The most hilarious, iconic act of sadism in the tree trunk though, comes at the bottom. There, after fighting your way through all of that, oh so excruciatingly close to the exit, there's these dopey, slow mushroom people, and you might say to yourself, "oh thank god an easy enemy", and you'd be dead fucking wrong. The mushroom men can pummel you to death in seconds, even at high health and heavy armor. They are both insult, and injury, on top of being one of the most inoffensively storybook monster designs in the whole game. They're a joke. A mean one, possibly, absolutely at your expense, but it is, a funny-ass joke.
