to start for conversation.

“No, hyung we’re okay.” Seok replied with honesty. Regardless of how distant their relationship had gotten, if he truly needed the help, he would’ve asked, which meant that they could handle this. “Jinah’s out with her friends. She’s finally getting over her morning sickness and now Sean fell ill, so I told her to go and have a nice night out with her friends.” Seok realized then that not many people knew about his fiancée’s pregnancy, Hyun being one of them, so he smiled, gently bouncing with Sean as he walked around their kitchen. “She’s pregnant.” He announced, planting a kiss on Sean’s head. “She told us on Christmas morning... I think this one is still getting used to the idea of being a big brother. How are things on your end?”

Sick days were getting harder on both Jinah and him. With Sean growing up so fast, it was more difficult to walk around with him in their arms, especially now that Jinah was pregnant and Seok didn’t want her overworking herself. Sean whined, trying to move his uncle’s hand away from his forehead and then turned his head away from Ethan, practically clinging to his father’s neck. “Sian-ah... calm down.” Seok sighed, sending an apologetic glance at his brother. “No, we’re okay. We went to the doctor this morning and we have enough medication for a few days. He’s been having trouble breathing, so it keeps him from sleeping, and if he doesn’t sleep, he gets cranky. He’s only human, after all.” He chuckled, again, kissing his son’s head. “Jinah’s out with her friends. There’s a birthday going on, hence why I’m all alone on baby duty. Do you need anything specific in the kitchen?”

She knew what he was saying was true. Therapy would never help her — one on one sessions, group or any other kind — if she didn’t give it an honest chance. There was no way to heal by sitting and listening, giving the smallest crumbs of details about her life when coaxed. Ethan didn’t open up. She gave the illusion that she was opening up. She said what she thought would satisfy others by stating obvious feelings and offered comforting smiles when her turn was up. Every session was the same. A cycle. It was like going to work, something she had to do to get by rather than something she wanted to do for herself. When he looked back to the road, her eyes moved to the window, focusing on the passing scenery. He made it sound so easy, and maybe it was. She had the freedom to try anything until she found something that made waking up each morning a little more bearable. She had the freedom, but she didn’t have the heart.

It wasn’t that she enjoyed suffering. She wasn’t sadistic, she didn’t find meaning in the pain or cling to the negativity. She didn’t want to continue hurting and living in misery. She supposed she felt like she had to. It was only fair. Her voice came out small and quiet when she finally spoke again. “I don’t want to stop missing her.” It was the most honest thing she’d said in awhile. Logically, she knew there was a difference between missing someone and dwelling on their loss. She refused to listen to logic. “If I move on, it’s like…” Trailing off, she shook her head. She continued to stare out the window, lips parting again, but it took awhile for any words to come out. “What kind of person can be happy without their child? What kind of mother would that make me?” She wasn’t sure if she was truly looking for an answer or not. “I had one job, Seok. One job. All I had to do was protect her, all I had to do was keep her safe, and I couldn’t even do that. I’m glad things are getting better for you, but…” She shook her head again, a slight bit frantic this time, her throat closing around her next words. “But I don’t want that. I don’t deserve that.”

“Why do you think you’ll stop missing her?” He asked. It wasn’t like Seok to meddle in anyone’s life, but he was honestly trying to understand where Ethan was coming from. He was obviously not a psychologist, but he didn’t see any harm in talking about some of the things he actually dealt with. Then, as Ethan continued her explanation, Seok simply remained quiet as he listened, choosing to remain in the car once they’d gotten to the parking lot of the store they had intended to go to in the first place. Granted, he had to choose carefully his words... Ethan was already under stress and he didn’t want to make it worse---he also didn’t know if she’d want to be held of if he should just do it without offering, so he kept his hands to himself, simply unbuckling his seatbelt, which made it easier for him to shift on his seat and turn to face her.

“I can’t sit here and tell you I’d do better than you if something happened to Sean... but I do know that some things are out of our control.” His gaze moved to the car pulling out of its parking space over Ethan’s shoulder, and then, it was back on her dark hues. “Ethan, she was sick... It was out of your hands. Not being able to save her from that doesn’t make you a bad mother. You tried your best---everyone did. Blaming yourself like that is unfair to you.” Maybe Seok should’ve asked for Jinah’s help on this... she always seemed to have better arguments when trying to comfort people. Besides---she was a mother. Maybe she could relate to what Ethan was feeling better than Seok could. He didn’t generate a baby inside him. He couldn’t possibly know how it was for a mother to lose their child. “Moving on doesn’t mean you’ll stop missing her. It just means you’ll learn how to deal with her loss. I know it’s not the same but um... I miss my parents. Some days more than others. I wish they could be here, watching Sean grow up. Maybe if they were still alive, I wouldn’t be depressed and things between Hyun and I would still be good. But---but they’re not. And I know they would have wanted for me to get treatment for my depression. I think Dalia would like that too... or at least for you to be happy again.”

“I did, almost husband. Did you?” Jinah hooked a leg with one of his, practically laying on top of him and running her fingers through his hair to push it back, kissing the tip of his nose. “It’s only one day of the year. And if he has Santa fever, he’s not the only one.” She dipped down to kiss him and Sean seemed to pop back in to try to rush them. Which ultimately ended up with him whining that he didn’t want to brush his teeth and the look he shot in Jinah’s direction. It was no wonder why she always caved but no matter how much she wanted to tell Sean to just go ahead, she knew she needed to take Seok’s side so Sean didn’t think he could keep getting away with everything. “Listen to your dad. The quicker you brush your teeth, the quicker you can go back to the presents.” She stooped down to adjust his shirt and kiss the top of his head. And that got the morning rolling from there. Jinah washed her face and brushed her teeth once they were done and she did her best to hurry before meeting both of them in the living room. It wasn’t until Sean opened everything, content as can be with the new toys he had, that Jinah got up from her seat on the floor. “There’s one more present. But you might need your dad’s help with it, okay?” From the moment she found out, she was thinking of ways she could tell them. And when she came across a cute ornament with two dinosaurs on it that read “Big Brother” she couldn’t resist. So, Jinah handed the small box over to Sean for him to open it, waiting for both of them to find the ornament and put two and two together.

Feeling Jinah’s weight on top of him, her fingers through his hair and her lips on him almost made Seok forget that Sean was awake and running around their house, dying to open his Christmas presents, but it didn’t take long for the toddler to make his presence known again, thus ruining Seok’s plans of spending extra minutes in bed with his fiancée. After he got Sean to brush his teeth alongside him, Seok made his way to the living area, to help the little one unwrap his presents, showing him the things people had sent them (especially Sean). When Jinah handed Sean the small box, saying he’d need Seok’s help with it, it prompted Seok closer and the older man picked him up to place Sean on his lap. “Dinosaur!” Sean beamed, raising the ornament to show his dad. “It’s a stegosaurus!” Seok couldn’t help but laugh a little, because even he had trouble remembering all of these names. “Yeah? Two stegos---” He stopped mid-word, holding the ornament, as soon as he saw what was written on it. “You’re---” He turned his face, his gaze finding Jinah’s and then landing on her stomach. “Are you sure?” There was a smile beginning to spread across his lips. “Are you really? You’re pregnant? We’re going to be parents again?”

“아, 내 친구!” Joon’s face immediately lit up when he recognized Sean, and of course Seok as well. He waved Sean over and picked Gizmo up from his lap to set him down in front of him so that the boy could pet him easier. “You can pet him. He’s just a little noisy, that’s all,” Joon reassured Sean before looking up at Seok from where he was sitting in the grass. “Hey, happy new year. It’s been a while. How have you guys been?”

Sean giggled, running towards Joon and sitting beside his friend so he could pet his dog. Since Seok was already acquainted with the young man, he didn’t see a problem in stopping his son or telling him to be careful. If there was someone who knew how to be careful with animals, that someone was Sean. At first he hesitated, pulling his hand back to himself with a giggle, looking from Joon to his dad, then tried petting Gizmo again. “We’ve been alright. Still in a never-ending dinosaur phase, but at least we’re learning new names every week or so.” Seok then sat down on the grass, close enough to Sean to run his fingers through his son’s hair. “He’s adapted well to pre-school and hes excited to go back. We still don’t know how he feels about being a big brother, though.” He sighed, watching Sean move his hand away and continue to focus on the puppy. “What about you? How have you been?”

His knuckles hovered the door a moment. It wasn’t like he could back down. Ethan had texted his brother to see if he was home, and that he was going to stop by for a little while if he was up for it.
